Purchased this Aferiy combo last month. Exceptional quality. Both the power pack and the 200w solar panels tested on various household items. Freezer, fridge etc took the challenge and gave hours of power. Fast charge. Solar panels charged up the powerack. I had no experience with this type of power pack, used a noisy gas generator when needed. Setup and installation, smooth and simple.6

Thanks Lynn, indeed you are right, this is a great system for someone who has no idea what they are doing and is brand new to power packs, solar panels, etc. You can rig up your own solar panels for cheaper, but this one comes with a really nice carrying pack, already installed cables that are ready to plug right into this unit. I'd definitely recommend just picking up both straight from Aferiy. I recommended that to my mother in law just now. We were thinking of putting in a larger stand alone system, but I'm so much happier with this one. Sure, I can't throw a huge party and go on living like there's no power outage at all (2000W versus say a 10kW standalone), but this is also like $10k cheaper, and portable, so I can take it on our camping trips in the middle of Algonquin.

Thanks so much Keith, we also could have used this 2 years ago camping in Arrowhead in late September, power went out after our first day in, and never came back for the rest of our eight day stay there, mind you the WB temp. wasn't an issue as we almost froze to death (exaggeration), as it was so cold during that time. Great Idea. Thanks again.

This is definitely what I would consider the most important prep. Power can save lives. If winter time is a concern, try to buy a low watt portable space heater. See what power it draws, and get a unit that can power it. 2000W is a medium size unit. You could go smaller or bigger. Know that this one weights about 40lbs.

Thank you for reviewing this. We are in Nova Scotia and it is not unusual to have power outages in inclement weather here. We have solar panels (200 watt and 100 watt) from our days of off-grid RVing, so I have been looking for something like this. I will take a serious look at this powerpack.

I have a little 2200W Honda generator that I used occasionally when I was living off grid (no solar, no well, no anything) in northern Idaho. I didn’t have appliances, no fridge, etc so I mostly used it to power tools. It’s actually pretty quiet in eco-mode. I’ll def keep it as another backup option. Fast forward a couple years and I’m now living in SE PA and purchased a very old house where the previous owners had a pretty large (for this size of house) grid-tied solar system installed. But even in broad daylight, if power goes out, I’m SOL. Most of my neighbors have whole house backup generators and the noise is ridiculous. I definitely want to invest in a battery backup and have it set up to be on when power is out but haven’t started to explore options yet and I need to educate myself on what those options are and what makes the most sense.

Yeah, gas generators CAN be really loud. There's definitely a large spectrum of noise, and some of the smaller ones that are really well built can be nice and stealthy. I think it's a really important thing to not broadcast to the world that you are a prepper and likely have lots of food.

Unrelated to the video but: Since you unfortunately lost your chickens and now you have to wait for next season to get some again, maybe you could consider having ducks. I’m saying this cause it seems like you would have a wonderful habitat for them in terms of the numerous ponds that you have, this way you would have already solved the water problem, or at least I’d think so. Also they’re more cold hardy than the chickens since they have a fat layer and a sub layer of feathers,and they also live longer (the productive years for producing eggs are more before the slowdown). 99% you already though about this so sorry if it’s redundant Thanks a lot for your channel, it’s inspiring me so much and gave me so many ideas to implement! Since you made me discover sea buck thorn I’ve been so hooked on it and I managed to find a nursery that can procure them and I can’t wait to plant them! I have a question: would u think planting paw paw in a wooded area would be a good idea (to mimic his natural habitat)? As it gets bigger I can cut some plants around it to give it more sunlight

The unit is ~2000 CAD, solar panels $500. Right now there is a $600 discount for this promotion on the unit and another $100 on the panels, which is pretty significant. A 2000W gas generator is roughly $1500, but then comes with yearly maintenance, cleaning, and needs gas. So you need to stockpile a bunch of gas cans, because when you need it, you may not be able to refill gas. So then you need to also rotate through your gas stock, because it only lasts about a year. And the gas units are loud, (making you a target), and also bad for environment. The biggest issue though is that if you don't run them regularly and maintain them, you may find it doesn't work when it comes time when you need it the most. All in all, at this price point, for an electric backup power pack, this can't be beat. That's just my opinion though. This video was sponsored by Aferiy, but these comments are mine and mine alone.

@@CanadianPermacultureLegacyAgree with all this…for the most part. I have a solar power pack that I can use during about half the year, but living in the PNW, there are many periods during the winter when I literally might not get any substantial sun exposure for a week at a time….constant overcast skies and lots of rain. So, I also have a 4500W dual-fuel inverter generator that I primarily use with propane when it’s needed, and it runs pretty efficiently and relatively quiet (~55-60 dB) actually. A small solar generator does me very little good during my winters.

The biggest pro is there is zero maintenance on an electrical power pack. The biggest con would probably be that they have less battery in the cold.

I am moving to Alberta in the spring, so considering some sort of system to help keep my green house warm. Do you think this could supply enough to power a heater for a 10'x10' green house? I'm thinking it could also be helpful in the event of a power out. I have no idea how often that happens there.
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 9 ай бұрын
That depends on the heat source, and how well its insualted. Its impossoble to answer, because it can vary so much. However, a space heater tends to be a large draw. A 1000W space heater for example would only be able to be plugged in for 2 hours before it drains the 1996 Wh battery. Backup power goes really quickly when used for heat. It's usually more applicable to non heat related loads, since electrical heating is so energy inefficient.

Thank you for your answer. I obviously need to do a lot more research, before I make any purchases. By the way. I just stumbled onto your channel yesterday and have to say it has been a real eye opener for me. I have gardened or had house plants for years, but I am just beginning to learn about permaculture. I have been enjoying binge watching your videos and sure I will have to refer back to several of them, when the time comes that I am actually able to begin planting my own food forest, at my new location. @CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 9 ай бұрын
Exactly correct. This would help tremendously. The only concern I would have is that this size unit weighs about 40 lbs. If that is okay for you to carry and move, then good, if not, you may want to go smaller. Check out the spec plate on stuff like your freezer to know what power (watts) it draws, and understand that starting current spikes higher, so you want some wiggle room. I would say go no smaller than 1200W system.

Would this run a small air fryer, microwave, or small toaster oven?
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 10 ай бұрын
It depends on the appliance, but I haven't seen one that 2000W wouldn't run. Check the nameplate wattage and double check though. Microwaves are about 50W, Toasters are around 800W, maybe 1200 or so for a larger one. Air frier would be the closest to the limit, but most are about 1200-1500W.

Can it be charging while drawing off of it? A short fall of other products I've tried
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 4 ай бұрын
It can be. However, keep in mind that there are losses with each stage of: - Converting solar irradiance into DC electricity - Storing the DC current into a chemical battery - Discharging the DC battery into a DC load - Converting DC current to an AC wave form, to be discharged into an AC load. So yes, you can charge the battery while you use the stored energy in the battery, but it's not like it's a 1:1 exchange. There are losses along the way, due to the laws of physics.

I notice that this manufacturer has units with more wattage. When should a person consider getting something bigger? I wouldn’t use it for camping but would at my home for a power outage. Is it just about how much power you would use at one time or do the bigger wattage also store more battery life?
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 9 ай бұрын
Generally both, but not necessarily. The wattage is often linked to the wiring or resistors used in the design, and their max current, based on their physical characteristics, for wires, fhe gauge. The battery size is in Wh. It can be big or small. You could have a low Watt system with a high watt hour battery, it's totally possible. However, in general, if a system has options on wattage, then the battery Wh will also tend to scale up. Sorry if this is all stuff you know, I don't know how much you know about electrical. So in general, yes, absolutely higher power (watts) will mean you can run more things at once, and also run larger things. It also MIGHT mean it will have a larger battery (Wh), but definitely double check the specs to verify.

I have been wondering about how to use these. Can you leave it plugged in all the time, or do you have to keep unplugging it and then recharging it periodically? (How long will it hold its charge when it's inactive?)
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 9 ай бұрын
You can leave it plugged in, it will Trickle charge off the solar or wall outlet. The duration of charge holding depends on temperature and age, and cycles of charge recharge. Modern batteries do really well for this. Li-ion batteries lose about 1-2% charge per month, increasing at very hot or very cold temps.
