MFers forgot that third games and remakes existed before DLCs and, in this case, VGC ruleset changes. ORAS and XY metagames were completely different beasts from each other, and even BW1 & BW2 had pretty different threats within OU/Ubers (the Therian genies did not exist in BW1). I think researching what game freak said during X and Y interviews would help a bit, that they were trying to give them specifically to old mons and give them new options, trying to put them on par with legends etc. It really shows where how they aren't a bad concept but where they screwed up implementing it at times.
@christiancinnabars14026 ай бұрын
I hope now that VGC has become a staple since then, and now that they've leaned a lot more into the competitive aspects of the game, that any new or even returning Megas can avoid the issue of being overtuned for the niche they're intended to fill. I'm fine with the Primal Reversions and Mega Ray being strong (although Mega Ray really steps into fangame territory with not needing a held item to Mega Evolve and having an ability that removes all of its Flying-type weaknesses while also overriding the weather), but there's no reason why _Mega Kangaskhan_ should suddenly be broken beyond belief and be either banned or an overcentralizing force in standard competitive play. Mega Pseudos can also still work. Mega Garchomp was a step in the right direction, but... Sand Force. Megagross and Megamence had the exact opposite issue, being given abilities that were _too strong._ They should have gotten the memo from Mega Tyranitar and just kept their abilities as is (double intimidate from Megamence would have been kind of funny to see, although Moxie might have been the chosen Mega ability if Blaziken and Scizor are anything to go off of; as in, the strongest offensive ability would be chosen). The boost from Tough Claws is nice and Aerilate fits in perfectly with Salamence's lore, but the former should have been given to _regular_ Metagross and the latter is way too strong of an ability for a 700 bst mon, even if it can't use any other item.

Golem will always be one of the most tragic cases of this. Gen 1: Starts off strong in OU but the meta develops in a way that doesn't suit it. It's now NU; Gen 2: Gains Rapid Spin, is actually one of the best Pokémon in the meta and a top 10 pick in OU; Gen 3: Loses Rapid Spin, never touches OU again, as it's severely outclassed by Rhydon which is kinda outclassed by Metagross, stuck in UU but not that bad. Gen 4 to Gen 7: Never gets Rapid Spin, still outclassed by Rhydon and most importantly Rhyperior now, always bound to whichever is the lowest tier. Even gets its Explosion nerfed. Gen 8: Absent. Not sure I'd say that Eggy was powercrept exactly, except maybe by Celebi. In gen 1, psychic grass was one of the best typings and a lot of Eggy's traits fit the environment very well. Lots of changes since then hurt Eggy like drastically lowered spdef with the combined special stat being abolished, introduction of Dark and Steel types, EVs reducing bulk across the board which makes his speed much more of a problem, Explosion nerfs, Pursuit Trapping, crippling weakness to one of the best moves in the game U-turn from gen 4 onward, physical/special split allowing physical Dark moves and special Ghost moves, Knock off becoming one of the best moves in the game, etc. In modern gens, in the tiers he ends up in he's not getting outclassed by better statlines and movepools, his traits just aren't what you want anymore.

Jolteon really got screwed over by just sheer Game Freak neglect over the years. In fact, pretty much all Eeveelutions are in the ditches right now, with even the competitive leaders of the line, Espeon and Sylveon, not even breaking NU in Smogon Singles or having over a .5% usage in VGC. Which is surprising, since they've been trying to make Eevee the series's secondary mascot (although at the same time, the Pikachu line also sees very poor competitive usage and constant neglect). I'm thinking that Eevee itself should get the Kommo-o treatment, where it is given a regular version of its Z-Move. Two gens late, but better late than never. In this case, Extreme Evoboost boosting its stats by +2 becomes just Evoboost, boosting its stats by +1. Then it can keep the move when it evolves, giving all Eeveelutions access to an omni-boosting move. Would this break any of the Eeveelutions? I think Espeon could become strong in UU (or even see decent usage in OU, who knows) with Stored Power, but its low phys def regardless probably weighs it down from being really broken and it has no Speed Boost to carry it the same way as Espathra. Sylveon probably makes it out of RU thanks to the Speed raises from the move and now being able to setup in front of some physical attackers, but its movepool leaves it quite vulnerable to Steels outside of hard commiting to Tera. And the rest of the Eeveelutions probably make it to ~RU/UU level with the boosts; Flareon and Jolteon become better setup sweepers, and Umbreon and Vaporeon become a lot more annoying as walls as they're now able to boost both their Defense and Sp. Def at the same time. Leafeon and Glaceon I have a hard time seeing making it past RU even with an omni-boost at their disposal, but maybe they can make something work with Tera (but again, they'd have to hard commit to the Tera slot if they want to break past Steel mons).
@lucasgreer17366 ай бұрын
I would think that evoboost would do a lot for leafeon, it actually has a really good stat spread that only lacks special bulk, it just suffers from a bit too little bst for a balanced spread like it has sylveon is one of the coolest niche vgc picks but I think it's fairly outclassed rn

I guess there is not a lot of Pokémon that want to terra into Steel. Poor Magnezone...
@SpritePony6 ай бұрын
I want to make one MAJOR point about Mag real quick: Yes, Steels CAN Tera to try to get away from it, but this is a two-fold problem for the trapped mon; 1. They have to forcibly burn their Tera on a Pokemon they may not *want* to Tera in that game. This is a HUGE commitment and you need to get something amazing out of it in this scenario, otherwlse it's a bad Tera. 2. They have to remain in for at least one more turn to burn the Tera, and then switch out. This means that the trapped mon WILL have to eat some damage in order to flee. This also gives the Mag player a heads up that the opponent will be switching next turn, and allow them to adjust their play accordingly. The main reason why Mag isn't as good as it was anymore is actually because of the still widespread use of switch moves; U-Turn and the like. On top of this, the game's BEST Steel-type, Gholdengo, DOESN'T get trapped by Mag. Or anything, really. Ghost got SEVERELY overbuffed with the ability to give the middle finger to any and all forms of trapping, it's disgusting. If Dengo didn't have that, Mag could have a stronger niche in making Gholdengo's life just a little harder. It's always a feels good moment to watch a Mag successfully trap a Skarm or Corv that lacks U-Turn.

Just some advice for your video making, try to slow down your commentary, it can be hard to keep up and isn’t as clear. I rush my speech all the time whenever I’ve gotta do video assignments but slowing down helps a TON.

Cinderace. Was a God in Gen 8 and a total behemoth until they took away his Gmax. Okay? He's still pretty good cuz of Protean. Well they broke his kneecaps and made the ability garbage. Now my favourite bunny bun drinks alone telling tales of how he used to top regionals.:/

Would be good if there was emphasis on the ‘mons being bad NOW in VGC /Regulation B, C, D etc. I was expecting Gengar with Levitate disappearing
