Don't get me wrong, I love to upgrade parts and nerd out on every little bolt but, I totally agree with the ride your damn bike mentality. The bike comes complete, and it totally rideable. Run it into the ground and replace parts as they wear out. I ran gatorskins for years. They are a super durable tire but can get a bit slippery compared to softer rubber if the roads are wet.

I bought a State 4130 All Road in August, and I can't begin to tell you how much I love this bike. It's been terrific and aside from changing out the brake pads, it could not be functioning better (I've put about 1500 miles on it so far this year)!

Agree with getting it assembled at your local bike shop and getting the warranty. I did that and ended up stripping the back axle (being a brute). I contacted them to get some spec info on a replacement axle and they just said they would send me a new wheel. I told them it was my fault and i would just replace the axle but by the time to told them that they already sent me a tracking number for the replacement.They won a customer for life. Ill for sure get another bike from them in the future.

Agreed on the tires. Stock tires even on more expensive bikes are usually bad so just save yourself the few thousand miles to wear them out and get something nice right away.

I bought a secondhand State Core Line Series Single Speed last year. It was originally 44/16 , but the guy had replaced the 16 tooth freewheel with a 24 tooth. It's pretty amazing for the hills around here, but I could probably try a few variations. The experiments are part of the fun. It's got a fixed cog also, but I haven't tried it yet. All that pedalling, lol. Although it's only the basic model, I was quite surprised with the comfort, even with 25mm tyres. I would sure like to try a higher end steel bike at some point.

Single speed rules! I loved my SS cross bike. It's great to jump on and just pedal. I ran a 38x16 but I was running 40s and in hilly Maine. I was gonna ask if you were gonna put aero levers on, but I figured I would wait for the whole video before I asked, glad I did.

I want to ask, right now the black label v2 is on sale for 599. Should I buy it or do you think right now there are better options for that price? Thanks!!!!
@queercyclist Жыл бұрын
I am not sure what other options at that price point are out there so I can’t compare, but I will say I love this bike and still ride it all of the time. I have it dialed for how I like to ride and it’s my go-to around town bike. If you like riding single speed, this is a great option

Solid bike. Ive got the wu tang edition and been ridin it for a couple months now. I def would suggest a tubless setup later down the road
@samanderson13172 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. I love tubeless on my mtb and my gravelbike but on a road bike/ fixie/ ss never. It is a such a small tight hoop that any imperfections in the tyre/hoop it can cause the tyre to blow off the rim. If you think about it the only thing holding your tyre on the rim is air, and going the speeds your going on this bike I rather not risk it. Cheers!

Great review. I was thinking of buying this bike but since it out of stock in almost every shop in EU it's hard to find it. Recently found one shop with 55 and 59 sizes and now don't know what to do coz I'm 180cm (5'11). I used to ride my 4130 Ashton before it crashed in car accident :'( and it was 55. 55 was ok however I had thoughts that might be a slight bigger size is better. Can I ask your height for comparison? May be some thoughts?
@queercyclist2 жыл бұрын
Sure! I'm 181cm (5'11") and I got a size 57cm. I have a long inseam (~32in / 81cm) and this bike fits me like a glove.

Nice new bike (and new digs too!). I built up a single speed recently from a CrMo vintage frame and as many used parts as possible. It was an experiment but it has turned out to be my favourite bike and now I use it for all my short rides around town. It's my cheap, low-maintenance, townie that I'm not too worried about it getting stolen. (Ok actually I am, I am attached to all my bikes no matter how cheap they are). I hope the hoods work out for you, I don't like braking from the tops mostly because of poor steering leverage. I used to ride 28mm tires but can't do that anymore. Anything less than 32 is not comfortable for me. I'm actually running a 33mm cyclocross tire on my build! I had the frame for a few months before I built it as I was looking for a good deal on brake callipers that can fit wide tires while also being compatible with an old frameset. Are you happy with the aluminum frame after riding steel bikes? Personally, I couldn't go back to stiff aluminum after tasting CrMo steel.
@queercyclist2 жыл бұрын
I love that you built up a single speed recently! It sounds like a sweet build. I really like the aluminum. I don’t really compare it to my steel gravel bike because they are two completely different rides. But that said, I do like the aluminum because it’s so light! It is so fast in a way my gravel bike just wasn’t meant for

How do you change the gear ration on a fixed gear bike?
@andrewbrown96722 жыл бұрын
My hands go instantly numb on flatbars. Don’t use flat flatbars. Upgrade to a Jones bar. The angle is everything! Lots of width and many hand positions plus way cheaper shifters when you decide to run it with gears…

That is a sweet looking bike. Congrats! Were there any other bikes you looked at? I've been thinking about getting a endurance road SS bike, but then I remember hills. Their SS CX bike also looks good too.

I looked into getting another Aventon, but they apparently only make ebikes now? I also looked at the Kilo TT but ultimately went with State. I looked other places as well but bikes aren’t so easy to come by these days, and State was the easiest option

Awesome review I have a black label v1 and a 4103 I love them both so much fun. I built up the frames myself. Got the frames from Amazon the black label v1 for $100 and the 4031 for $80 pre covid now its so hard to find frames and part that cheap. I miss the good old days 3 years ago. DAMN YOU COVID🤣

How'd you like riding in Nola?
@queercyclist2 жыл бұрын
It was great! I loved riding there because it was so flat. It’s also where I grew up so I didn’t know anything else at the time. The roads were terrible but most of the time a bike was the quickest way to get around. I still enjoy riding there, but that it’s so flat is weird to me now after living in hilly places for so long
