Just from seeing my parents being together 64 yrs, back in 58 they were proud to call each other Mr & Mrs ... he cherished my mama and my Mama adored him. She passed in Feb this year and he said sadly with tears in his eyes, "now I'm just a man again" Meaning he lost half of himself when he lost her. 😢

There are only 4 good things I got from being married...the first three, my fantastic boys and wonderful daughter, and his last name as my maiden name was a horror of major proportions...but your story brought tears to my eyes...your mom and dad were so very lucky to have found their true soul mate...and that is rare indeed...

@@tcovington0711 sadly most the time love turns bad, I had a bad 1st marriage I was divorced 12 yrs before I met my husband now we just celebrated 9 yrs. My oldest sister refuses to date or remarry after her marriage of 18 yrs ended, she has 3 sons and 7 grandchildren, I think she got the best deal of all, all the babies. We've found love in ❤️ our children. My son went through 10 yrs of heroine addiction, the hardest of time for me, I was on the edge of losing him forever and in his tenderness of ages 17 to 27, it really took a toll on our family. He's doing far better now, he works full time with my Dad and keeping straight. I have an 8 yr old daughter with my current husband and she has brought so much joy. She helped save her brother. Now we all come together as a family of love and support. We have moments that are trying but the one thing we always remember is how much we all love each other and no problem can become more important than our love ❤️

23 years ago I ADDED an identity to my name. I became MORE than just my name. "Mrs." was an honor to take but I'm sure that depends on who you marry! I'm still in love with my guy and happy to be Mrs. I wish I could hear it more often, but then, I'm a sucker for manners and being old-fashioned I guess.😉 I love every video you make. You are a count of knowledge! Thank you for sharing YOU!

When I got married 25 years ago I was proud to take my husband’s surname and call myself Mrs. I’m now a widow and still proud to call myself Mrs because it links me to my late husband. However I’ve always used my own first name.

Nobody I knew who was married ever called themselves Ms but then I’ve been married for 58 years. Now I just use my first name followed by my married surname. I’m still the same person whatever name I use.

I was married in 1970. Because I had always looked very young I used “Mrs” as my first name. It helped somewhat. Whenever I answered the phone people would ask if my mommy was home, so it didn’t help much!

This is a great page, always interesting creative ideas. Love the old pages and history it adds to the book. As well interesting conversation on the title of Mrs. As a woman married for 52 years I feel no less a person with being called Mrs. I believe in a marriage where you have mutual love and respect for one another it is a blessing. Having been raised in a family who had generations of life long examples of faith based relationships, where Christ is the head, the women in my family, were not less for being married. I guess it really depends on the way one looks at their own individually. It should never be a battle of identity.

You go Nik 🤩 not only do you create amazing books and provide education and entertainment, you also take the time to look up historical information. I was thinking that the Mrs. and husband’s name reminded me of when my son was little and everyone referred to me as “his first name’s mom” instead of my own first name 😂

Totally get where you are coming from, I am 57 and felt that was ridiculous 🙂 I am in Texas . Family is from Southern roots and I asked my Grandmother about this once and she said this was mainly used for the high society women and I probably would not have to worry about it, she was always known by her name. 🤣 She was not being mean to me, she thought when my time came this tradition would not be used anymore. ❤❤❤ I think whatever makes YOU happy and does not hurt other life forms. I love so many traditions that might sound crazy to others✌️❣️❤️

At some point I just lost interest in using a title that seemed to signify that I existed for my mr., as if I were not my own person and capable of running my own life and affairs without a man. Then I was widowed at age 41 and felt free to no longer use it at all. I would never change that or use a man's last name again. Wish I'd never done it in the first place. Took me so long to feel like I belonged to me. Age 61 now, learning to be my own true love. Still love and miss the mr. Always will. NIK, your work, as you know, is special and very lovely. I never tire of seeing your creation process and result. Thank you for so much inspiration and enjoyment.

I was married in 1969 and used Mrs. because we all did. When we bought our first house all the paperwork was in my husband’s name even though he was in grad school and I was a full-time school teacher. When Ms Magazine came out I became Ms Smith. I did not want to be defined by my marital status . Oh yes, love your creativity.🍂🍁🐿

This is how I feel about it, too. I do use my first name though. Now when I got divorced from my first husband, I took my maiden name back. When I remarried, I inserted my maiden name as a middle name behind the middle name my mom gave me. I feel like names are still important.

Something else: I think it used to work like that in Spanish time ago: la señora, la doña was the woman in charge, like la patrona. La señorita would be the miss, indeed indicating the daughter of the owners of the place or the "important" people. Thank you, Nik!

I loved your commentary about losing your identity when getting married. I could hug you! I hyphenated back in '89 when I got married the first time and kept my surname the second and third time. When my husband asks me about it I say you could have taken my name and lost your identity. It shuts him up. Anyway, I love your raggedy books and watching your process!

Congrats on reaching this incredible milestone with your channel! Wow! 100K is impressive. I love your journals, style, aesthetic, everything and learn something in every one of your videos. I actually didn’t change my name when I got married. I intended to, but different life circumstances got in the way, and here we are 15 years later and, though I’m married, I’m not really a “Mrs.”. I’m okay with that. Thanks for being an incredible source of inspiration. Hugs from Ky.

Great video Nik. I've been married 21 years and when I took on Spanish citizenship I not only kept my own surname but my mother's maiden name was added to the end of it. Here in Spain, everyone has 2 surnames. Both men and women have their father's first surname and then their mother's maiden name (her first surname). It never changes. As a woman, you simply go from Miss to Mrs (with the same surnames). I think it's fabulous!

Women in their 50s and older have to suffer through being called “Miss” regardless of marital status, in the South at least. In my dentist’s office, I’m called “Miss Lynn,” even though I have told him and his employees that I prefer Lynn or Ms. Duvall. I think it’s a misguided attempt to indicate elder respect, but it makes me feel like a Tennessee Williams character or a plantation owner. It’s insulting and I absolutely loathe it. Does this happen in other parts of the US?

I got married in 1974 and women were starting to embrace the idea of being married and still having an identity. So of course I had to upset the old school rules, keep my maiden name, refuse to say "obey" in the vows and actually write my own vows. We just celebrated 48 years of marriage, so I guess I didn't make the wrong choice.

When I was single, I would receive calls from businesses and they would speak directly to me. Once I married, the same type of businesses would call about random things asking for "Mr". I said I was the Mrs. but they told me they could only speak to "Mr. Colin". When they called back and spoke to my husband, it was regarding nothing important. The next time that happened I said my name was Collen and they talked to me about unimportant matters like a sales phone call...nothing confidential. I don't like being treated or addressed as Mrs. when my identity is ignored!

When I worked in the local museum it was frustrating not know / or have the ladies first names, it made historical documentation very difficult, if not impossible at times! I do think there are probably many many regional uses of titles, some not at all meant to be disrespectful! I would and still do call many of my fellow colleagues or even dear friends, married or unmarried, Miss ________ as a term of endearment! Ha ha which also caused confusion, as many people thought/ think I was raised in the South! Not ! Colorado 63 years proud !!! Hugs all around Miss Nik!!!

I was a journalist before I met my husband in the late 1980’s and my byline was very important to me and my employment status. The more recognizable and consistent it was, the more I was likely to be paid. When we married, I insisted on keeping my byline name for business and financial transactions. It was a real sore point with him. He would joke that I didn’t want to admit to being married. Eventually, I began to hyphenate our last names as a part of my byline and legal signature. In some cases, I am still asked to prove my identity with photo ID, especially in the South. Where we live now, most just know me as Mrs. XXXX. It makes me feel as though my whole career is being denied and sometimes I really hate it. My husband still does not understand. Who is disrespecting who?😁😂

Here's a tidbit about titles, etc. - if a woman has a PhD or MD, or other doctoral degree and her husband doesn't, when she and her husband use their signatures or on invitations, the proper way to sign or address is Dr. Jane Doe and Mr. John Doe, Jr., for example. That's the case for us, and if I don't do it that way, my husband and kids have me change it. They appreciate the work I had to do to get here.

I was married in 1978 and yes older people would refer to me by my husbands name….hated it. I applied for a credit card and they would only give it to me in my husbands name…even though I applied for it and I was the one working ( my husband was still in university). This infuriated me.

Indeed this titles info is fascinating! I take the thing a little bit further and do not use my husband's last name... I feel that I have married him and have not been adopted by him... I also find it so... surprising to read about women keeping "his" last name even after a divorce! Just WOW. Unpopular opinion, maybe? oh well, I know... Let us craft! Your raggedies are always awesome as awesome can be. Thank you, Nik!

In Italy we don't change our name once we get married and to me it's quite quirky that you do. But hey, you do you! Everyone 's culture is different and there is beauty in that too.

I'm proud to be my husband's wife and I love him dearly but I'm not his Mrs. As I've learned about lithe use of the title "Mrs." it was almost an indication of ownership and I'm certainly no one's possession. And no one here need attack me for my opinion. I won't be swayed. Beautiful work as usual! Thanks for sharing, Nik.

Having married into the Smith clan, I have on occasion introduced myself as Mrs. Smith…although I don’t bake pies.

Omg this is a bug Bear of mine! Here in Ireland the men were always Paddy, Mick, John etc. but the women were always Mrs. Byrne, Mrs. Doyle, Mrs. Kenny and so on. So silly!

I never thought it was fair that woman had different titles, depending on whether they were married, and men didn't. "Ms." helped but always seemed awkward. Lots of things were pretty crappy. Not using titles (except for Dr. or something earned) makes the most sense to me. I love how you tell us about whatever has caught your interest and you've researched.
