This situation reminds me when my Psychologist referred me to a new doctor. It made me feel abandoned and hurt right when my recovery was in a very traumatic place. When I got upset he sat me down and explained he could no longer bc impartial and see me objectively and that he got too close to me and that it was his fault and he apologized and even tho he doesn’t treat me anymore he checks in on me once in a while to make sure I’m okay. Best doctor I ever had and that little extra of the calls a few time a year made my transition possible and smooth

Poor guy. Just wants love. However, the doctor should have been more clear about boundaries throughout treatment.

Definitely the boundaries should be made as the very start of the therapy relationship and visited maintained throughout

i get that iggy is in such a hard situation but i really don’t love how he told chance about seeing a new therapist. any trained (or in my case currently training) counselor would know that the way he worded it and not having a full sit down conversation explaining WHY chance needed to see someone new means that chance will now take this as a personal rejection and i KNOW being rejected by a THERAPIST would be the ultimate betrayal.

I have been on both sides (being a volunteer for youth in the city in Iggy's side), and this is honestly such a hard thing to re-enforce. We often get so wrapped up in the positivity of progress from both a patient and provider side that we often have boundaries come apart because there is a sense that progress = trust. In the doc's case, he forgot that the patient was still not connected with his own identity enough to have that purpose be linked to himself... and not to impress the doc. I also get where the doc is coming from. It's super hard to keep those walls up... and to have to say no because this often happens to people who are like Chance. Chance unintentionally manipulated Iggy to believe that his actions were for himself, and it's tough to make that disconnection and reconnect to the self. :(

I agree. I worked at a hospital for almost 10 years until the onset of the pandemic, and I would often counsel young kids and teens dealing with addictions and other issues. We had a teenage girl once who became very overly attached to one of our other counselors to the point where our in-house psychiatrist and social workers had to become involved just to sternly remind her of the boundaries that had already been set. Luckily, she seemed to get the message and she's now doing quite well for herself from what I've been told.

i’m getting my masters in counseling and these are the situations i’m terrified of. truthfully this doesn’t strike me as a friendship so much as chance viewing iggy as a mentor and wanting to thank him for everything he’s done. it does make the line blurry but it makes sense

That really wasn't the best way to tell him. He could have been a lot more empathetic and say something along the lines "I understand how hard it must be to not have a family and I am sure you will find one. You've come such a long way. Unfortunately, I am sure therapist and it would be unethical to be friends with you. I wouldn't be able to help you anymore. This is not personal. I appreciate you, bit of would be unprofessional and I would risk harming you." He might even have asked him to sit down when telling him. Or wait until a regular session (or schedule one) and take the time to help the guy figure out how he can find love. I really felt the pain and rejection when he told him.

This has to be so hard, ive been on the patients side of it, but seeing iggys side, the pain and struggle it must causing knowing that now, he is one of the people telling him no, after speding so long of giving him "yes"'s and working through all this trauma with that person to now be apart of the "bad guys", its gotta be just as hard🥺

Nope. doctor patient confidentiality and power imbalance. It'd be different if they both were seeing a therapist bc one is the therapist one has more knowledge of the other, than the other has of him.

They can.....eventually. most ethics guidelines give about 2 years minimum before you're in the clear to engage in a personal relationship. Obviously depending on the place and position. But a professional cant just drop a client one day in order the be their friend the next, no.

For the ones calling him ‘aww poor guy’ , the guy actually k!lled his family knowingly as they did nothing with his abus!ve father. The guy ends up holding Iggy hostage when Iggy gets a restraining order against him as the guy was actually beyond therapy. Some people cannot be saved.
