Serbia is a country in the Balkans with a rich, but brutal, history. After suffering millions of deaths in the Balkan Wars, WW1, WW2 and the Yugoslav wars all within just one century, it is no surprise that all this must have, in one way or another, left a scar on the country. In this video, I go over Serbian history in about 8 minutes.

SERBS AND ARMENIANS: A MILLENNIUM FRATERNITY ✅ Armenians were recorded in Serbia in 1218 when Saint Sava invited constructors to build a Serbian Orthodox monastery after he had been to Armenia and seen the beautiful Armenian architecture there. The Armenians were to build Vitovnica Monastery, which has preserved a bilingual sacral text in Serbian and Armenian dating to the building. ✅ Armenians were a small part of the Ottoman Turkish army when they invaded Serbia prior to the Battle of Kosovo 1389. However upon hearing that they would attack a Christian people, they fled the Ottomans to the other side to fight alongside the Serbs. After the battle, the surviving Armenians settled in the hills of Sokobanja where they built Jermenčić Monastery. ✅ Remains of an Armenian graveyard lie in Kalemegdan fortress, which was last used in the 17th century after the Ottomans destroyed it. In 1810 the Turks destroyed the Celije Monastery, and the Serbs rebuilt it in 1811 with the help of wealthy Armenians. ✅ In 1880s, Soghomon Tehlirian's father from the Gamakh region in Armenia settled in Valjevo. Didnt know this. Interesting. I had luck to visit Yerevan 5-6 years ago. Your Echimiazin church in Yerevan is gorgeous but i found it odd that it had ornaments instead of pictures on the wall. Can you tell me more about Armenian faith. I guess you are Christians, but not catholic and not orthodox either. I heard word "apostolic" but i never understood it.

Serbia should be respected for its history and fighting the Ottomans to help liberate entire Europe. Now I know why the other ex Yugo countries hate Serbia and wanted to destroy them through history. Its because they didn't exist as long as Serbia has and haven't the history Serbia does in the Balkans. And they don't like that fact! Thanks for clearing this up. Much love and respect for Serbia from Australia.. Ive read many depictions that are similar and they need to be shared. History cannot be forgotten. Nowhere and no place. 🙏

Following the data mentioned above, I think that the ethnicity of the Nemanjids should be sought among the other indigenous peoples of the Balkans. The biblical name Naman in the original, without any change, is found today only among Albanians, so I think that Nemanja was of Albanian ethnicity from Rasa, where even today that region is known for its high quality marble stone rasas. It is known that the Old Slavic Glagolitic script has its origin and center in Ohrid during the Bulgarian rule. This script was created by Cyril and Methodius after the second half of the 9th century. There are many scholars who think that Cyril and Methodius were of Jewish ethnicity. The Bulgarian nobles together with the autochthonous nobles ruled Kosovo from the middle of the 9th century until the beginning of the 11th century, and the Byzantine Empire until the last decade of the 12th century, when again the local nobles came out to rule from time to time these three years until the definitive occupation of Kosovo by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. From these data we understand that the beginnings of the ethnic formation of the Serbs should be sought parallel to the beginnings of the falsification of the historiography of the Balkans under the influence of Russian Pan-Slavism, and of Serbian literature that begins with Vuk Karadjik's dictionary in the 19th century. From these data we come to the conclusion that the world historiography and in particular the Albanian historiography does not dare to support the opinion of the formation of the Serbian kingdom and the Serbian Orthodox Church in the 13th-14th century, when it is known that the 19th century is taken as the century of the formation of the nations in the Balkans . In the Hebrew language, the root of the word faith, "Emunah" is Amen. The use of "Amen" as a word that came from the time of the Bible, symbolizes an agreement or adaptation, an expectation from oneself that one undertakes. "Amen" means taking personal and collective responsibility that is beyond an ideological agreement. "Amen" holds the conclusion of an agreement for a future dialogue between the three religions. The question is added, does this word apply today to us Albanians!?

@@lunalee18 Cyril and Methodius were definitely not Jews, they were Byzantine Slavs but we shouldn't look at their ethnicity as they wouldn't identify with it but with their religion, such a thing is a modern concept.

You said that "It would take until 1944 for the Soviet red army to liberate Yugoslavia", though Yugoslavia is quite generally known for their guerilla war against the occupiers and eventually also the liberation of their own nation... So the red army didn't actually liberate Yugoslavia, it was mostly liberated by the Yugoslav guerilla fighters (with the leadership of Josip Broz Tito), which also led to Yugoslavia being almost completely independent in regards to the Soviet influence in eastern Europe... Just wanted to point that out, but overall a great video!

Yeah that sounds a bit off. Ok maybe that 'liberation' just got out of hand a lil bit. Liberated the hell out of them just like the sudetenland that they liberated from those elderly German people and children. In Soviet Union...Liberation is worse than invasion 😵☺ I supose in this instance of the balkans the communism actually was a liberating force, HA you know something is real bad or has tendencies to be really bad if communism improved it. But better that it was Tito rather than Stalin 😬. The Balkans maybe one of the most volitile regions in the world. So much extreme history its amazing these small nations have remained..as nations through the thickest of trials mixin it up with the biggest baddest empires and yet still exist to this day. Nationalism is important and every nation must have it and understand it. Some will say look at the Balkans! Nationalism made them revert to war and so its bad! Yeah it can happen...but their identity and making important national respect and loyalty has also kept them alive for over 1000 years, and the fact that these are small countries makes that really stand out. The borders and long intense history make that place a hair triggered powder keg thats why its so important for intelligent, smart, and principled leaders must be chosen...easier said than done right, and still thats no guarantee. 🍻Peace and prosperity to the Balkans and the Yugoslavs.

C Harris Tito partizans were apart from red army and he officially broke up with Staline in 1948. The Tchetniks of General Mihajlovic also kicked a lot of Nazi asses. We still need to recognize the liberation of Belgrade by red army by air as you recall it and that's why we celebrate it almost every year with Russian leaders but you have to know that we're also very proud to never had help from anybody else on our ground during ww2.

It's very hard for a North American like me to understand how some countries who share the same land and are neighbours, can be enemies. I guess it's because there's not enough territory. It seems hard to understand how people living so close together can have such different belief systems. Yet it's clinging to those old beliefs that causes conflict. It's so sad that we can't all just think of ourselves as HUMANS from Earth BEFORE we think of ourselves as Italian, British, Russian, Serbian, American, etc-- or Jewish, Christian, Moslem, etc. Because it is those 'categories' of humans that causes so much grief and death. And our stupid pride and ego won't let us let go of ancient and destructive tribal belief systems. We're so proud of our country's heritage-- how about being proud of our human and world heritage instead, and remember that, as humans, the ways in which we are the same is nature-made (we all have 2 eyes, ears, arms, legs, one brain, one heart, etc), but our differences (beliefs, traditions, languages, culture, etc), are all MAN-MADE. And it's the ways in which we are the SAME that are MUCH more important than the ways in which we are different. Then maybe we'd help each other and share more, rather than hurt, kill, and steal from each other.

Is there any evidence about Albanians in Balkans before 14th century? Exactly, there isn't. Because the 14th century includes the 1389 year a.k.a the battle of Kosovo and because the 14th century is the century when Serbs met Ottoman Turks for the first time. Did you get it yet? Albanians were small tribe located in southeastern Asia nearby Caucasus mountains and they where brought to Balkans by Ottoman Turks to cover their borders there. Again, is there any evidence about Albania in Balkans before 14th century? No. All the sudden they appear there in the beginning of 15th century just after first few wars between Ottoman Turks and Serbs. Prove me wrong.

Serbia existed since the 1st century as a country. Illyrians were Serbs, not Albanians. Serbs are the oldest nation in Europe. The civilization is estimated to be around 15000 years. The first "modern" Serbian country is around 7500 years old and is the cradle of the European civilizations. Vincha and Lepenski Vir are the oldest places in Europe, and since the Serbian culture is very mysterious, you can see that Serbian traditions and Vinchan culture are really similiar. Even the haplogroups are matching so why would you not say that Serbia isn't an ancient country in any way. +Albanians were never connected to the Illyrians and here's why: Illyrians were Serbs who lived in the Roman province of Illyricum. Albanians are a Turkic Tribe who originated from the 12th century, who lived in the Caucasian mountains (somewhere around Azerbaijan). Austrians requested to create Albania and make up a story for it so Serbia wouldn't become independent and become strong again since it was a Turkish/Ottoman province. After Albanian ethnicity was created in the middle 1800s, and the people were spread throughout Epirus, Macedonia, Montenegro, Sandžak and Kosovo. That's also how the term "Greater Albania" was created. After the league of Prizren, Serbia has regained some land after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and in 1882 became a Kingdom where it has gotten most of Vardar Macedonia and had split parts of it's land with Montenegro. In the 1900s first Albanian country was created, around 1912 and 1913. Some time after the First Balkan War has broken out and Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Montenegro have defeated the Ottoman Empire. Rumelia, Thrace, Macedonia and most of Greece were ruled by Turkey. Bulgaria couldn't have won the war all alone with them, so Serbia and Bulgaria signed a treaty which assigned (Vardar) Macedonia to Serbia, and Southern Macedonia to Bulgaria. In May of 1912 Greece and Bulgaria have signed a treaty and making use of military actions against the Turkish Empire, and a similar treaty concluded with Serbia in September of 1912. Bulgaria refused to commit any agreements of distribution of any territorial gains, unlike it's deal with Serbia against Macedonia, and the Bulgarians wanted to occupy some larger parts of Greek Macedonia including Thessaloniki. In 1911, the Italians have launched an invasion of modern-day Libya. The victory was theirs. The Balkan League thought of defeating and achieving the desires of defeating and liberating the people of the much stronger country. The first to declare the war was Montenegro, in October of 1912. An ultimatum was sent to Istanbul on the 13th of October. Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece declared a war on the Empire on the 17th of October. Thrace was conquered by Bulgaria and shortly after Thessaloniki was the target of the Bulgarians. Greece was heavily outnumbered but somehow liberated the Epirus. Albania hasn't had much history but they were invaded by Italy in April of 1939. The Albanian Communist Party was formed around that time and Enver Hoxha became the leader of the newly independent country. When the Nazi's occupied Yugoslavia, Italy did too with Albania where dozens of genocides happened in Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. That is how the first borders of Greater Albania were created, but that hasn't happened because of Italy. After the WW1 ended, Tito proposed a union with Albania, since he wanted to create a Greater Yugoslavia. The ethnic land from the 1800s was still mainly Albanian and Tito wanted to give Kosovo to them so they could unite. Albanians ended up wanting to unite so they could somehow create Greater Albania. After Tito's death in 1980, Yugoslavia has had a lot of problems since Tito was keeping the country stable. Kosovo was a part of Serbia back then and after Croatia and Slovenia gained independence from Yugoslavia, a war has broken out where Serbia has requested to reunite Yugoslavia to just keep the country stable and running, for the economics at least. Bosnia was separated from them shortly after and Albanians have organized protests in Albania and on Kosovo, and Serbia and Bosnia were famous for the war crimes. In late 1990s, Slobodan Milošević (Also my grandma's old elementary school classmate and friend) was famous along the Serbs on Kosovo. Well, he did bad things and the Kosovo war broke out in 1998. Albania has gotten help from NATO, and the so called "KLA" got involved shortly after and then Bill Clinton and Joe Biden suggested to bomb Serbia and they did it in 1999, with the help of NATO, which actually confirmed the fact that KLA was a terrorist organization led by Albanian war criminals, such as Thaçi. The USA didn't have permission from NATO to bomb Serbia, but they did it and they were even harsher than they were supposed to be. After Yugoslavia collapsed in 2006, Kosovo has gained independence from Serbia in February of 2008. For now, Kosovo and Metochia is a partially recognized and a disputed region of Serbia.

6:19 stop right here. The Soviets didnt liberate Yugoslavia, Tito and his partizans did. Thats a huge mistake. This is also a reason why the Soviets had no influence in Yugoslavia afterwards like in the other communist nations, as no troops where stationed there.

Um that's just a common joke/meme here in Serbia. We actually pretty much like Bulgarians. And we learn in high schools about serbo-bulgarian war 1885 so don't worry. (fun fact it's the only offensive war in serbias modern history)

60 seconds in, already cap. If you love history you would look at ancient sources and not serbian propoganda. The first Slavs arrived in the Balkans in the 6th century, the Byzantines first mentioned 3 tribes. The Sclavenians, the Venetii and the Anteans, which migrated from Russia.
