I disagree. I think this movie was about a woman taking control of her own mortality. I thought having the main character of a survival movie be a terminal cancer patient was a really cool, unique idea. Sure, it was sad but not bleak.
@dervishhh44756 ай бұрын
Agreed. And it was about her grace and strength of character staring down the barrel of death. She even gained a follower in Quinn's character who clearly took one look at her and decided she was his best chance at survival. She had nothing to lose and didn't squander the opportunity to make her death mean something.

"Why couldn't she be the final girl?" Why did she have to be? Sam's motivation throughout the movie was to go home. To literally (and figuratively) get pizza. Her arc by the end saw her coming to terms with what was happening to her, find peace with it, and go out on her own terms, whilst also saving someone who had in turn helped her. It's a beautiful story, and it's sad that you would rather just have a trope.

There are some fantastic shots (I'm still thinking of the puppet show scene) and to me the film had many positive messages within, specifically with how sometimes people who have already given up find a reason to keep going. Just saw the film today, and I really enjoyed the movie! It is bleak, but I consider that a theme of the entire series. The multiple commentaries on communication are very nuanced, and each installment is ambitious in their own respects. Like others have mentioned in the comments, I appreciated the arc of Lupita's character. She starts the film thinking everything is sh!t (poem) but then after SURVIVING one hell of a day, getting that pizza and finding the totem of her father, the character went out with a bang (jazz song). I am loving this series of films; thinking about what new innovative ways the creatives can twist this idea is fascinating. Loved that she helped try to save those kids and she took on the lawyer as a stray. BRAVO

I just came back from the movie. While I agree it's sad, I found it sad in a satisfying way. Not in a "what were they thinking?" way. I also kind of disagree that the movie is more of a bummer than what people expected. I mean, going into this movie everyone KNOWS for a fact that the world basically ends, and that the crisis will not get resolved. It's inherently baked into the premise. I also don't understand this stuff about how the writer/director "didn't understand the assignment." The previous two movies in this franchise had a heavy emphasis on character. They were basically family dramas where the creatures were used as a plot device to highlight the character moments. This movie largely does the same. Or was the "assignment" here supposed to be a dumb action movie, even though that's not what the franchise has been about thus far? Edit: Also, the audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes have become utterly meaningless to me. It could be an authentic reflection of people's good faith observations, or it could just be an indication that a film drew the ire (or support) of various 4-Chan groups for totally silly, arbitrary reasons. It's quite possible that the middling Rotten Tomatoes average came from people who were outraged that a black actress was headlining the movie and that Hollywood is "shoving diversity down our throats."
