The Bible is God's Word. But what should be the criteria for interpreting it correctly?
Matt Swaim talks to Dr. Vern Steiner, who was a Protestant pastor, seminary professor and Biblical scholar, about the value of his Protestant formation in Scripture, as well as its limits, and what led him to enter the Catholic Church and create a Catholic Bible Institute to continue his work in exegesis and Biblical scholarship.

I was a protestant most of my life and took my scriptural study very seriously. I was a calvinist for the majority of it even though i didnt completely understand the theology. Over the 10 years i believed it, i felt like no church had truly figured out the marriage between scripture and doctrine but Calvin was probably the closest. Still there were several problems i had with Calvinism to the point where i dropped one of the 5 points.... i couldnt stop thinking about how that point affected the other's.... eventually i lost another one. I became obsessed with finding the true church after that and was shocked to discover carholicism is by far the most biblical. I got confirmed this easter amen. Ill never leave i love being in the church. Never felt so sure and thats the truth.

This is a great story. I am not a Cradle Catholic but a late comer baptised Anglican and in my late 20's started going to Catholic Mass and visited lots ofHistoric Catholic Churches on vacations and Shrines when I travelled, which must have been guided by the Holy Spirit. I even was visiting a Methodist friends Church but was guided to a Mass first I feel by god. I say for any none Catholics go to a Mass pray a Catholic Prayer, pray Rosary and listen to these discussions. Read this gentlemans books and get a Catholic Bible and Catechism

As a Catholic, I learned that the most important for Jesus and our Father is to be a good person, make God happy, to love God number 1, and your neighbors as yourself. That is already a lot of sacrifice and humility. So our purpose really is to serve others, the sick, the hungry, the one with no shelter, etc. because when we love our brothers and others, we are returning Our Father’s love.

How do you "make God happy"? Do you think God is monitoring your every move? Are you that important? I don't think God cares personally. In my long-ish life I've had a few paranormal experiences, ghosts, poltergeists, aliens. Quite a high score really. But I'm not holy. Neither am l a sinner. Just an ordinary person. Lots of people like to think they communicate with God. Well, if it helps, why not? Me? I'm too cynical.

@@sammygomes7381 Something you need to know ,the most historically proven miracles on record are in the Catholic church ,if one truly lives their Catholic faith there is nothing that they can not accomiplish because God has placed all the means of grace in the Church . To be specific no one can be saved without the church , atleast you need the Protestant "church". Jesus decreed I will build my church , now a church is not just a single man with feelings about Jesus , you see even after Saul encountering Jesus on the road to Damascus , the Lord Jesus did not tell Saul ,rise up your now having a personal relationship with me enjoy the grace ,let us see what he said to him: Don't forget this was a physical encounter with the risen Lord Jesus not the feel good sensation we see nowdays after saying some" sinners prayer"Acts 9:3-6,8-12,17-18 [3]As Saul was coming near the city of Damascus, suddenly a light from the sky flashed round him. [4]He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute me?” [5]“Who are you, Lord?” he asked. “I am Jesus, whom you persecute,” the voice said. [6]“But get up and go into the city, where you will be told what you must do.” [8]Saul got up from the ground and opened his eyes, but could not see a thing. So they took him by the hand and led him into Damascus. [9]For three days he was not able to see, and during that time he did not eat or drink anything. [10]There was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. He had a vision, in which the Lord said to him, “Ananias!”“Here I am, Lord,” he answered. [11]The Lord said to him, “Get ready and go to Straight Street, and at the house of Judas ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying, [12]and in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come in and place his hands on him so that he might see again.” [17]So Ananias went, entered the house where Saul was, and placed his hands on him. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord has sent me - Jesus himself, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here. He sent me so that you might see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” [18]At once something like fish scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he was able to see again. He stood up and was baptized;( Do these things make sense, THERE ARE VERY MANY WHO THINK THEY ARE SAVED ,BUT ON THE REAL DAY THEY WILL BE SHOCKED ,THAT THEY WERE SIMPLY HAVING FEELINGS)

@@balukuroben7458 We are saved by grace through faith. Grace comes from God, not the church. There is no doubt in my mind that the Catholic church has the biggest list of miracles ever but knowing the history of the Catholic church I doubt their truth. I fail to see what Paul had to do with Miricale's of the Catholic church, if in fact that was the point you were trying to make, as that was from God. There is no doubt in my mind that many call themselves Christians or Catholic will miss the boat as the word of God is clear on that. That is why one should always be ready as Christ told us know one knows the day or time Christ will be returning at the rapture, not even Christ. Many blessings and a good evening.

@@sammygomes7381 Yes we are saved by grace ,but that grace is only experienced trough the church , one Must encounter the grace through the church , not as a stand alone somewhere in the street , you seem to say one can be saved without the church . The church is the ark of salvation ,simple .John 17:20-21 [20]“I pray not only for them, but also for those who believe in me because of their message. [21]I pray that they may all be one. Father! May they be in us, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me. Matthew 28:19-20 [19]Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, [20]and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” ( This is the church , you have not been able to demonstrate that one can have faith without the church ,one can be saved outside the church ,one can experience grace outside the church ) Finally as I close : Matthew 16:3,18-19 [3]And early in the morning you say, ‘It is going to rain, because the sky is red and dark.’ You can predict the weather by looking at the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs concerning these times! [18]And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. [19]I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” John 20:21-23 [21]Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” [22]Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. [23]If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” ( That is the church )

@@sammygomes7381 Yes, that is the question. It's a well known fact that, for anyone paying attention enough to the messages on a video that is slanted toward one faith, there is a small percentage of people who post messages, in one form or another, stating an opposite opinion with some people posting in a way that it seems they are really interested in learning about what they don't really agree with when in fact they are just there to try to goad people in and convince people to their way of understanding the topic(s) under discussion. With this in mind, your replies to Johnny G: "If they needed to know Koine Greek they all flunk because the Greek does not say Mary was full of grace, it says she was favored with grace," and "It's the Catholic church that has changed her role and does matter with salvation when one worships Mary" seem more like a person interested in criticizing than an actual openness to learning. @@sammygomes7381 You are equating "salvation" with making a choice, as if the heart of the Gospel is a fundamentalist altar call. That may be the 'tradition' you grew up in, but it doesn't make it the faith Jesus Christ founded. Catholics are "saved". Why? Because Jesus Christ became Incarnate as a human being, lived a sinless life, dies a Paschal death, and most importantly, rose again from the dead and ascended into heaven. Our "salvation" isn't so much our 'choice' (which was the unbalanced teaching of Pelagius) as it is CHRIST'S FINISHED WORK. To be sure, we are meant, personally, to participate in Christ's finished work, but even that is something that comes to us from without, through the Church. Jesus said we are 'born from ABOVE' (and actually corrects Nicodemus when he mistranslates the word Christ uses as 'again': 'how can a man climb back into his mother's word and be born a second time' / again). That birth comes 'from above' FROM God THROUGH the Church in our baptism as both Jesus (cf. John 3: 3-5) and Sts. Peter (Acts 2: 38-39 & I Peter 3: 18-22) and Paul taught (Romans 6: 2-6; Col. 2: 9-15; Titus 3: 4-8, not to mention I Cor. 3: 8, 16 & I Cor. 6: 19). Pope Leo the Great famously said, "What was visible in our Savior, has passed over into His mysteries" (meaning the sacraments of the Church). This is the constant teaching of Jesus Christ, His Apostles, and the saints of the Church.

I am amazed by the learning of most Protestant Pastors and their extensive knowledge of the Bible, however I wonder how they seem to ignore the actual political history of the 16 and 17 centuries. The ruling classes IE. The Monarchs and Aristocracy actually stole the religion of the common people plus the wealth of the church, all for their own greed and aggrandisement. And boy did they succeed.😅The Tudors in England and the Princelings in Germany have a great sin to answer for. @QuisutDeusmpc
@QuisutDeusmpc Жыл бұрын
@@anthonythistle1465 I think you don't understand what the word 'catholic' means. You contrast it with 'Jewish' as if catholic is an ethnic, factional term. In reality it comes from two Greek words which are in the sacred Scriptures: 'kata holos'. In Greek, 'kata' literally means 'according to', and 'holos' literally means 'the whole'. So, 'kata holos' (in Greek) or 'catholic' (in its English transliteration) means 'according to the whole' or 'universal'. It is found throughout the NT. In the Gospels, although Jesus states His primary ministry is to the 'lost sheep of Israel', we find Him preaching in Galilee of "the Gentiles" and in the Decapolis (the 'ten cities' which were primarily a Gentile dominated area). In addition, when the first Gentiles come to Christ, seeking Him, He announces that "the time" has arrived. In the Epistles, St. Paul states Jesus Christ "breaks down the dividing wall" that divides Hebrews from non-Jewish Gentiles, making of both "one": "there is no longer Jew nor Greek" over and over. And doesn't Jesus Christ pray to the Father, on the night of His betrayal and crucifixion, in His high priestly prayer: "that they may ALL be ONE". The NT 'ekklesia' (assembly / Church) isn't to be a demographically primarily Jewish community, but a UNIVERSAL one of BOTH Jew AND Gentile. In other words, 'according to the whole' of the human race, or 'universal. In other words, 'catholic'.

A section of the NT that is often passed over for its deeper meanings is Acts 8:27 to 35. We find a eunuch reading Scripture. Obeying “the Spirit,” Philip, runs up and hears him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asks, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And the eunuch answers, “How could I, unless someone guides me?” “Please tell me,” he asks Philip, “of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of someone else?” The Apostle, a bishop and rightful interpreter of Holy Writ, acts as the magisterium in providing a right construal.

The whole Roman Catholic structure is based on three false presuppositions concerning Peter: 1. That the text of Matthew 16:16-20 means that Peter was the foundation of the Church; that the Church was built on him; 2. That Peter went to Rome and was the first bishop in Rome; 3. That Peter's successors are the bishops of Rome under the primacy of the Pope. (It is worth mentioning here, that the list of Popes concocted by Rome is a fable. In its humble beginning, the church at Rome was guided by a plurality of elders, and not one single bishop. Then throughout its latter history, as two, even three, concurrent Popes vied for the throne, intrigue and deceit crowned the victor.) There were no popes for several hundred years.

They do…but however, they all are in different denominations and many disagree with each other. But yes we had powerful holy men of God we looked up to and gleaned from many who performed miracles, healings and wonders too. We didn’t also call them Saints either. They would just call them “Great men of God” or “God’s Generals”. Lol. But they don’t have a consensus or magisterium to agree theologically, we just glean from their great faith and love of God, holiness, and power of God in their lives. But yes, essentially we were still left to our own understandings Bcz of this (though many do also follow their doctrines and theology). We also didn’t pray to them or venerate them.

The Bible says "all Scripture is useful ..." not ONLY Scripture is useful." But Protestants consistently argue back and are blind to their error of logic. This is proof that only God can give the grace to open their eyes.

"The church was not a role model, there was corruption, there was worldliness, there was greed, and lust for power." Pope Francis on Martin Luther and the reformation. This does not mention the doctrines of the Catholic church that are not biblical, such as a priest or a pope cannot forgive sin, penitential canons are only imposed on the living, purgatory doesn't exist, buying your way to forgiveness through indulgences, the repeated crucifixion of the Christ of God through the false doctrine of transubstantiation, the rock on which Christ builds his church is the revelation that He is God and not a false papal lineage and the list goes on and on. There are simply too many doctrines within the Catholic church that cannot be reconciled to the living Word of God which dwells in the true church which is those who have received the Holy Spirit given us by our Lord and Saviour.

A lot of Catholics as children are taught the faith, but like everything, kids don't understand the faith, therefore they leave and deride the Church. As an adult, you should relook at the church and study it deeply. Dogmas are set from the teachings of Christ handed down to the apostles and the early church. As for sinners, then you are delusional. We are all sinners ,but we all strive to lead a good life and still fall short most day. 🤣🤣. The Bible rose from the Church which rose from the. apostles inspired by the Holy Spirit sent by Jesus at Pentecost….not 1500 years later by a disgruntled monk who took it on himself to remove books of scripture he disagreed with. To say different is to say Jesus was mistaken in how and what he taught the Apostles. And now, with literally THOUSANDS of Protestant churches, who ALL hold different beliefs about Jesus and different interpretations of the same scriptures, this man DOES know of what he speaks. Read Acts again, and the early Church Fathers…especially in regard to Eucharist as the New Covenant. And learn what the Catholic Church actually believes and teaches. Otherwise, you just sound ignorant. That way if you still object to what the Church teaches, you can at least sound intelligent arguing for another belief. Our core beliefs are: Christ has died, Christ IS RISEN, Christ will come again. Are you objecting to what the Catholic Church believes and teaches, or what you’ve been (erroneously) taught that Catholics believe? LEARN FIRST. Then talk. Unless you just wanna argue. God Bless.
