This was an excellent and thorough explanation. I had never understood the differences between different types of cholesterol before. Thank you!

I think that health is multi faceted. Yes to good nourishing plant based food! Sometimes I just need to get out of my own worrisome head. I believe our bodies are amazing and will work to heal itself if we let it. I try to get the sun in my face with an early morning walk. It sets my circadian clock and improves my sleep. Sleep is definitely a pillar of health for your bodies repair. I delay my first meal to somewhere between 10-12. I build movement into my life by doing things that I enjoy. Get out in Nature and just be present. There is so much to see if you look. It’s spring right now and everything is budding, flowers are emerging, insects are coming back as well as birds migrating in and out. Make time to see friends and family, and really practice listening to their stories. Bonus points for combining these together! Peace.

I wish there was a test for being able to tell if u naturally make too much cholesterol versus dietary. My doctor is talking about putting me on a med and im fine with doing that if its bc of genetics, but id like to be sure its that and not diet.
@Kellysher9 ай бұрын
I believe there is genetic testing to see if you have familial hypercholesterolemia. I went 99% plant based since October. I’m waiting until June to rerun the bloodwork. If I’m still high, my doctor recommended that genetic test. At least it’s a data point to have. My parents had high cholesterol, but they also had sedentary lifestyle and ate a lot of meats and dairy. As well as processed foods.

My plant based cardiologist said some people just produce a lot of cholesterol even with a clean diet and exercise. I had a coronary calcium score of 0 and if I have another one at the 5 year mark and is still zero he said my risk of heart disease is very low.

Your thoughts… for most plant-based, doctors and health professionals are sending mixed messages in that. They are not speaking with one voice and one way of eating.. When we think about the Atkins diet, we know exactly what that means. When we think about the South Beach diet, we know exactly what that means. When we think about that old grapefruit diet, we know exactly what that means. When we think about the whole Food plant based lifestyle, we don’t know exactly what that means. it would be very helpful to our movement. If all these doctors and plant based health professionals would get together come up with one name for the lifestyle change and say the same thing., even if it means compromising in order to set a standard, so we will know exactly what that means… what is good to eat and what is not good to eat

Personally, I don’t think anyone has nailed down exactly what we should eat based on the science today. There is so much confusion and arguing out there. Keto, carnivore, omnivore, blue zone, Mediterranean, vegetarian,vegan, WFPB. It makes my head spin. We are a tribal species! I approach this as what NOT to eat. Cut out all highly processed foods and added sugars. Reduce the use of oils in cooking. Chris Gardners approach is what can we agree on! I follow this 99% of the time, with room for real life, and still occasionally eating out with friends. My cholesterol was high, so I don’t eat eggs and limit cheese. Primarily I eat plant based. I don’t want to depend on supplements other than a multivitamin and work to have a diverse range of plants. I don’t think lean wild caught fish or chicken are evil, I just don’t eat them right now, going on 7 months. I don’t miss meat. I like to cook and can see myself sticking to this for life. I cook for friends and family who are always surprised at how good plant based food tastes. I keep telling them I like this and it’s not a punishment to eat this way! Intuitively this way of eating makes sense to me. I don’t want a set of rules, I need something sustainable. I’m not on a diet, it’s a lifestyle choice.

What are the mixed messages about a whole food plant based (WFPB) diet that you are receiving? WFPB means foods that are not processed or very minimally processed (like soy milk, tofu, tempeh or soy curls) Whole foods are foods that still have their fiber, phytonutrients and most water content intact…or reabsorbed like beans and grains. So what we prepare to eat still looks like how it did when harvested. It also means no oil because that’s a processed fat. A WFPB diet would have fats in whole form like from avocados, nuts and seeds instead of pressed or refined out. That is the basic, universal definition that all agree on. Where I hear differing advice from physicians depends on the topic. If a patient has heart disease or venous insufficiency, then a plant-based physician may prescribe no fats at all…even whole -form fats…until the sensitive endothelial lining of blood vessels are healed. If you have a plant-based doctor whose specialty is reversing autoimmune disease, she may have a specific protocol that includes removing cooked foods and only focusing on raw cruciferous vegetables and flax/chia until the patient is healed (then add in WFPB cooked foods again while continuing to eliminate animal products and processed foods). If a physician is guiding about weight loss, he or she may guide a client to consume low calorie-density foods like non-starchy vegetables, fruit, potatoes, legumes while minimizing higher calorically dense whole foods like coconuts, avocados, nuts. It depends on the goal and the specialty. 🌱💚

Thank you, Dr. Marbas, for addressing this. I went WFPB over 5 years ago due to ldl above 190, brought it down to 117 for five years and at my last lipid panel my ldl and total numbers are up again. I have settled on peri/menopause being the culprit and am redoubling down on some dietary sneakiness I’ve let back in. Appreciate you speaking to the interplay between cholesterol and menopause.

Im hoping someone can answer my question about eggs. I know they are high in cholesterol, but what about eggbeaters, which is egg whites. Are they bad too?

Normally fat is stored in adipose tissue. But excess fat causes visceral fat. Does anyone know where and how that fat visceral fat is stored, ie, does it just occupy the space in between cells, that is, just float in the interstitial fluid? With no attachment to any structure? It is difficult to find this answer. Thanks, great video AJ and Doc Laurie. I tried Googling for this question but to no avail....

It appeared much of this lecture at the beginning was read fast and peppered with the questions, "OK?" and "Right?" Unfortunately, not "ok" for me not having attended medical school, learned Latin, studied chemistry or speed reading/listening/comprehension. No subtitles or captions available, perhaps that feature got confused especially by the sometimes-unintelligible speech pattern as I was - even slowed down to 75%. Much more useful for me at 32+. Eliminate saturated and reduce trans fats - right! Be physically active - right! Eat plants - right! Etc. The attempt to make cholesterol easy to understand was lost on me. I think this mostly is a result of my own limitations.

Not everyone is at your level. Not everyone is a medical pro here, but have read on these topics. PCRM and Dr. Bernard have the nicest, friendliest, most simplified talks on loads of topics - absolute beginner level, often with as little as good no foreign terms. The listing of different types of cholesterol - that's always confusing. Too bad not all videos have undertitles, I like those too. I disagree with the speech "pattern", she has a high pitched voice though. I got used to it. There are plenty of other FREE videos online. You can do a search.

Around min 36 - ways to increase physical activity in daily life without considering it "exercise". What she mentions is what many used to do before those dreaded voice command smart houses (I hate those, just get up and turn the darn device on manually, I do not want to talk to "nothing"), delievery services for everything everytime... I like the increasing your rate of speed while walking suggestion. Walking like a slug is good for sightseeing. One thing some do is get off one bus stop earlier and then walking that extra stop. BTW - the one hig tech device that everyone loves is a t.v. remote control. My deceases MIL understood nothing of new technolog ý and refused to even try, but loved that device. That was the start of moving less, smile.
