What is the guy playing at the beginning of the video? Sounds nice.

That’s a guy by the name of Jascha Heifetz playing Paganini’s 24th caprice. Yeah I guess he’s alright.

Very helpful! When I try to practice 3rds and 6ths (unlike octaves, 4ths, and 5ths) in scales, I always wonder what intonation systems I should use. Should I just stick to Pythagorean intonation like usual, or use just intonation instead? If so, which note should I "adjust" ? Higher notes or lower notes? What about when one note is one of the open string notes? Is it going to be an exception?

It’s a great question and I may go down a rabbit hole second guessing my answer here. I’m not sure if what I do is the most ‘correct.’ Obviously when it comes to tuning systems you sometimes have to make compromises. However, my simple answer is that when doing scales I tend to prioritize what sounds flush with the drone. There are a lot of things to think about though here. I found this extensive thread with a lot of solid ideas on the subject that may be helpful if you want to take a deeper dive. www.violinist.com/discussion/archive/19484/

@@priceviolinacademy Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the link! It’s always interesting to hear different perspectives on tuning systems. Prioritizing what sounds good with the drone makes a lot of sense and seems like a practical approach. I’ll definitely check out the thread you mentioned for more insights. Thanks again for the resource!

when shifting in a slur I have to release pressure of the fingers or do I shift with the same pressure I use to play the double stops?
@priceviolinacademy

Release the pressure in both the left hand and the right hand even when shifting under a slur. Keeping the pressure on will make the shift very difficult to get consistent. 👍 Watch out for the shifting video which will go more into detail.

@@priceviolinacademy oh i thought you'd already realeased the video, so i misunderstood. will you talk about portamento too? this is the thing i really haven't practised yet, just 'normal' shifting. thanks for the reply!

For sure! I’ll chat about 3 types of shifts and one of those is the new finger shift which is used for portamento. Thanks for commenting. 👍
