A Relaxing Winter Hot Tent Camp with my Dog - Wood Stove and Campfire

Come camping with me. I am heading in to the mountains of the South Island of New Zealand with my dog Indi. I am taking my Pomoly Hussar 2.0 Hot Tent and wood stove as it is going to drop below freezing overnight. There will be rain, overnight sleet, and the chance of snow on the mountains. This is one of my favourite wild camping spots. There are beautiful views of the snow capped mountains, a river close by, and a beautiful secluded area for my tent. I am going to light the woodstove and an outdoor campfire, drink some mulled wine, cook delicious food on the woodstove, and relax and enjoy the therapeutic effects of being out in nature.

Always glad to see Indy with you. So funny being Canadian with a winter time opposite of yours. We are in the middle of a heat wave here in Southern Ontario with 30-40° temps all week. As I write this in Leeds, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 at 15.00 hrs, we are experiencing a heatwave with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees 🥵🥵. Oh my gosh, I can only imagine that heat. If only we could just gift each other a few degrees either way. It is so soggy here. The ground is saturated and there is not enough heat in the sun to dry it up. Everything feels wet and cold. sigh. Never mind, the shortest day has passed so I am looking ahead, while trying to enjoy what we have and not wish it away.

Given the chance she would have raced to the tree they were in and barked and jumped up to 'get them'. I felt a bit bad growling at her to leave them alone, but it's a firm rule of mine that she not chase anything at all. It will just land her in trouble one day if she thinks she can.

Thank you. I do recommend it. One of the best things was being able to lean over in the morning and light the stove to warm up, then fall back asleep and wake to a lovely warm environment. It makes it so might nicer.

I am loving your trips with this tent With or without the fire, it is an incredibly versatile tent The guy ropes seem to be very visible in low light..is this a feature of the tent, or a trick of light that the camera produces ? Reflective guy lines are excellent

It is a great tent for space and gives me more options for moving about. I am enjoying it too. The guy line thing is funny because the reflector effect only seems to show up on the camera (photo and video). In real life they are not illuminated like that, at least not to my eye.

Thank you very much. Yes it is a tight squeeze into my 70l backpack, and I carried the stove bag in my arms. It was quite a mission. I walked very slowly and took my time. It felt well worth it to be immersed in nature and away in my own little paradise. Would do it all again.

Good Evening Cathy .. 👍👍👍 .. another Super one! 😊. Jumping ahead, referring to yourself as 'weak' 🤔. What, with that loadout? No, no, no! All respect to you, Girl .. although, men do tend to have more upper body strength. More of that later .. Me and a load like that? When I wore a younger man's clothes, easy peas. Now, with worn-out suspension .. wrecked knees and aching hip joints .. just a dream. I use a pull-along shopping trolley frame (bag removed) with my large pack strapped to it with an accompanying smaller day pack, when the loads are too heavy or bulky .. gotta move with the times 😁. Our forests are very user-friendly with well-maintained and mostly easy to, travel paths and such. Indie asking for her nosh whilst being furiously wagged by her tail .. methinks, she was also telling you, "Hot tent, hot tent, hot tent .. YAY! 😊. Mulled Wine ('Glühwein' here). When I do not have Honey Whiskey in stock, a 'Glop' of mulled wine into a mug of hot coffee (strong, black, unsweetened .. naturally 😏 and with a pinch of salt to fool the taste buds into believing that there is no 'bitter' taste) .. a Glop' thereof into the coffee gives it 'character'. A SS Hip Flask ensures it's safe transport. Try it some time. The Scoff looked yummy 😋. Splitting that hardwood. Technique, my Dear, technique 😏. It's not 'Squash', but 'Tennis'. From the shoulder and not the elbow .. use the entire arm as the lever and accelerator. It takes some practice to master however, but will be well worth it. In addition, your elbow joints will one day thank you for it. 🤔 ('mulling') .. when I saw that after giving Indie her breakfast, there was an appreciable amount of her food left over .. something that the little grey cells noticed, but passed over. Nevertheless Yes, your 2nd night over was a surprise .. and a pleasant one at that 😊. Thanks for the share and I'm sure that we all are looking forward to you breaking in your new tent (I have a vague suspicion as to what 'may' be, but will for now, hold my peace). Oh yes! Totally agree. I like to camp in the elements (and people seem to engage more with my videos when I do), but I decided that this time around the cold was the only thing I was prepared to tackle. I just needed a camp where I could be dry and comfortable and spend my time relaxing rather than battling.

As a busy mum with 2 kids that is primarily my reason for normally not staying more than 1 night, but when I can it is a treat for sure. Tony and I keep in touch. Yes there is a lot of both on YT. I wouldn't have a clue where people think I fit on that spectrum, but the nice thing is just doing my thing my way with authenticity, and if people enjoy coming with me then that is great.

How much does your backpack weigh? That's a lot of wood when you have natural resources available. It's beautiful where you're camping

That is a very good question. I meant to weigh it but forgot to. The tent and stove are 6kg more than my lightweight hiking tent, my camera gear is closing in on 5kg, and then I packed in some pine kindling in case it poured with rain and all the natural kindling was wet (about 1kg). So my pack was probably 12kg heavier than a standard backpack weight.

Took me 1 hour 15min. Usually is 1 hour with a reasonable pack. I just plodded along. Wasn't too hard going as the track conditions are really good.
