I took two blood pressure medications for over thirty years. Four months ago, I completely eliminated added salt and processed foods from my diet. Within three days of starting, I had to stop taking my meds because my BP fell to dangerous levels. I can't believe I wasted all that time and money, not to mention my health!

I remember as a child, I used to (unprompted by anything but my own taste preference) leave my food unsalted. Everyone hated my unsalted cooking; and slowly I was convinced to like salt too. But I eventually went full circle, and now I love my unsalted food, as I was born to love;)

Hi AJ, salt therapy rooms are for treating respiratory conditions. They are great for clearing out mucus and phlegm from sinuses, throat and lungs. I hear that it's great for people with cystic fibrosis. I have been in one and it's very relaxing, chair can be reclined, music is calming. According to the information I received the small amount of salt inhaled will not affect things like BP.

Are you on angiotensin meds or calcium channel blockers? Those medications screw with your adrenal glands and heart muscle. I’d talk to your doctor about switching your diuretic if you’re on one to chlorthalidone, the least dangerous of the other diuretics. Also, you have to find a way to incorporate foods with high potassium levels. Double up on your potassium, and unfortunately if you don’t cut out meat with severe uncontrolled htn, it will never get down. You have to eliminate all meat, poultry and fish from the diet. I’m speaking from experience unfortunately 🥲

The "Salt Room" question - I know these from Germany, they're not chic cafes - although some make it really nice with chaise lounge chairs, colored lights ... In certain areas there are natural salt caves and people with certain alliments go under ground and breath in the salt air. Think about how some people feel better when they spend time at salt water vacation spots? Every kid in Berlin gets told they have bronchitis or asthma. They go home to the sea and all of their problems disappear. I never looked into them, but I know these places exist. You are not breathing in "salt" dust, as the doctor said might happen in industrial production.

There is too much Salt, Oil and Sugar in processed foods today. (SOS) People need to take personal responsibility for their life and health. The general over all health of people has declined the last few decades. Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods. Being thin is a sign of good health. Being over weight or obese is a sign of bad health. Poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity are contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

FWIW, Dr. Barnard in a youtube video recommends or suggests that those on a low salt vegan diet, whole foods, add good old fashioned Morton IODIZED salt to meals after cooking, just a pinch. His main point was to make sure adequate iodine intake. I carefully measured how much salt is in "my" pinch, and it's less than 1/4 teaspoon, i.e. less than 500 mg. I add that only twice a day, to my morning salt free oatmeal, and on my dinner over no salt rice/veggies. Rest of day only other salt I get is in a slice of toasted whole grain wheat bread, maybe a half teaspoon of butter over potato, 8 ounces of soy or almond milk, that's it. I've done the calculations on exactly what I ate that day a few times and my total averages about 1.300 to 1.700 mgs. On rare occasions when I know I had too much salt, maybe with family or friends at restaurant or special occasion, I mix 1,000 mg of potassium (1/2 teaspoon salt substitute) in half cup of water to drink....I don't know if this is worthless or not to counter the excess sodium, but it's what I do.

I eat a lot of pink and grey salt (only) I have always had hypotension. My blood pressure averages about 80/50. I do swell up after eating. I’m on a strict WFPB diet except I drink coffee and drink wine. The fact that I swell up from salt shows it’s effect on my body, even if I have low blood pressure. I do have a tendency for pre-diabetic high blood sugar and high bad cholesterol despite being WFPB, no oils, this is a genetic component from my father’s side who had diabetes and cardio vascular disease on the standard American diet. I started running 1 mile every morning, this may lower my bad cholesterol, need to get my blood tested again next month. If I had definite information that salt was a detriment to my health, I would stop consuming it…refined salt is unhealthy, but all the minerals in grey and pink salt might be healthy????

Health care costs are out of control. Going WFPB vegan can save money, pain and suffering from disease. Lower your chance of high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer by going vegan. Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices.

Potatoes themselves are not bad for you. What people put on them gives them a bad name. So eat them without butter, bacon, salt, etc
