Kannada cinema introduced parallel cinema in South Indian Film Industry. There were movies like Vamsha Vruksha, Samskara, Ondhanondhu Kaaladhalli, Thabarana Kathe, Hamsa Geethe, Sakshatkara, Gejje pooje etc. in 60s and 70s there were stalwarts like Girish Karnad, B V Karanth, M S Sathyu etc. who nurtured parallel cinemas. Also these movies were commercial success when they were released. Kannada audience like any movie with good content and they don't go by any formula. Mani Ratnam did his first movie Pallavi Anupallavi in Kannada to see the audience reaction to his unique movie making skills. That was also commercial success. Down the line movie makers influenced by neighboring states started producing formula based movies. Which was tragic. However, there were some movies which would not have been successful anywhere were success here like Beladingala Baale, Om, A, Dweepa, Accident, Minchina Ota, Nagamandala etc. Recently new movie makers have started to make good content movies keeping pan India in mind. Hoping that Kannada movie industry will become epicenter of good movies just like it is for IT sector

@@TriedRefusedProductions the main problem with kannada industry according to my perspective was the early 2000's to late 2012's where there were a huge amount of remakes with low importance for new writers. Of course it doesn't mean that we didn't have any good films in that decade. But whatever the hits we got were sporadical. Some new directors like yogaraj bhat, duniya Suri, guruprasad and few directors tried their best to bring some change. In the past 70's to late 90's kannada industry was in its peak period. We had great great directors like puttanna kanagal, Shankar nag, kashinath, upendra, girish Karnad, dorai bhagawan, etc who were encouraging writers. That was the period whn we used to get a hell lot of great bridge or parallel cinemas with great stars like Dr Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, etc. I think it was early 2013 where it began with pawan Kumar's Lucia, Ulidavaru kandante, rangitaranga by directors like Rakshit shetty, Raj b shetty, Rishab shetty, Anup bhandari, Hemanth rao etc who are encouraging new writers(especially Rakshit Shetty's 7 odds) and bringing up the new wave kannada cinema. Even directors like duniya Suri, guruprasad are seen as auteurs than just regular filmmakers. And even as a market, directors like Prashant neel with the help of hombale films is just expanding the market for kannada cinemas. Hope this decade will be a great one for us. I think Kannada industry's main problem was that they were playing safe and didn't really take the risk to experiment since even the mediocre commercial movies of stars did well at the box office. Since the masala movie and remake formula worked with minimum risk, makers went on to mass produce such content. Fans of big stars went ahead and watched it irrespective of the content. This new age of creators are finally willing to take the risk which is actually worth it.

Yes, totally agreed on the remake trend which happened in Kannada film industry in the middle of 2000-2012 was crazy, due to which most of the original script writers had to leave the industry and vent out elsewhere. But now that we have directors like Upendra, Yograj Bhat, Pavan kumar, Rakshit & Raj Shetty, Hemanth Rao, Prashanth Neel, Panagabharana. We will reach out to many more places to fulfill Late Putanna dream come true. Apart from these we have directors like Nagabharan, Girish Kasaravalli, (Late) Girish Karnad few more who are called national award directors from Kannada industry. Below is a small timeline on the time line of Kannada film industry. 1. Initial Trend Setter 1965-1988: (Late) Puttana Kanagal was the first director (Kannada) to direct movies based on novels. Every director from other south states to Raj Kapoor & used to wait for new trend. 2. Late Shankar Nag : creator of Malgudi days and many more from 1980 and for a short time. 3.Family Comedy 1985-1995: (Late) Kashinath was one of the kind of director who started directing movies with an aspect of se*ual comedy with sensible story (Anubhav) 4. Rowdyism Movies 1995: Real Start Upendra comes up with a movie called OM which would one of the biggest movie ever made in world (film was rereleased more than 500 times and has been house full every single time) 5. Yograj Bhat comes up with a great movie Mungaru Male and he changes the entire fraternity again to stop remaking movies.

Very well said lot of people just keep complaining about remakes, they don't realise a deeper problem i,e the native people not supporting and watching native content

Not exactly true. Bengaluru isn't Mumbai yet. Bad scripts and remakes moved the audience away from Kannada movies. Major chunk of the collection is from Bengaluru.
@keerthanbhat902 жыл бұрын
@Yashas B.S Bad scripts are there in every industry, not just kannada. Look at the number of films done in India every year. About remakes - not just kannada, every industry does remakes. Few examples are Vikramarkudu, Drishyam, Bodygaurd, Pokiri, Arjun Reddy, Andha Dhun,A Wednesday,Delhi Belly and the list continues if we get to older movies Now a days Bollywood does a lot of remakes, this trend increased a lot after Ghajini, Wanted. Audiences do watch remakes, it has to just suit to thier nativity. If audiences wouldnt want to watch remakes then everywhere this mindset would prevail, not just kannada. Although now a days people are more aware about remakes, bad scripts and choose good cinemas - thanks to internet Yes Bengaluru isn't Mumbai yet, but it's a similar situation. There are few kannadigas who don't watch or give 1st priority to Kannada movies by criticizing only Kannada Industry and not Indian industry as a whole. There are few people who watch only Big movies - be it any language. Bad scripts, remakes, massy masala movies, big star movies are not just the only problems. Problems are multi-fold, some are common for each language and some are different for each language.

As someone from Mangalore, who lived and watched several subtle nuances of the dark underbelly of the city, Raj and Rishab express their admiration for Mangalore through their homage to its culture. To understand this movie at its finest, you'd need a Mangalorean to explain its art. From under arm cricket, bus timings to the tiger dance business, this movie is through and through a Mangalore epic. The temples mentioned in the movie places a massive role which I felt went under appreciated due to simple fact that it is not widely known. The movie is best known for its music score which again is a homage to Mangalorean mixture of ethnic local styles and a widespread use of folklore. One of the best movies I've watched in a long long time!!!

The kannada industry seems to be caught up in a certain time, mainly early 2000's. They are very scared to experiment with their content and also hero worshipping is still very much a thing. This leads to the so called 'commercial actors' to choose scripts which would appeal to their fanbase and masses and rarely or never experiment. Darshan, Sudeep, Yash, Dhurva Sarja, Puneet (may his soul rest in peace), Shivanna, all of them who are superstars are never seen in a role which would show them as characters rather than heroes. Puneet beautifully laid out a point in an interview saying that he as an actor cannot experiment because audiences have expectations from him but what he can do is to encourage new people to make movies through his production house and which he did beautifully when he was alive. The kannada industry is definitely seeing a boom now with Rakshit Shetty and others trying to make cinema which would break the shackles they are in rn. Ps. Can't deny the contributions that Uppi and Kashinath made in the early 90's and 2000's. They actually made offbeat cinemas, only if more people followed their path, maybe the kannada industry could have been on par with the Malayalam industry.

I believe since 2000s, through remakes it was a shortcut to earn quick bucks. Writers were neglected as their entire role was restricted to adaptation and dialogues. I stopped following Kannada movies for atleast a decade because of this. Then in 2010s, post Lucia (i was blown by the fact that it was crowd sourced, the levels Pawan Kumar went to fulfill his dream) it rekindled my interest. New age filmmakers like Rakshit, Rishab, Raj, Hemant Rao, Anup Bhandary, Prashant Neel, Santosh Anandram came into the industry. They were inspired by the 70s-90s period which included legends like Puttana Kangal Sir, Shankar Nag, Upendra etc. They built their own teams full of newcomers and technicians. Made movies with limited budget. Explored different genres and different cultural settings. Coastal Karnataka was hardly part of movie settings. On top of that, most of these people are well read, highly intellectual, deeply rooted with the culture and ethos of the land and that reflects in their movies. Rakshit hit the jackpot through Kirik Party, made with the budget of 2 crs and garnered 50cr+. In one interview, Rishab mentioned that Rakshit created a writers team called 7 odds. And ever since he was able to make money he started giving monthly remuneration to the writers. Rishab also started his own production house. Raj B Shetty never visited a set before his debut directorial Ondu Motteya kathe (shot in 12 days, btw GGVV was shot in 32 days). Because of these renewed emphasis on writing, we are getting better movies. Best part is, success of KGF has made Hombale Films very popular and they are not resting on their laurels. Hombale Films next 3 projects include one each with Pawan Kumar, Rishab Shetty and Rakshit Shetty. I can't wait for Richard Anthony. Looks like we are heading back to the golden period of Kannada movie industry.

For decades kannada films were stuck in a rut of remakes and brainless templates. Anything outside Bangalore was a side note,Mangalorean dialect of kannada was an element of comedy . Then came along few bold movies enthusiasts like Rakshit shetty and Rishab Shetty who bring a breath of fresh air to the kannada cinema. Reintroduced nuanced film making, layered story telling along with rediscovery of music. I am in awe of this brilliant piece of cinema by RajB shetty. In a age where movie stars are less about acting and more body building, RajB shetty embodies the character while giving such a powerful and chilling performance that deserves all the praise. Resemblance of shiva who wear minimalistic clothes and has simple lifestyle where as Hari / Vishnu who wear gold, fancy clothes and has luxury life. This is easily going to be one of my favorite. Hopefully ‘Charlie 777’by rakshith shetty releasing dec 31adds to this list. Thank you jammy for reviewing this. I hope through your video this movie gets a greater audience 👍🏻

Finally ❤️ This movie shows how much of acting ,music and cinematography can play a role with a simple story line and yet become a masterpiece . It's amazing how Hari didn't kill a single person yet we hate him in the end of the movie and Shiva killed everyone yet we end up liking and feeling sorry for him . And the way their younger selves bury their older version and unite is literally burying the evil in them and the greed for power.

Hey, so glad to see your review. I am a malayali who was brought up in Mangalore. I haven't appreciated kannada movie for the longest time due to the initial reasons you pointed out. However, the shetty team (Raj, Rishab,Rakshit) are alleviating the industry to heights. Their movie making method is finally making kannada movie notable on the pan indian level. This is such a revolution. Coming to what remains with me after watching this movie is the PiliVesha dance of Raj Shetty in front of the Mangaladevi Temple. On a side note, Mangalore representation before the Shetty Team was minimal or even nil; so this emergence of the trio is bringing focus on a place that deserves volumes of stories to be told.

Lucia is probably India's finest sci-fi. We need to recognise Sandalwood for films like Ulidavaru Kadanthe, Lucia, Kirrik Party, Avabe Srimanarayana, and not trash like KGF. The only redeemable aspect of KGF was its high production value, and soundtrack (though, it makes me cringe).

This kannada movie shows the authenticity one particular region without fearing about targeting vast audience. And Raj b shetty, rakshit shetty , Rishab shetty forming a powerful team in kfi which takes writers role way too seriously and pay them accordingly. This is why industry craves for new and passionate artists and directors who don't worry about profit margins rather worship their art. Kudos to Jammy for bringing it in as part of his review and awarding it with his sharp words. Cheers 🥂

Some mythological references • Details about Lord Shiva's birth is vague, it's believed that he was born in Paatala Loka (Paatal Lok), In this movie you'll find Shiva character in a ditch or hole referring to Paatal Lok • Shiva's neck : Around Lord Shiva's neck we see a snake, in the movie he has a scar ( there's a neck band-aid scene) resembling to it. Shiva's Tandava Nruthya : Referred to by Tiger Dance ( Huli Vesha / Pili Vesha) ( His smoking too) • Vishnu's Wealth : Lord Vishnu is accompanied by his wife Lakshmi ( Goddess of Wealth).. You'll see Hari in the movie studded with Gold and Vishnu being the traveller..

Definitely one of the greatest movies of Kannada. Proud kannadiga. Finally, gems like Rakshit, Rishab and Raj B Shetty making Kannada movies that are accepted across the world. Hats off to their creativity. Unfortunately most of the good Kannada movies do not have subtitles online. This is where Kannada film industry lacks too. If you don't showcase your gems in the international market, how will you grab eyeballs. Upendra, Puttana Kanagal, Sunil Kumar Desai were cult directors who gave evergreen movies which were commercially hit too.

Thank you Jammy from the bottom of my heart. I was about to recommend you this movie over twitter only to be pleasantly surprised by this video. This is what a good movie Indian movie should aspire to be. They have simple story with extremely good screenplay and direction from Raj.B.Shetty. No unnecessary item songs or sexualization of women that is too common in Bollywood. Most importantly, they have not shied away from showing and celebrating the native culture with the tiger dance. Unlike Bollywood, this movie is proud of our diverse Indian culture and exhibits this pride unabashedly. Expressing the culture of the land is the reason why Korean movies and series have been very successful around the world. Let this movie be a learning lesson for any aspiring filmmaker. A proud Kannadiga

I haven't seen many kannada films but one of my all time favorite is Dweepa by late soundarya. It is directed by Gireesh Kasarvally, renowned director and produced by soundarya herself. The film tells the story of a village which is on the verge of getting submerged post the construction of a dam. It beautifully explore the conflict of development and how it deeply affects certain communities who closely connected to nature. Not so surprisingly most of the kannadiga people I know haven't even seen this film. Such a masterpiece.

I am so so so so soooooo super happy you reviewed a Kannada movie. I am your ardent fan. Its Kannadigas. I see a lot of people already talked about KFI (Kannada Film Industry). Here are my 2 cents. KFI is kinda mix of Tamil/ Telugu & Malayalam industry. You will see on one hand Stars who rake in a lot of moolah like Sudeep, Darshan, Puneet Rajkumar, Shiv Rajkumar etc who have high budget movies, physics defying fight scenes, song & dance - item numbers. They also at times do movies which dont follow the formula. One the other hand we have few Directors like Yograj Bhat, Suri & Sumana Kittur - (who literally broke the monotony and started the bold trend of experimentation in 2004-2005). New age directors who continued to bring is such amazing stories - horror, suspense, thrillers - Pawan Kumar, Hemanth M Rao,(Screenplay for Andhadhun) & Anup Bhandari. And we have this super amazing Mangalore gang of Shetty's whom we are amazingly proud of !! The current landscape is very promising. But the only problem we have is that Kannadigas dont watch Kannada movies. A lot of kannadigas dont respect their own language and good things we have. Hence movies dont make as much as they do in other languages.

But recently after Rakshit shetty and writers like raj b shetty and the underated Hemanth Rao who did godi Banna and kavalu dari. Kannada industry has to work on upbringing such good directors and writers and the audiences have to back such movies

One main problem Kannada Film Industry faced was boom of real estate business in Bangalore around 2000s which made lot of people invest money in films just for the sake of it and art took a back seat. Thats when the quantity of sensitive films reduced and lot of remakes increased which in turn lost lot of Kannada audience. Thankfully things are changing and future look bright for KFI

I feel soo proud right now to see a separate video on just a Kannada movie in this channel!! Always followed you to before watching most of the hindi movie for a review. This is a proud moment that you watched this movieand moreover understood the conceptsoo well!! There was Era in Kannada movie when Shankarnag did various experiments in Kannada movie industry, and now this trip of shetty's (Raj, Rakshit and Rishab) are creating another Era. You should watch "Sarkari hiriya prathamika shaale" "Ratnan prapancha" "Kirik party" "simple agi ond love story" "love mocktail" "diya" many more! There's no extreme fights or unnecessary romance scenes or songs. Highly recommend you to watch them. Also one of the problem in Kannada industry is that there are more mass movie lovers who like unrealistic fights and over rated dialogs. I really hope we get more movies of this kind.

This movie was so underrated. It could have been so much more, Kannada film industry always face competition from 5 languages i.e., Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. When a big movie release like "Pushpa" and "83" came to Bengaluru. All the theater screens were given to them. Do you know "Pushpa" a telugu movie had got almost 600 shows in and around Bengaluru. The next week "83" came along. When Goverment had made rule to give preference to "Kannada" language people. All these multiples associations went to court and took of tat rule. Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam are not at all competing with any other language whenever a good movie is released. Over here whenever a good movie is released some other language will come and occupy the space. This problem has been faced from early 2010, This was all due to Mani Ratnam case when he put case that the screen limit should be taken off. Before all the movies had max limit of screen numbers. Now there is no limit that is why our language is not getting the space and recognition it deserves.
