A Rare Black Drum Redfish Hybrid

Two anglers believe they landed a redfish-black drum hybrid in Florida. Although redfish and black drum are both in the Sciaenidae family, they spawn in distinctive areas and at different times of the year. To see a hybrid of the two species in the wild is very rare.

Never caught a hybrid drum. But I have caught a freshwater drum, aka: gaspergou. At the time I had never heard of them, I was super confused.

I spoke to a few people who claim they have caught these hybrids. Back in 2006, I spoke with TPWD, and I was told they were trying to produce these hybrids. To have introduce another game fish. I never heard or saw anything become of it.

Has anyone ever caught a redfish with eggs? I have been fishing the La. coast for 25 years and have never caught a red that contained eggs.

LSU already did a study on this 35 years ago, in an attempt to produce & farm the hybrid drum, it worked well until their funding dried up.
