Triggers are great. It can be used like re-amping guitars and such. You can record a MIDI performance of a live drummer, and then go back and change the sounds. You can add electronic drums to your acoustic kit without having an electric kit or creating a hybrid. It's a win/win.

My problem with triggers isn't that they are cheating, but that many drummers produce a ultra precise but ultra boring drum sound with them. They kill all the dynamics and take all the bass out of their bass drum. I like a more natural sound.
@coldfleshcolony
@coldfleshcolony 8 жыл бұрын
+DoomTobi That has bothered me too. Using triggers during recording should give endless options of great drums yet loads of albums have the same generic sound. Then again there were trends in sound way before triggers became standard practice.
@thenotsoguitarguy9429
@thenotsoguitarguy9429 6 жыл бұрын
My problem with triggers is that it is cheating, but not necessarily for the drummer. It's cheating for the engineer. A big part of what you're paying a recording engineer for is getting the drum sounds right. It takes years to do that. You gotta know how your room works. You gotta know how drums sound in your room. You gotta know how to tune drums for your room (because an astounding number of drummers don't know how). You gotta know about mic placement. You gotta know about phase relationships. You gotta know how to deal with bleed. Or you can use triggers and Toontracks and replace all your bad work. This stuff is great for the guy recording at home. It pisses me off, however, when I walk into a studio I'm paying for and the dude pulls out a bunch of triggers for the drums. Take some pride in your work, for fuck sake. The editing is where the cheating for the drummer comes in.
@Cenot4ph
@Cenot4ph 6 жыл бұрын
yea it makes it sound too digital and monotonous. You need to hear the analog essence of the instrument, it sounds different depending on how you hit the material and triggers dont really transfer any of that.

OR just make the clicks not so loud. just to make it cut through better. Like in dubstep. Lots of low end. But also high end so it cuts through
@timbrown57
@timbrown57 5 жыл бұрын
That's not the actual trigger doing that, that is the DRUMMER's fault for selecting a shitty overly "clicky" drum sound. If you are triggering, go listen to the country song "Kentucky Mine" by Diamond Rio. I picked this song because it isn't a metal song, but it has a great kick sound that cuts through, and will sit well in the mix . You get a thump and a mallet slap without the obnoxious "click", and by the way - Stryper was using that clicky kick sound in like 1986. Think outside of the clicky kick box.

I understand the concept and use of triggers, but I have a question though. What's the point of buying a hell of a good sounding drumset if you're gonna use triggers?
@ErikLMX
@ErikLMX 5 жыл бұрын
You could combine the acoustic sound and the triggered samples together. It's useful in some cases. For example, check out the live performance video of the song "Drunk" by Sungazer. The drummer has triggers on the kick, snare and floor tom, to play 808 sounds along with the drums.

Hilarious video! Although on why some people think triggering is cheating: its to do with the threshold and dynamics settings. Watch the drum cams of Inferno from Behemoth and you'll see he plays with no power whatsoever. If a microphone was placed in front of the drum you wouldn't be able to hear his kick at all. Some people keep the threshold settings super low but the dynamics at maximum so that they could hit the drum with a feather and you could still be able to hear powerful kick sound. Personally I have no problem with them but thats what I've heard.

While you have to hit every note to get the trigger sound, you can hit it at any strength, which can cause some problems. If you are playing with triggers all the time, it can make you play weaker and weaker because the trigger react to any touch of the drum. So if you are playing "trigger mode" on drums without triggers, it's going to sound weak and dull, at least if you're going 230bpm on double kick, for example. Point is, that triggers can teach players to be lazy with the strength of each stroke and completely destroy a players dynamic.

Sooo... before this video I didn't think triggers were cheating per se, I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but after watching this "proper" explanation I definitely think they're at least stripping the dynamics out of playing the kit, I can do blazing fast double bass if I don't have to worry about making the sound even, that's 10x easier. and the same for a fast snare roll, if I could have that lumpy and random note values then I could play it much faster.
@ozarmidrashim6029
@ozarmidrashim6029 8 жыл бұрын
Most of people who think it's cheating never actually owned triggers, don't understand how they work, and are afraid to try them out because of their false misconceptions. The triggers do equalize all the inconsistencies to an extent, but they won't make a sloppy player sound great or magically make him super drummer, if you suck, you suck, and you should stay away from triggers, because by using them everybody is going to hear every mistake you make. The thing you are missing is that all modules have the sensitivity settings. You have to set the sensitivity according to you, and that kind of sittings don't allow you to play soft and fast, and sound like you are hitting the drum with full strength. Why? You see setting the triggers to be very sensitive sure allows you to hit the drum very softly and sound like you are beating that drum, but as soon as you start hitting that drum a little harder, the triggers are going to start to misfire, meaning for example you hit the drum once and you hear it like you hit it twice. (Not to mention the triggers would pick up any kind of vibration caused by a bass playing or you accidentally hitting the drum with your leg) Now you might think: "So you are telling me I could set it to hit it once and hear 4 or 3000 hits? That is so much easier than actually hitting every note" Well, you would be wrong there because you can't really control the amount of misfired hits it's going to make, and when are triggers going to make them. The other thing is if you set the triggers sensitivity to be low, they won't misfire, but also when you hit the drum softly by accident or whatever, you won't hear a thing. It may sound like you have a lot of room in which you are allowed to be inconsistent, but there really isn't, once you start playing around with those settings, you would see that, even moving sensitivity one number up or down( on my module it went from 0 to 100), it's going to make a huge difference.

This is a useful video for explaining the basics of triggering, but it didn't answer in anyway the complaints people have about triggers. The reason people complain about triggers is that, no matter what your dynamic level is, the trigger plays the same note/beat. Therefore, you can tap the head with the beater very lightly and still get the same note as if you hit it with every bit of strength you have. There in allowing light notes being played very quickly, without any real control or sophistication. For the record, its only playing when the beater comes all the way back for every note otherwise you just have a very fast nervous twitch.

It's very simple for me, if there are 2 drummers playing a really complex piece of music, one can only play it using triggers while the other doesn't need it, I will consider the one who doesn't need triggers a better drummer. Not musician, songwriter, but a better natural drummer. I don't think it's cheating as such always, but it has so much potential to be used as a cheat that it will always have that cloud of 'what if he's programmed it to cheat' for me.

This was an awesome video explanation. I don't play drums but I have heard of them via bands like Fear Factory. Much love

You can do it by editing the midi track recorded, and change the note value to the corresponding drum element you need. That is pretty easy once you start to dig into how to use DAW softwares.

Well, okay. :D Love that video. You know, I also kinda like the fact that you've got that tom in there as a snare. Shows off the point quite nicely.

I've watched this video 6 or 7 times now and I still find it funny, and I don't even play metal, I only use a trigger to ''mic'' my kick during rehearsals to avoid any feedback and have it as loud as we want.
