After going through conversion therapy, marrying a woman and having children, Pip came out as gay. He’s now an Anglican priest who’s breaking new ground with queer-focused services at his church. #CBCShortDocs #Devout+Out

Pip grew up in a conservative evangelical Christian community. From an early age, he knew he was gay. But as a pastor’s son, Pip believed that there would be great consequences for being queer - in this life and the next.
In the early 2000s, teenage Pip was placed in “reparative therapy” (sometimes referred to as “praying the gay away”). It didn’t work. In his early 20s, still struggling with failed conversation therapy, Pip chose to marry his best friend Kris (a woman) in an attempt to “fix” himself. After the birth of their second child, Pip found himself depressed and living life in an alcohol-fuelled blur.
Pip and Kris decided to divorce, but continued to live and raise their family together. When Pip came out as queer, he was asked to leave his church. He and Kris were also kicked out of their evangelical community. They lost many friends, Pip’s mental health spiralled, and Kris struggled to care for both Pip and their children.
But this was not the end of their journey.
Eventually, Pip returned to school to study in the Anglican tradition, a denomination with a growing number of progressive parishioners and clergy members. A few years later, Pip met Alex, a young filmmaker with no religious background, and they fell in love. Now, Pip, Alex and Kris all live together as one family: three parents, all playing equal roles, and two children.
In terms of his religious life, Pip found a new community when he became a priest in an Anglican parish. His sexuality, partnership and family are welcomed. Pip is breaking new ground by curating queer-focused events and services, like inviting drag queens and other LGBTQ activists to perform and take part in the church.
During the 2016 Synod election campaign, Pip advocated to allow same-sex couples to marry in the Anglican Church of Canada. He and Alex created advocacy videos that showcased queer Anglican families faithfully living their truth. To their delight, the vote passed. Pip and Alex were able to marry at their home parish, with Kris as their “brosmaid” and the full support of their community.

This documentary changed my life. I am a 16 year old and was previously a catholic. I was struggling finding acceptance in the church being gay. When I discovered the Anglican Church through this documentary, which is very similar to Catholicism with the exception of it being affirming of lgbt rights, I felt something shift. I finally found acceptance with my Christian Faith and coexisting with my sexuality. When I turn 18 in 2021 I plan on fully converting to Anglicanism. Thank you Pip for changing my life, your story helped me finally be at peace

Please if you are serious about it, I encourage you to go to confession and learn what the church really teaches about homosexuality. You may have a misunderstanding o what the human is and how the church is involved with the salvation of souls. Know that you are called to be a saint, that is more than our natural state. You cannot ignore that the catholic church is the only church our Lord founded, be serious on your discernment. I am praying for you!

God makes us, guides us and loves us! Being Christian and being Gay is totally compatible. Listen to the words and love of Jesus, not the interpretations of men and if need be find the right congregation that accepts you for you. Don’t let others guilt you or bring you down, live in love and peace.

I hope you reconsider your conversion and your faith. Believe in God because God exists. Believing in God because it fits conveniently with who you want to have sex with is an illegitimate reason for faith. It's no different than sales people who join a church so they can try to turn the congregation into customers. It's unethical. If God exists then God exists and if God does not exist then God does not exist. God's existence does not depend on your sexuality. Please don't deceive honest believers into thinking you're a brother Christian who has genuine faith when your faith actually rests on who you're sexually attracted to

Pip's description of his efforts to change his orientation through prayer and Bible reading sends chills down my spine - that was my path too, and I remember wondering why everyone else were heterosexual for free while, for some reason, something was wrong with me. My honest opinion as a christian guy dealing with same sex attraction . He should have not married. but I do understand the circumstances he was in making that decision. In the end we all as human beings should take accountability for our own decisions, because GOD is the only one able to judge us as believers. My fullness of my identity is not for me nor humans to deside what I am... it is only God who can do that. And God says (Romans 8:17) we are sons and daughters we are heirs of the Kingdom of God. My sexual orientation is NOT my identity, my true identity is far beyond that. And for the sake of a healthy fear of God I choose to live a celebate life, because it honours the word of God, it honours my fellow believers and it honours my body which is the temple of God. This is a personal decision formed by my own experience, not forced by any religion or peer pressure. All I hope is that all believers find peace , hope , freedom and Love in Christ.

Why do you use Catholic symbols, ie., statues, rosaries, etc., when you are obviously not Catholic much less a Catholic priest? Any genuine message which this story tried to convey was swept away by these false pretenses. Which leaves one major conclusion to the storyline. That is, “Catholicism is bad, retrograde and does not accept “us”. Whomever that “us” may be. This story seems to be just another jab at Catholicism. Furthermore, regarding a statement made by the reverend. Something to the effect that the church should celebrate people. The Christian Church is not about celebrating people it is about worshipping God.

I'm a non-believer who, as a boy, sang in a church choir but can't remember ever believing that there was a God, especially given the terrible things that were being done in his name and despite him supposedly looking over and out for everyone. If so, why do so many in the world suffer incredible misfortunes and mistreatment. The teachings of 'God' in all faiths is based on love, forgiveness, understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion. The problem is that those people responsible for the formation and oversight of the various religious 'organisations' base their beliefs, not on the 'word of God' but on their personal prejudices and this is reflected in the uncompromising attitudes of these religions. They cast out those who do not fit their idea of what is their interpretation of their 'God's word'. After all, religious books which tell you how to behave and think were written predominently by men based on their prejudices and experiences. If you believe in God, love your life as you believe your God would want for you and not as others interpret what you are meant to do.

Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men". We all go through difficult circumstances in life in one way or another but embracing our sin is the opposite of what God wants for us. If you read the interpretations from the Catholic Bishops or Orthodox Bishops ( those with authority from Christ to interpret these passages), you will see that this refers to either a rebuke of a specific case in the Ephesian church and the establishment of proper conduct. Men are to conduct themselves with honesty and without judgement. Women are to learn in a peaceful manner without quarrel. Both men and women are warned against displaying the arrogance of Eve. Now, you make two errors in your argument. One, you mistake Paul’s instruction to a specific situation, for a universal teaching or code of conduct. To be able to ascertain Paul’s overall message, you have to see what Paul’s total message is. Remember Paul also states the “we are all one in Christ.” Two, your rebuttal to my argument is invalid. This is because my argument states that one must be consistent with Christian teaching to call yourself a Christian, which the subject of the video fails to be. You establish a red herring by comparing my apparent lack of adherence to Christian teaching to my claim regarding this video. This still does not address the content of my argument. Let me help you. You could be valid if you questioned whether or not Christianity actually teaches the doctrine that practicing homosexuality is sinful. That would force me to prove the point. Question my adherence to the faith does not do this validly.

Well, to each his own. Everyone is free to their own beliefs. No one is forced to love God. We all have free will. My point is that you can't have it both ways. If you are Christian, that means you believe the Bible and honor God's laws. No, you don't have to! But you can't say you're a Christian and break all of God's laws. That's like saying you are a virgin, but having sex. You can't ride the fence. Now you are free to choose parts of the Bible to follow, and have a spiritual journey, because you agree with some of the teachings. That's fine. But then you really can't logically call yourself a Christian, which is what he is doing.

@wmnoffaith1 Give me a break. All Christians pick and choose what they want to understand from the Bible. It's a gigantic collection of literature full of contradictions and almost infinite interpretations, whose six passages seemingly condemning homosexual behavior tend to become quite ambiguous when one reads them in historical context. We all know the famous examples from Leviticus (mixing fabrics, eating shellfish, etc.) that Christians feel they have the right to ignore, while happily citing the supposed prohibition of gay sex. Deuteronomy teaches that parents have the right to stone their disobedient children to death. Both the old and new testaments seemingly condone slavery. Now you might say, "Ah! But you have to read those passages in their historical context!" And I'd say, "yep, that's the point".

What is striking and somewhat powerful about everyone in the video is that they come across as loving and accepting of one another, they are genuine about what they're doing and who they are, the overall takeaway is a sense of true unity. But I'm convinced that their unity does not come from Christ and His Word, but from themselves; they are united against God, but it doesn't appear that way at all, on the surface that is. But once you get to know Jesus-Christ personally, it becomes very obvious that Jesus-Christ is not their Lord. There is a subtle but fundamental difference between belonging to God and knowing Jesus-Christ and what He demands of His followers and using Jesus-Christ's teachings on mercy to ignore and reject what He says about His Holiness, repentence and sanctification. They are deceived and deceiving others.

Of course this video is going to raise controversy. Christianity and homosexuality reconciled? In the past, when I heard negatives comments about homosexuality, I usually remained silent. Not now. If you are NOT homosexual, why don't you invest your time and energy in something more productive rather than playing the role of God, quoting the Bible and judging other people. Does it make you feel more powerful and better than others ? Now, if you ARE homosexual or have someone near you who is, probably you need reassurance, love and inner peace or help. Some have lived most of their lives in shame and guilt. A horrible burden. And that hasn't help them to fix the problem. To find a community that is supportive is important, like the guy in this video. However, the bottom line is to find peace and acceptance inside ourselves. And believe that God somehow is going to make you live a life worth living.

@howardsmith8879
@howardsmith8879 5 жыл бұрын
The Bible was written by men, to suit mankind living more than 1500 years ago. The fact Christianity has survived till now is surprising in the light of science. We now know It took hundreds of millions of years to create the world we live in. We can trace "creation" by dating rocks and fossils: from the early ammonites, to fish, to amphibians, to reptiles and then mammals. It took apes 2-3 million years to become "man" as we know it. We knew none of this when we listened to Jesus and saw him crucified. God never told us the evolution story. It then took 300 years to write the Bible (on an estimated 360 calf skins for the first edition). It would have been rewritten and corrected many times in the process - improved and adjusted by a plethora of "wise men" with changing ideas, interpretations, special needs and diverse cultures (but with no science/psychology knowledge). The fact the Bible survived till now with all its naivete speaks more about people's psychological need for comfort, hope, direction and a reason for being, than it does the Truth. Remember, it was written before man discovered that Earth was round, or that ours is one of thousands of universes. So in that knowledge vacuum, the Intelligent Design theory hinges on Adam and Eve who had four sons (no daughters) three of whom found wives (perhaps their mother). And later, other improbable yarns like the one involving Noah and his Ark. Jesus and the apostles obviously didn't know about evolution otherwise the Bible would have given God credit for it. In fact, God could have explained a lot of things through Jesus (including that many animals are naturally attracted to the same sex and that it is impossible to change their orientation). Too late now. The Bible "cannot be changed to suit man", so we must interpret it. Islam has a similar problem. The Koran advocates stoning homosexuals to death but in a poll of Muslims in London recently 30% disagreed. Similarly, Christian Fundamentalists won't let anyone queer their pitch. It's hellfire for all homosexuals and the Devil is in charge of it. The Catholics kicked Pip out as if he was a philistine. Understandable given the "One True Church's" reputation. However, a more pragmatic brotherhood, the acute Anglicans, who must have put the Bible's thesis up for queer review, noticed a few anomalies and decided to let Nature take its course. They hired Pip and made him a priest. For all the gay Christians or parents of gay or transgender children out there, I can hear them now: Praise the Pragmatists.

THE SINS THAT CRY TO HEAVEN FOR VENGEANCE 5 . They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intimacies with them." 6 . Lot went out to meet them at the entrance. When he had shut the door behind him, 7 . he said, "I beg you, my brothers, not to do this wicked thing. 8 . I have two daughters who have never had intercourse with men. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you please. But don't do anything to these men, for you know they have come under the shelter of my roof." 9 . They replied, "Stand back! This fellow," they sneered, "came here as an immigrant, and now he dares to give orders! We'll treat you worse than them!" With that, they pressed hard against Lot, moving in closer to break down the door. 10 . But his guests put out their hands, pulled Lot inside with them, and closed the door; 11 . at the same time they struck the men at the entrance of the house, one and all, with such a blinding light that they were utterly unable to reach the doorway. 12 . Then the angels said to Lot: "Who else belongs to you here? Your sons (sons-in-law) and your daughters and all who belong to you in the city - take them away from it! 13 . We are about to destroy this place, for the outcry reaching the LORD against those in the city is so great that he has sent us to destroy it." -- Genesis 19:5 - 13 True friends don't let friends get sodomized!

The idea that anyone at all can read the Bible and whatever’s written there is the way things have to be is a relatively modern invention, developed by the Protestant reformers when they threw out the faith as it had existed for 1500 years and reinvented everything. @@gregs3220Where does it say we need more than the Word of God?There we can read how to be saved, how to be a disciple of Christ, and we use the Word to teach eachother and be the Church. Your first question is answerd by 1 john: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1‭, ‬3‭-‬4 NKJV II Tim 3:16 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. II Timothy 3:15‭-‬17 NKJV But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29 NKJV Second statement: it is written that people in the flesh can not please God (romans 8:8), not people who have no faith. By faith you are saved, but by what kind of faith is written in hebrews 11. And your statement that without the priest: no authority. Where does it say that? Yes God uses apostles to help built churches, but apostles are still part of the body of Christ and not more than any other human being. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Luke 10:19 NKJV Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. Titus 2:15 NKJV Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. Luke 9:1 NKJV not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. II Thessalonians 3:9 NKJV We are the temple of Christ, the body of Christ. Not a building. We can use a building to come together and celebrate was God does in is, but it is not the place where He dwells: Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. Pip has gone through real pain. He obviously missed some critical male bonding when he was young. But he and his ex-wife are very confused and are causing much damage to themselves and others.Example 1The fact of a man craving his wife is NOT about objectifying her. Married sex between man and wife is about mutual self-giving where two literally become one. It is an icon of the Trinity. It is so precious to God that He enables the couple to become co-creators.That is NEVER possible with same-sex couples.Example 2While God may operate in unexpected ways, He NEVER contradicts Himself. He has an established order that humans are duty bound to abide by.What He wants from us is simple: that we love Him back and abide in His will. That's it.What He wants is for us to do these things so we can get to our true home, the one He has prepared for us. Don't trade the eternal banquet that is our true inheritance for the temporary potato chips of this world.

There are many deliverance ministries who go to the source of the problem and the person is freed from the oppression. This is not a natural condition, but spiritual in origin !!! Those who sought spiritual help found it, instead of trying to deal with it on their own in their own way, which is a futile exercise; and being angry at someone else. This is a result of spiritual oppression, evil spirits. The thing I noticed the most was the unconditional love. Too bad most churches I have attended have not been loving places and I am a straight older lady who needs fellowship.. I feel excluded in most churches. They have become money oriented and not Houses of prayer and restoration for broken people who need a savoir named Jesus! I am not saying I agree with what was presented in this video, but there was undeniably love there.

Mary Wolfe no! Love only exists when we are in grace with God. You mistakenly saw desire as love. There can be no love without God. And Jesus said to love God is to obey His Law. Pray for these people but don’t encourage their lifestyle.

I was raised in a conservative Roman Catholic home. I knew I was gay from an early age. I stuffed it. I got married to a woman hoping it would "fix" me. It didn't work. I have been with my husband for 25 years. I have never been happier. I will never set foot in a church again.

Focussing on the suffering of the man? Not really. Most of the times I see lots of things that focus on the suffering of woman as they have been oppressed for centuries. I think it's good to see the many sufferings that men can endure too. In many ways it makes us all equal and together as humans.

One nice thing about Christianity in the Western World is that there exists a wide range of churches with varied beliefs. One can always leave a church that is not the right fit and find one that is. No-one should stay in a church that is psychologically, emotionally and spiritually damaging.

By the same token, it kind of underscores the fundamental lunacy of the project given there are literally thousands of different, competing versions of "the truth" - often times at odds with one another about the "correct" interpretation of their ancient tales.

I hear your words but you have not explained, that you are being disobedient to Gods word. I see you are struggling with this still, and you have found a way in which to deal with it, but it still against God's word. How will you answer to God when you stand before him. This is the thing, if you believe in God and know that the bible is is word. How do you deal with rejecting his commands. The bible tells us that God does sees homosexuality as a sin there are a few scriptures that confirm that. God bless you brother and I pray God will show you the truth. No matter how you look at it the bible is clear about this subject, and you will not enter the kngdom of heaven , not my words God's word.

@@gregs3220 What do you think he should do? Stay in denial? Drink himself to death? Lie to everybody? Would that be a family? He tried the way his church gave him. Believed in their support and thought they were right while they said "we can fix you". Married a girl. Had two kids. And this so called "therapy" didn't help him. Marriage didn't help him. It didn't work. Homosexuality wasn't a choice. His choice was "to become straight". But that's not who he is. Should we condemn him? So here they were: husband and wife understanding that they cannot do more. Faced the wall. So they navigated through it the best way they could. Parenthood and creating home for their boys was their priority. I think it is a family they have. Thought there is a lack of balance. She seems unhappy in it but she decided to sacrifice... I think there would be place for her finding love. You know there were times where human sexuality wasn't so severely restricted? For exaple in Ancient Greece: men loved other men, men loved women. And nobody cared. People of Imperium Romanum started feeling bad about their sexuality only after reading saint Paul. They didn't find any natural or ethical reasons to condemn homoeroticism before they encountered saint Paul's teachings. And that was the point. Apostles came from the community which stoned homosexuals to death. The cultural biases of ancient Jews were the reason for banning homosexual relationships in Christianity. Not the reason, not the nature - writings of a single guy based on ancient laws of a handful of people living in the desert. And yes, this is strange that he still clings on to the Bible and Christianity. Lives in contradiction. Believes Bible and denies it. It would be healthier for him/for them to see what a destructive book it is, not just to pretend that certain passages aren't there. He wants to have a connection to God and is very much attached to the idea that Jesus is God. But all in all Bible is just a book written by men and says nothing of God but all about ancient Jews' religious views...
