Hi LennyB, thank you for the very informative video as always! Is there a specific reason you use SoftTube's saturation before EQ? I would've thought that by putting the saturation before you make specifically troubling frequencies more difficult to "surgically" deal with in EQ, as you did in this example. I'd love to know your insight. Thank you!
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Markux, that's a great point! I'll use saturation first if the audio is good (or great) to begin with. However, If the recording has lots of EQ issues, it would probably be a good idea to address those with an EQ before adding saturation. Or just re-recording the track. The truth is that I'd say there's not really a wrong answer. I'd let my ears mostly make the decision on something like this. If it sounds better one way, then it's a good choice. Thanks for watching!

Hi Lenny, What are the benefits of using a channel strip vs just using a great audio interface and mic? All the top voice over talent seem to have channel strips, but others claim it's overkill. Can you please clarify? Thank you.
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Жыл бұрын
Hi, that's a great question. When you need a fast way to get an excellent live voice-over or streaming sound without plugins, you might reach for a channel strip. However, it's also important to note that channel strips assume that your recording space (the room you're recording in) is definitely professionally treated. But, If you are looking for more detailed control over your voice-over sound, using a direct line to an interface with post-processing and plugins is a better choice in my opinion (not implying that this will correct any room treatment deficiencies). That's where my custom presets are useful. Also, I don't suggest using channel strip processing and plugins simultaneously for voice over.

I love this Lenny! I am on Garageband (using the Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mic and the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) I have been picking up small internet ad voice over jobs about $200 - $300 gigs since 2018... working from within my walk-in closet. QUESTION: Does Logic Pro come with plugins like Garageband? - - I would hate to invest in Logic Pro, and still have to buy more plugins, when Garageband is already "keeping money coming into my pocket."
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Roy, you can look at all of the features for Logic on the apple website. I'm pretty sure the effects are much different. (It's been a while since I've used Garageband). Also, unless you need specific 3rd party plugins, Logic has everything you need. I'm using 3rd party plugins in this video because some clients are open to it. But, if you wanted to stay with all Logic plugins you could. As a matter of fact, one of the next videos I'm planning to do would be a full channel strip with only Logic stock plugins. So, the answer is no. If you purchase Logic you don't need additional plugins. Have you considered submitting your voice? It would be cool to process your voice with only Logic for a video. Let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for reaching out!!!!

After processing , do you put anything on the master bus
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 9 ай бұрын
Hey @mookeymontana, thanks for reaching out. I might put something on the master buss (like EQ or compression) only if I'm mixing the voice with something else like a music bed on another track. I sometimes use light (2:1) slower attack/release compression make the sound of the two tracks blend better. However, I do use a mastering type process. Check out these videos for more on how I master voice-over. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfQqGRrYrZqmdU kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHKlcpmIo9OirtE kzbin.info/www/bejne/oam8mJt9bdRrrLs

Is there an inexpensive option to add saturation in hardware instead of plugins? I already have a dBx 286s. I'm pleased with it, but would like to add saturation...
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 5 ай бұрын
Hey @brianjurkowski. The best way to achieve adding saturation with hardware is probably going to be with a preamp. However, those types of preamps tend to get expensive. You might consider something like this Pre-73 www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Pre73Premier--golden-age-project-pre-73-premier-microphone-preamp

hello Lenny, congratulations for your video tutorials, I would like to ask you the Softube, do you insert it as the first in the effects chain? Softube, Eq, channel Strip and Compressor
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Жыл бұрын
Hi Photoshop in 100 Secondi. I usually put it first. However you might try it in different parts of the chain. It will sound slightly different in different positions. The right answer is what sounds best. If the voice needs lots of EQ to fix the sounds, I might put it after the (first) EQ. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Very nice! I have that mic - Would you happen to have a video on how to processed a TLM 103 for VO?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 2 жыл бұрын
David, I really can't process a specific microphone. Rather, it's the microphone, the room your recording in, and the voice together that create the voice-over sound. That is what I process. If any one of those three things are changed, the processing to make it sound good would have to change too. Send me a sample of your voice and will send you an example of what it can sound like. You can upload a file at www.lennyb.com.

In my opinion, If you are recording and editing before posting, you'd benefit from the Focusrite Solo. If you are planning to stream live and need a processed sound, then it's better to choose the Apollo. That's based on the limited information I have about your setup and production intent.
