Pirbright is a village in Surrey, and is in the borough of Guildford. David Chown joins me again as we wander to the church and have a look at the delightful 17th century rebuilding of the much earlier religious house that was once stood there.
Explorer Henry Morton Stanley has his imposing boulder grave at the end of the grounds of the grade II* listed medieval church.

Like yourself Richard, even though I have no religious leanings, I love looking around old churches. As I think I may have mentioned before, I usually look at the list of those who died in WWI and WWII. It's often sad to see how many who were obviously of the same family, died in those conflicts .......... Alan

A lovely church - it reminds me internally of the churches in the city of London. Some interesting history from the website regarding its construction... ‘By 1783 the ancient building had become very dilapidated. The Parish registers note that Thomas Newman and Elizabeth Woods had to be married in Worplesdon, Pirbright church 'being out of repair'. Pirbright was at that time a very poor village, and villagers could not meet the cost of rebuilding, so a meeting was held at the White Hart pub and the decision made to apply for permission to raise money by public subscription. A statement in the Overseers’ Accounts declares : ‘1785: Att a publik vestry call, this thirteenth Day of September at the Wyte hart to impower Thomas Woods and John Collins Churchwardens………. to Bori mony towards the Bilden of the Curch we under set our hands to agree to hit’. Just at that time King George III was travelling through Pirbright when his coach was overturned. The villagers rescued him and gave him hospitality whilst his coach was repaired. Such was his gratitude that he issued a petition for all the churches in England to contribute to the rebuilding of Pirbright Church. A copy of that petition can be seen in the church today. The funds were raised and in 1785 the church and tower were taken down and rebuilt, the church with brick and the Lady Chapel and tower with small squared stones dug from the neighbouring commons.’ Also, you were right about the organ, being completed in 2010!

That was a fascinating church & it did look much more modern than 18th century! I really found it interesting that the sign of St Michael's that you were reading had a dragon on it!!!You could tell it was a very well maintained & cared for building. Lovely, lovely building!

The worshippers of Pirbright are numerous or wealthy, because that's a heck of an organ for a modestly sized church.

Interesting gravestone I have seen it a few times in the past. Going from memory I think the stone came from Africa and the inscription of Bula Matari in one of the African languages means Stonebreaker He had his House and estate just to the west of the church with a small river running through it which he called after an African river it may also have had a small lake

Lovely graveyard and attractive church from the outside. Inside, a little disappointing, but the lack of windows in the Chancel is very unusual, the originals seemingly blocked by the added side aisles.

I often wonder if the large church organs require any special maintenance or regular tuning , and who does it , also if anyone still builds them ?
@RichardVobes

I guess they must need maintenance. I imagine there is a company somewhere that still builds them.
