Did you try clear apoxy? There are different dry times. I think the longer dry time is stronger. There is also a glue called weld bond, I got it at Michael's. But it secures stone to wood and magnets to wood. So may be good for that. Not sure on water proof tho.

Lake superior agates may not be the most famous or expensive, but they are believed to be the oldest agates forming about a billion years ago, and that gives them extra cool points in my book. Watching your video finding them as I sit back and polish some I've found.

Plastic weld it then add the silicone or even a rubber O-ring/gasket type material. Oh shoot, there’s another glue that we use on our jet ski matts and I’m drawing a blank of the name. I knew it! Buckets are made of HDPE and is very difficult to bond. I used 3M DP8005 and worked perfectly. It’s really expensive though. You should be able to make at least 4 larger 5 gal buckets with it though. I highly recommend the deeper bucket. My daughter and I made our first 2 agate hunting videos in a Central MN river recently using the buckets I made. I posted them to this channel. I got lots of shots of us finding them on the river bottom through the bucket.

Cool channel. Just starting watching a few weeks ago. I like your simple bucket design, so I made one myself. But I added some LED strips to it, which helps to make the river bottom more transparent.

Great piece of carnelian at the end. A friend who is a guide on African safaris puts deet on a kerchief that he ties, loosely , around his neck. It works pretty well. He doesn’t want to bathe in poison, constantly. I’m so glad you wade. It makes me crazy when hounders go to the water, then try not to get wet…..exception if it’s 30 degrees…lol

View tube strength idea drill holes around the bottom of the bucket and the edge of the plexiglass then use a water proof putty to seal the inside and out side over the holes make sure to stuff it in the holes, the holes will allow the putty to mold to it self through each hole pretty much stitching it together, or for added strength use zip ties through the holes the putty over and I can almost guarantee that would never break

That little clay concrete on is called “hard pan”. That’s what you hit when the over burden is removed. Top soil, soil, soft clays , then compressed hard pan. Back hoes can scrap it with all the weight pressing, but can’t remove it. It is like clay that has been fired .

I grew up in Anoka County in Minnesota. From age 7 to 13 I collected agates from the creek near our house all the time. Also from the St Croix River and from Lake Kabetogama. (My dad loved fishing so we were always at either one every summer.) I even found them on the dirt road which lead to our house. I kept them in buckets behind the house. I had forgotten about them and when I asked my dad he told me my stepmother threw them out into the driveway before they moved to International Falls. I was 20 something by that time. I went back to the house to see if I could find any, but the city had tarred over our street and driveway. I was heartbroken, but it was my own fault. Thanks for bringing back memories of finding the perfect rock and how thrilled I felt. 🤍🥲 Kid 1: Where are you guys going for vacation this summer? Me: Up North. You? Kid 1: Up North.

Hi Taylor, I’m not sure if this adhesive was suggested to you for your viewtube, but marine grade caulking is something I’ve had success with. It’s not the cheapest mind you
@ademers03 Жыл бұрын
Hey ! For the view bucket: you need something to resist the push of the water upwards. I suggest placing a ring of plastic inside that will act as a lip to prevent the plexi from coming undone inward! :) You can drill on 3 or 4 sides to strengthen it using nuts and bolts. Just make sure you drown them in waterproof silicone! Then your piece of plexi should stay in place with the silicone since there wont be any resistance left pushing on it! Just a thought, someone might have a better idea!
@AgateDad Жыл бұрын
That’s actually exactly what the bucket has. It falls out the bottom because the adhesive gives out
@GalaxieMama Жыл бұрын
Maybe a metal bucket, with the glass soldered on to the bottom would work well for you
@MarkKlingbeil Жыл бұрын
Nice finds. If you cut a circle in the bucket smaller than the bottom, it will leave a lip around the edge. You can seat the plexiglass inside the bucket with adhesive and will never fall out.
@AgateDad Жыл бұрын
So I wanted it on the bottom so the water pressure wouldn’t push it out of the inside of the bucket. If I can get a good adhesive, I should have no issues ☺️

Great hunt! Thanks for sharing! Mind you, I am no expert, but I wonder... if you put some shallow notches in the bottom where the plexiglass goes and a piece of plexiglass that is slightly large, so it just barely fits in, with a little waterproof super glue in the notches and the seal it with something strong and suitable? Maybe someone who is more expert can take this suggestion and run with it too? Anyway, thanks again for sharing and good luck with View-Tube 2.0!

Hello from Iowa...I made a viewer out of a 5 gal. bucket. I call it OSAV (Off-Shore Agate Viewer). OSAV also doubles as a stress relieving word if repeated over and over. I used a 1 gal. ice cream pail to trace on the bottom of the bucket. This leaves about a 1/2" lip all the way around. I cut the plexi so it would fit just inside of the rim of the underside of the bucket and rest on the lip. Note: I mounted the plexi on the underside, not inside the bucket. With the bucket upside down, I layed the plexi in, resting on the lip and fitting inside the rim of the bucket, I drilled 8 small holes through both layers. Be sure to make some alignment marks on the plexiglass and bucket so you can line up the holes again. Take the plexi off and lay a bead of silicone caulk on the lip. I just used a cheap $5 tube from Menards. I also used, I think, 10-24 short round head, slotted nuts and bolts. Put a couple of bolts through opposite holes of the plexiglass and align it with your marks. Drop it down lightly on the caulk that you put on the lip of the bucket. Put the rest of the bolts in and thread the nuts on from the inside and tighten as you would lug nuts on your car. You'll see it starting to compress the caulk. I put the plexiglass on the underside of the bucket, figuring that if I was pressing it down in the water, the pressure wouldn't pop the plexiglass off. The lip will hold it. We were up to the North Shore over Mem. Day and tested it out at Burlington Bay and Flood Bay and it worked GREAT! Plus, if it's a calm day, you can let go of it and it stays upright in the water. It was kinda of neat...I did get comments on it. Had my chest waders on too. I was expecting something like: Mom, look at that dork in the water.

Hi, my wife and I are in Pennsylvania and we travel to northern Minnesota every year to visit her family, and we always spend a couple days on the North Shore. We have had very little luck over the years finding agates at the lake (except for at the Beaver Bay Agate Shop), so perhaps you could disclose the names of some of the creeks and rivers where you hunt for agates. I'm sure you have some "secret" locations which you wouldn't share, but how about some general ideas of where to look? We both love your channel and I hope you will show the rest of the family again. It was neat when you took your son with you. Take care.

That waterline agate is sweet, and I'm REALLY wanting to see what's inside that limonite-stained nodule you pulled up near the end of the hunt - I'm betting that is a beauty! For the viewtube, I'm not sure if you remember the one I showed you when I was up there last summer that I had made for my mother, but on that one, I actually slotted the PVC tube near the bottom and cut the plexiglass to the OUTSIDE diameter most of the way around, so that the plexi circle slid in about a half inch up the PVC from the bottom, like and old ViewMaster reel (I know, I'm aging myself). Then I ran a ring of PVC outside and epoxied it in place then caulked the inside to keep it waterproof. It's a heck of a lot stronger that way and can't be accidentally punched out if she shoves it down into the rocks too hard. I'll send you an DM of it.

Before you even release this video, I wondering how the bucket is working out. I made my own and had to try 3 different adhesives before finding one that would stick to the bucket. The one I found was really expensive but worked great. Silicone and a common 3M 2 part plastic epoxy didn’t work at all. The window fell right out. The buckets I used were made of HDPE and is notoriously difficult to adhere to.
