My mom says this reminds her of shopping at public markets in England in the 1970's...I was just a tiny tike back then, but I remember the strong fish smell. Do they still have markets like that in England? Markets like this must have been common back in the day in the USA, but now you have to go to an International grocery in the USA to find a distant equivalent to this experience...it seems like grocery stores are 40% food and 60% packaging in the US. And there are definitely those polished options here in Mexico, chain grocery stores and Walmarts; it's hard to beat the convenience of shopping those locales, but it's not nearly as interesting as a public market.

My mom still makes a face at the memory of that fish smell...I remember buying comic books when I lived in Bicester...they were thin, and kinda like newspapers, if I remember correctly

This reminds me of the old Pensaukin Mart in NJ. The Berlin Farmer's Market is a distant second. Then there is Ninth and Christian in Philly. This place is amazing.

I help my daughter with taking care of her chickens, ducks, quail. rabbits, and turkey and also after she kills them, and I help her. Fresh liver is way better and the other parts also. My son-in-law and granddaughter hunt for deer also. Thanks for sharing.
@SlowpokeTravel5 жыл бұрын
Fresh liver is so hard to find in US supermarkets...definitely not an ingredient many folks shop for anymore--but plenty of fresh liver at the Mercado Independencia! I haven't eaten much game in recent years, but in my youth I ate quite a bit while living and working in Wyoming...I'm not a hunter, but my old boss was, and he'd stock his freezer with antelope, elk, and moose from his hunts and that's what he would use to feed his employees before and after the summer work seasons.

this market was definitely a labyrinth...lots of ways in, but lots of ways out, too...it definitely took some getting used to, and finding the same spot twice was a challenge at first, but we got the layout down pretty well after a couple of trips to the market.

This is such a great video! Do you speak Spanish Chef Buck? Have you been to a restaurant where you have to pickup raw food from the market and the restaurant would cook it?

Thanks!--My Spanish is in it's infancy...I'm working at it, but I'm a long way off from conversational Spanish...and I haven't been to that kind of restaurant, if I have to bring the food, then I'll cook it! :^)

the closest i've ever come to a market like that was in hawaii...it was a GREAT experience at the local and asian markets there...it sounds like you may need to invest in some horse blinders if you do ever get the hankerin' to eat there...me...i wouldn't have a problem with it...my pet pig was with us one day and on our table the next...LOL!!! LOVE THE VID!!! :D
@SlowpokeTravel5 жыл бұрын
Thanks...I go to international markets in the US whenever I can, it's always a more interesting way to shop and the prices usually can't be beat. The Asian markets in Seattle were one of my favorite things about the city. The markets here in Mexico are great fun to explore...I loved this market in Morelia, although we never ended up plopping down and grabbing a bite in "meat alley" as I always thought of it. The closest we came to dining at this market was a seafood restaurant around the corner--no heads in sight!--that just seemed a little too much like Lord of the Flies for me!

I'm using an Iconnetechs 4k action cam, which is a cheaper Gopro knockoff...I've had it for a couple of years, but haven't used it too often. It's definitely noticeable when using, but not nearly as noticeable as the white, furry windscreen for my lapel mic. The sound recording on the action cam isn't useable, so I record with and H1 Zoom and a lapel mic.

@SlowpokeTravel5 жыл бұрын
Sweet treats, for sure...we've eaten great food cooked at the markets, although we didn't sample any dishes at the Mercado Independencia. We ate several times at the Mercado San Juan de Dios. They had a similar butcher meat market area there, but they also had a large area to eat that wasn't right in the middle of meat the processing, which made my salivary glands work a little better

I have shopped at Markets in Mexico .I don't Haggle .I don't really think you can haggle at Markets ,they have set prices .I think Haggle more less with street vendors who sell Miscellaneous things .Not food vendors . I've never understood why Westerners would take the trouble and pay the expense to travel to a foreign country only to eat at a McDonald's, shop at an American-style mall. It's true that there might be some issues of food safety and cleanliness but these days with the internet you can easily get good advice to get a more authentic experience and eat at local establishments without getting sick. I don't think you haggle/bargain for basic food stuff but I see that there are stalls that sell non-food items like T-shirts, etc -- I think those you can haggle is you think the vendor is over-charging because you're a foreigner.
