That is something I’ve struggled with intensely for literally forever because I never was able to have loose enough fingers and it genuinely was so hard and frustrating for me. Turns out my bow hold was actually wrong, but it wasn’t that noticeable I guess cause no one really said anything. Anyway I have since fixed the issues and can somewhat (not perfectly) blow through a passage like this and it’s literally amazing too see the difference😅

I think this is true of most things. People only see the results, not the process. I've had basically this same discussion about my 'talent' with computers. No, I've just been poking at deeper and more complex parts, experimenting with new technologies, languages, ideas - for hours, every day, for the last three decades. Can you imagine if I hadn't learned a few tricks along the way?
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy 18 күн бұрын
Yeah I think you’re right on this. It’s odd how certain skills gets lumped into the talent category. Spend enough focused time on anything and you’re going to get good.

I was wondering when I would get some pushback! :) Thanks for the comment. I definitely don’t want to totally discount natural ability. I’ve definitely come across people where it seems like it comes naturally but I do think that when it comes to really mastering a skill long term, it has more to do with the process, or how they practice, than talent.

Great, simply great! I love your videos. Do you advise any difference in efficient bow hold for a viola player? There’s very little information about it on KZbin.
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy 25 күн бұрын
Thanks Raphael! And I don’t think there’s any significant difference in the viola bow hold. The hand and fingers do have to be even more loose to engage the thicker strings but the principles are the same. I should also say that I’ve played the viola infrequently but I think dedicated violists would agree.
@siriusblack9017

I recently started Suzuki Book 3 and it would be helpful to practice your tips along with what my teacher is telling me. Sometimes I forget to bring my thumb adequately to the third position with my finger. Also moving the first finger between strings on the third position often fails and is not in tune, because I don't know why I move it a little back and my teacher could not fix it yet (e.g after playing G on the "D string" with my first finger, I play C# on the "A string" incorrectly)
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy 25 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I hope the exercises help supplement your teachers ideas. When hopping the 1st finger from string to string, just isolate that one transition and practice it in a methodical way. Make sure your hand is relaxed and not squeezing the neck. Pretty sure it won’t take long to get it in tune. 👍

when going back to 1st position we don't need to use the ghost notes too? just lift the finger and shift back? or just not in this early stage of practising?
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy Ай бұрын
Good question. In this stage of practicing, I don’t ghost on the way down. You should have a sure feeling of where 1st position when starting this exercise so I feel that it adds unnecessary complication. Typically, however, we will want a ghost note on the way down. Also, if ghosting helps you here, it definitely won’t hurt. 👍

how can one supinate for smooth bow changes at frog if one is pronated? Does one scrunch up the plane of the knuckles until they r essentially flat extending on the downbow toward the tip?
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy Ай бұрын
Yeah good question. I can see how that’s confusing. Perhaps supinate is not the perfect word here. It’s only a mild supination if so. More than a drastic supination the idea is that the weight of the arm is being transferred into the ringer finger and pinky. This will result in a flattening of the knuckles like you described. The shift in weight should be gradual and be accompanied by a slow motion colle which will relax the bow hand. Hope that makes sense. Some of the later videos in the tone series go more into depth on this topic so check those out if you haven’t already. 👍

Your voice inflection is fascinating - it goes downward from a normal tone to a vocal fry. I've never heard that before. I find it quite pleasing to listen to. You should get into voice acting! Question though, you say the bicep is important to its origination - but the bicep should never be tensed/flexed, right?
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy Ай бұрын
That’s so nice! I actually did think about my voice inflection right when I started making vids because I felt that I sounded monotone so that’s really nice to hear. As to your question, it’s a good one. If you want to get into the nitty gritty, some element of muscle use is required for everything we do on the instrument, BUT the amount is so minimal that it’s counterproductive generally to talk about it. Usually people just have way too much tension. So the true answer is that there is slight muscle twitch in the bicep, but if you notice it, it’s probably way too much. Definitely not what most would call tension. Hope that helps!

23 more to go! Kidding, but it would actually be useful to have same kind of video for other common scales. I don't know if it's a bit redundant. This video is enough to get a feeling for it even if you go to a different scale. I like this demo because it doesn't focus so much on really fast brilliant tempos but is still very well played.
@priceviolinacademy
@priceviolinacademy Ай бұрын
Haha yeah making one for each scale is definitely a possibility. I was thinking this one could be used to get a sense of the progression which would then be applicable to all the other scales. I have some other videos in the works that I think will be more immediately helpful but this is the 2nd request I’ve gotten to make one for every scale. If a few more come in, I’ll definitely bump it up the priority list. 👍

Tricky to answer this in a comment. The easiest way is probably to just grab Barbara Barber’s scale book for advanced violinists. It’s a pretty standard arpeggio progression and the book will help you out long term so you’ve got all the stuff together conveniently. 👍
