"How to win friends and influence", Tzun Zu, Shinto, and being "contrary". Just a few tools. Meditation gives more of an impact, once you know what you are looking to experience. I found, that once I found "My Center" and settled there, it was much easier to remain, and not "react" to persons or situations that were designed to push a person off center. As life goes on, you become more confident, in this "Centrism". As long as your willing to challenge yourself, you will continue on this path. Lack of the challenge - and life will find a way to move me, whenever I stopped. It is a path - not a place. Cheers

Two ethos I have been living with before I discovered Stoicism: 1. You cannot affect or change how others act or react. You can only change how you respond. 2. Focus on how you interact with the world, not how others do. Be aware of your short-comings so you can improve, and be aware of your strengths so you can use them.

In the Marine Corps we often said "Embrace the suck". That's a very stoic concept to embrace that I struggle to explain to my civilian co-workers now. The tend to think of the phrase as meaning just acknowledge that work sucks, quit complaining, and get on with it. It means so much more than that. Embrace the suck because it is in the suck that you grow.

I understand what you mean completely. It's not about keeping in mind that it sucks, but focusing on making the most out of it in spite of the suck

I like that "Embrace the suck", I use those words often to push, to do, to get to my destination despite the suffering and discomfort. It also reminds me of how Nietzsche placed a lot of value on suffering, even to the point of saying without suffering life would be pointless.

Zen Buddhism courtesy of Eckhart Tolle was what led me to the level and controlled state of mind I have today. Despite depression and anxiety I’m able to remain positive and alert and enjoy myself all the while! I’ve been learning recently about how much it intersects with stoicism and more specifically I’ve heard stoic ataraxia being compared to nirvana!

I would also recommend it as a means of remaining calm under conditions that most people would Panic in. I can practice by thinking of an event where I was filled with negative thoughts and energy. I will pull these thoughts in to provoke the same response within me and then release the negativity I obtain from it away. I begin to feel no pain from the event and I typically find optimism within it. It's like reaching into a dark void to grab a light you can't see. No, I'd rather not go back into this void but to treat and potentially cure it, it's necessary. Once that light (rather an optimistic outlook) is found and more understood, the darkness begins to fade away and that event will become more lit with positivity rather than negativity on the initial thought of it. Like a past relationship where it felt like you were stabbed in the heart, or sickened from a huge financial loss, or a friend being murdered. Sometimes you have to internally face the evil to find closure within yourself. You have to find and LEARN the positives of that event to replace the negatives. Positive memories usually fade quicker than negative ones. This emotionally replaced memory will stop reoccurring as often and drift into forgetfulness.

I never thought about it that way, but in a way I practiced intentionally being an outcast so to speak 2 years ago. I did a temporary ordination for two weeks as a Buddhist nun and shaved my head, knowing I had to go back to work in a conservative part of the world and back out in a conservative community. The ordination was so important to me that it overrode anything that anyone thought about me, as my spiritual progress and personality development is really all I have to hang my hat on anyway. People certainly thought I was strange and it certainly did force me to let go of relying on “looking good” as a way of having value as a person.

"All important matters require uncomfortable conversations" wow I'm gonna keep that in mind, but the tricky part is knowing when and not just deliberately challenging yourself. That's unsocial, unnecessary, negative, toxic behavior for the people around you. Unless you don't know them at all or value them little to where they are of no consequence.

Very good talk, I did lear some things but I have my critique. Planned suffering may not work as much as you would hope, because no matter how much you put yourself through, you know.. and its NOT deep down inside, its obvious that you can end your 'suffering' any moment you wish. Fasting on will is NOT the same as not finding food.

@J Alberto Perez That could be exactly the same thing. Taking a cold shower is also NOT the same as jumping in river. same as someone who is training with guns and playing paintball wars for years does not mean he is "mentally" ready for war. It helps yes but like i said in my original comment "not as much as you would hope".
@mohdktln
@mohdktln 5 жыл бұрын
@J Alberto Perez You are right, in many cases that like the one you mentioned, it helps immensely. What I got from the vid was more like: I will starve myslef so when I find myself in an apocalyptic scenario, or sudden poverty, it would help. I thought that there were so many variables that were being ignored. Maybe I was too too picky or overly critical.
@iz2333
@iz2333 5 жыл бұрын
@@mohdktln Just think about it this way Who has a higher chance of survival, outside during winter; Someone who always takes warm showers or someone who always takes cold showers? Planned "suffering" with cold showers gets your mind and body more used to any freezing situation. Furthermore learning to overcome one kind of suffering, will generally increase mental resilience.

Some people develop a degree of stoicism after the coming through a crisis, not unscathed but mostly unharmed. It's also a really painful experience but I don't think we can grow successfully from child to an adult without being reactionary, impulsive etc. Perhaps that's what successful crises teach us. I hope at least. For some experiential learning might be the only way.

Interesting, it would seem what I've considered common sense for the last 20 years is called stoicism. I will have to learn more. Many thanks for the video

As for being practised in some bad situations : I often take my experience of being excessively bullied at school (high school) as a reminder of how well I'm doing today (I'm in my fifties). Just my 2 cents.

Mondira Paul Heya, love the vid! I was wondering if you or anyone has any ideas for essay questions regarding stoicism? I’m doing IB Latin and really want to research stoicism and translate/analyse the original quotes - however, for the course I need to make my own essay question... any suggestions or tips?
