I saw a lot of people not sure what Jacob's speech could mean, or if it had any meaning at all. So, I thought I'd throw together one possible interpretation to help steer things in the right direction with regards to understanding this scene. This scene may also have larger implications to the course of the Season, but I've only just watched up to this episode so I can't speak to that larger scope. Hopefully, some find it helpful. Hillbilly is Jacob. Redneck is Bobby Dean. The Redneck drinking whiskey is a symbol for gluttony and sloppiness. The reference about Adam and Eve is a metaphor for disobedience to one's master by questioning His judgement. That he, the redneck, feels comfortable even voicing dissenting ideas about God alludes to a lack of respect, which is Bobby not protecting Jacob's interests. Then, to further emphasize his sloppy, wonton recklessness in the face of the almighty, he throws his garbage (the whiskey bottle) upon the earth, which can also be read as the first overt sign of Jacob holding Bobby responsible for the messiness, regardless of who snitched. The next two pieces, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." and "Ye judge doubly, ye sin twice." is a bit layered. The first layer is the Redneck using God's own words to shirk responsibility, thereby hiding behind a Master he does not respect. The second layer is Jacob calling out not only Bobby's inability to display good judgment in the first place, but then displaying even worse judgement by coming there and making his problems now Jacob's problems. So, naturally, "God struck him dead" for his continued disrespect, disobedience, foolishness, and self-centeredness, which is pretty self-explanatory by what happens to Bobby. The next part, the burying, laying the bottle as a tombstone(which is Jacob needing to clean up Bobby's mess), and the Hillbilly continuing on his way is insight into Jacob's perspective that his obedience is pure, and his path is divinely guided, which is further emphasized by the gift of the sunset, which is him planning to take matters into his own hands and be better off for this moment God has given him to see his weaknesses(Bobby, and the man he doesn't know yet), which he is grateful for.
@bluesuncompanyman Жыл бұрын
Your analysis is pretty much on point to what I've seen previously seen discussed, with one thing I could add for you. The redneck was undone by God, not killed by the hillbilly, for the sin of throwing his garbage upon the good earth. This makes the killing of the redneck an act of divinity, rather than an act of murder. It's Jacob's way of saying that Bobby's impending death is not only justified, it is pre-ordained and therefore not Jacob's sin for ordering it.

Im 6th generation “Ozarkian American” and my family is from about 45 minutes from where this was show was “set”. (Ie. The actual Ozarks) It’s obviously fictionalized but the family clan dynamics are very real. He was differentiating between the reckless and entitled “redneck” and the more pious and thoughtful “hillbilly”. It’s a common error and one that will definitely get you in trouble in the wrong company. The dramatic effect was to illustrate to the audience he was cold and calculating. Underestimate people at your own peril.
