So in other words, late-24th/early-25th century Klingon torpedo boat. The Vor'kang, like the Mogh class is one of those middle-ground cruisers which aren't seen in numbers because most of the Klingon Great Houses want either small birds of prey or giant battleships. It is indeed an interesting design with trying to merge the features of the Vor'cha and K't'inga.

The Vor'Kang holds a special place in my heart vis a vis STO. It was one of the early STO ships. My build was a cannon/turret build with and seriously enhance yaw rate.. not a turn rate but a yaw rate... I developed a tactic of drift fighting with the Vor'Kang that was impressive to my fellow players in the ability to overrun a target and bring the nose around while the ship wa still moving away from a target after overunning it and keeping Heavy disruptor cannons blasting away. Also, its a damn good looking ship!

This lore really works well with the Cold War tech analogies. The Soviets focused very heavily on missile/rocket tech, thus SAMs and beating NATO to space.
@erictheblue7256 Жыл бұрын
Good point, and the Vor'Kang follows Soviet Cold War dogma in another way. The Soviets (understandably, logically) copied western weapons they liked. The Russian Backfire bomber comes to mind, as does the MIG 29 fighter.
@MechanicaMenace Жыл бұрын
I dunno. Looking at that period to me it looks like Russia focussed more on increased blast area and the west focused more on accuracy. Not saying "Federation is the West and Klingons the USSR" is wrong but just the fictional tech divide is opposite the real tech divide.
@FromMyBrain Жыл бұрын
And the Russians kept going on Soviet designs on the shelf.
@DerDrecksack87Ай бұрын
@@MechanicaMenace russia always invested most of its military R&D spending on missile tec to even the field since NATO would have outnumbered their airforce. Even now russian & chinese air to air hypersonics vastly outrange anything the west has by almost 50%, the tradeoff is the immense speed of the missile thus a much more restricted manouverability in tracking and a smaller time frame of going bulldog compared to their western counterparts that have a better hit chance, giving modern aircraft like the F22 or F35 a better chance to break lock & dodge. But in their doctrine it is a good idea, it allows even older aircraft that would be obsolete to fire & return before the opposition is even in range to fire back sending volleys of target seeking missiles to thin the attackers ranks, its always a tradeoff directed at countering each others strenghts.
@MechanicaMenaceАй бұрын
@@DerDrecksack87 I don't personally think you can say that focus lead to them having vastly superior missile tech though. Just different doctrines, focuses, and workarounds for shortcomings. I mean Russia already deploying hypersonics hasn't made them any less worried about or believe they are any more capable to defend against Storm Shadow for example and they're subsonic and 23-30 year old tech. They obviously believe they have some great, in some ways world beating missile tech. But they also obviously don't believe others don't have missile tech that'd stomp on theirs even if it's in different ways.

I’m surprised but nonetheless happy to see a ship chat on the Vor’kang. It is one of those few early STO ships that hold up surprisingly well, like the Mogh, Kurak, Avenger, and Odyssey. I also thought of the Vor’kang as a torpedo cruiser, with its striking similarity to the torpedo Vor’cha. The Klingons definitely were on to something good here. It’s a bit of a shame they didn’t take the idea and run with it. But it is funny that the Klingons saw the Akira and their thoughts were “Starfleet is on to something here but it’s a bit much.” If STO is to be believed and there is another Klingon Civil War, this ship could be a great asset for any houses looking to fight smarter. Maybe this ship in turn inspired Starfleet’s Europa-class, which also seems to boast a heavy torpedo battery.

You can actually see a reflection of philosophies in the weaponry of the various powers. The Klingons favor powerful disruptors and torpedoes that can hammer away with brute force, the Federation sticks to the precise scalpel of adjustable precision phaser beams and variable yield torpedoes, and the Romulans favor plasma torpedoes and precise, but powerful beam weaponry to ensure that a conflict ends at the first strike.

The Vor`Kang can pound above its Weight Class without a doubt, well it depends on the Captain/Commander and his Tactical Genius and Training. Indirect (very long range) fire seems to be something that gets to be ignored in Trek and Sci Fi in general. Strange when how much it's used in modern ground combat, hell even Battletech has it.
@NotQuiteSteele Жыл бұрын
We do see it used in TNG’s The Wounded, where the Nebula was firing on Cardassian warships beyond their sensor and weapon ranges. Granted, the entire battle is described through readouts of the D’s sensors, but that’s just because it’s hard to show a BVR fight on screen. That’s the only example of it I can think of off the top of my head.
@noabsolutelynot36605 ай бұрын
Tbf indirect fire is rendered useless by the absolutely ridiculous long range sensors most federation ships have. Subspace signals simply outpace any weapons they have, even ones used at warp, and there's no horizon or immovable objects to consider. Every ship, even behemoths like the galaxy class, are nimble enough to easily dodge.

A very interesting and compellingly logical video that makes for a terrific discussion upon such a lesser know ship. Certainly seems to a be ship that learns from the lessons of the dominion war in some respects as well as returning to some of the best Klingon ships and technology of the late 23rd century, creating an idea long range accurate torpedo battle cruiser that could be used in hit and run attacks, striking before the enemy knows they are there as well as serving as missile wing held back from the main action in large scaled battles.

I know this isn't the way the Klingon's operate but I could see this ship also being a good one to plug holes in your fleet line Example A group of these ships Use The superior mobility move under cloak to a weak point in your line an attack from long range with torpedo volleys until a Mogh or other ships can Arrive to stabilise the line

The Vor'kang feels like a proper warship, in that it is designed to fill a specific role in fleet actions. However I feel it suffers when used outside it's element, whereas a ship like the Vor'cha (being more of a generalist) can be made to work in a variety of roles outside of an active war.

The bird of prey who fires the torpedoe while cloaked is not an example of a “imporved” or superior torpedoe. It was clear in the movie that it was a case of a superior cloaking device and the wekaness of it was that it required a ton of extra power to maintain that cloak. It was the “extra exhaust” from generating this power that the enterprise crew added a homing sensor onto their torpedoe so it could home in on that bird of prey. But otherwise the klingon torpedoe was just a normal photon torpedoe.

to increase range and accuracy the Vor'Kang can launch a fighter or shuttle that then cloaks and as it passes it's targeting data to the Vor'Kang and after it fires as the torpedoes close in the they switch to the cloaked fighters control and it guides them in to it's target.
