the feeling of not being at the top of the food chain can be so strange. I just spent 2 weeks in yellowstone with yellowstone employees who put the fear of bears in me and I never went without bear spray.... they often spoke with concern (ok, made some fun of) all the tourists who hiked in bear rich environments without spray. they called cyclists "meals on wheels".

@@1ACL My son moved to NM and I am terrified he will encounter a mountain lion while out hiking or biking in the mountains... Bears too but somehow mountain lions seem even scarier. What the heck did you do?!
@1ACL2 жыл бұрын
@@amstergal The Lion looked at me, and I looked at "her" ,and then she moved on. I didnt move. I think she thought, "You are not prey or predator - you mean nothing to me". Seriously, there are alot more easy things for a lion to eat, like bunnies and such, Honestly, The animals are more afraid of us than we are of them. Especially Mountain Lions -- they are very rarely seen because they run away first. And bears are only a problem if the get habituated to eating humans garbage and food...OR if one comes across a mother with cubs, that could be dangerous. But usually most bears will run away. Please try not to worry. Your son can learn how to live with the wild animals by contacting the Wildlife Manegement people, Fish And Game, or whatever they call it in NM. DOnt worry!

Cecilia~ I love how the people of Svalbard respect nature in all her forms. Not to disturb polar bears, reindeer, fox, birds, flowers and grasses, the perma-frost, etc. While I think it is self-selection, in these crazy times I find myself calmed and made hopeful by this belief. It is your sharing with Christoffer that affords me this peace… and I thank you for that.🌅

We have spent the last 3 New Years holidays in Longyearbyen. Fantastic fireworks display at midnight, together with some northern lights two years ago. But our first year was even more special. After returning from watching the fireworks on the hill outside of the church, we were advised of a polar bear very near the village, perhaps the same one who had roamed the main street some days earlier. The bear was not frightened by the commotion, perhaps was more intrigued. Unfortunately the bear didn’t survive the tranquilizer used to aid in relocation, and this tragedy was the source of a long debate. It is very good to see how interested the residents are in preserving the wildlife on these amazing islands.

This is a rotten time for many and we all could use some very positive videos spread around. Yours are one of them for sure. Thank you so much for doing that. Greetings from Emjay, out of Scotland. Ohw and I would love to hear you to tell more about famous people who visited your beautiful Svalbard, the stories and the history, and the ghostly vibes like when you were in the abandoned villages but also the things that made you change, and which inspired you the most. Maybe also about the inside of the university there and the good causes and collaborations. xoxoxo

As a kid i got to see a stuffed animal exhibit which included a polar bear! It was in a standing on rears position(about 10 ft tall!) The attendant noticed me gazing and stated there were even bigger than that out there! To have living animals like that around would give me sleepless nights! All the best and be safe!

We have a 300 -400lb black bear hanging around our apartment building in town every evening in past week... my neighbour has a picture ... he is so beautiful but is scarey at same time... here for us the next closest town is one hour at least away from us so being surrounded by bush we see lots of animals coming in on the rail lines... Our bear is small compared to your polar bear but it is captivating all the same. Thanks for your video love hearing about nature🙂 🙂

My parents own a camp in the Adirondack mountain in New York. We have black bears up there. They let me and my brothers use it when they are not going to be there. I was up there a couple of weeks ago my husband and I were getting our kids ready to walk into town. I stepped off the porch and go around the corner and there was a huge back bear. I almost shit my pants. I went back inside and we waited for it to leave. That was the first time my kids saw a black bear. We grabbed our bear spray and headed into town.
@XSemperIdem52 жыл бұрын
I'm in Southern California and our black bears are quite close. They actually come down to use backyard swimming pools to cool down in the summer. We just stay out of their way, let them do their thing, and they go back up the hills. Another reason to always keep your doors locked if you'll be away from them because bears are way too curious.

C&C, Although it might seem counter intuitive, higher power binoculars really do not help see farther, just the opposite especially on the water! I suspect that the folks at the store you went to properly advised you but had you asked, most people who have lots of experience glassing (actually using binos) would tell you that higher power, anything above 8x, really require a steady rest to see the benefit. And, if you are scanning for extended periods with most any power quality optics dramatically reduce eye strain and headaches!! On smallish boats 7x is quite common, and 8x is probably the most versatile. To prove this to yourselves pick out something small and distant and look at it hand held then repeat from a VERY steady rest. Most people are shocked when they see how much more you detail can be seen with a good rest vs higher power. We never travel without taking binoculars. Even a small pair with good glass will reveal things you could have otherwise missed completely... The brand i saw in your clip is a very good one! While they might seem expensive amortized over 20 or 30 years makes spending the $$ easier. Take care of them and they will last you a lifetime!! S

We had an incredible polar bear experience in Svalbard about 5 days ago. We exploring the area in a zodiac & the bear was walking the shoreline. We watched for a long time & when he reached a glacier, the bear took to the water. After a bit we saw a seal swim up to an ice floe, unaware the bear was close. The polar bear jumped up on the ice floe to attack the seal, but the seal was faster & got away. Between the polar bears, Arctic foxes, seals, walruses, whales, & Svalbard reindeer, this is truly a magical place.
