I went in search of relics; stuck in cracks between cobblestones, in beaches and tunnels and weirs. Scraping, and detecting, (with a pinpointer, and eyes and experience) and giving magnet fishing a try.

Tom, put your mind at ease, you have a lot of fans like myself who watch you for the lovely walks and relaxation your videos provide in this stress-riddled world. I don't mind if you never find anything, I just love to pretend I am there and my bloodpressure noticably lowers watching your great productions. Thank you for sharing these, I always watch in great expectation of the new ones to come out.

@@tomburleigh9261 Thanks! Just had Thanksgiving with my mom and middle son visiting. My mom now lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, so it's only around 5 hours for her to travel instead of the day and a half (or by plane) when she lived in Houston. A Tom Burleigh video? I'll take it. You could read an old telephone book and I'd listen. I really loved the process on this one, first thinking what's with the nails, where are the pretty bottles? Then finding myself mesmerized, as usual, from your narrative. Fish on.

Thanks Artie, for your kind words and generosity. I've been on the lookout for an interesting old telephone book to read for a video... I had one bookmarked on Ebay which had John Lennon's number, Andy Warhols, and loads of other famous Manhattan residents. Sadly, it was expensive, and is sold now... not to me. I'm sure there'll be pretty bottles again before long. 🙂

That reminds me of when the army core of engineers 'turned off' Niagara Falls in the late 60's. They constructed a dam upstream and de-watered the falls for a few months to do erosion control work. Apart from finding the bodies of two people, millions of coins were removed, some of them being hundreds of years old. It's popular to thow in a coin for good luck, or to make a wish, and all those coins add up, especially when many of them are silver. Even old wedding rings are tossed in from marriages that did not last. One of the museums near there has a bowling ball sized clump of coins cemented together by the pressure of the falls. I did hear that the falls will be drained again sometime within the next 10 years to do some maintenance work on the old bridges. I wonder what items (modern or vintage) will be found this time!

Oh wow... that sounds like an awesome mudlarking opportunity. I'll have to get my passport renewed and sign up to a Niagara Falls news site 🙂. Still would probably miss it, but I'd still like to visit Niagra Falls sometime. Thanks for telling me about it.

No problem. Although it did stop flow one other time in 'recent' history. March of 1849 was a particularly cold month. Water started freezing upstream, then floating down and getting stuck near the mouth. There were so many tons of ice that it actually stopped the flow of water for about 30 hours. People in the area though it was end of the world. It's said that a few did venture out found a musket from an early war, but that's an unconfirmed story. Still neat to think what could be down there.

If you come to Niagara Falls, ill host your stay! There are several local falls to see and Letchworth state park is about an hour away- astounding beauty, canyons, falls, hikes, nature etc. And the Erie Canal is a block away from my house. Show up in the spring before it gets filled and come mudlarking in it. :)

Part of the attraction with treasure hunting is the work behind the search. Sometimes not as thought provoking or exciting as finding rare or unusual items. Still makes for an enjoyable video. The chiseling of stone could be fun. I have used wood carving chisels a bit, so it seems interesting to watch and see how stone carves out around the treasures. I did enjoy and appreciate your latest. Thanks

Thanks Victor. I've always tried to include some of the work behind the search, the walk to places, the wandering and looking... never just the: I've just found this approach (only when I've found something without the camera on). I've tried wood carving too, it's something I'll probably do a bit of when I've got the hang of craft videos. The stone Chisels will be used only really in the cracks, breaking up the hardened concretion of haematite and magnetite. 🙂

Thanks Tinkering Twins and Their Mom, I thought it was turning out boring when I was editing, which is why I asked in the round up. From the reaction I've had, I was worried for nothing 🙂. I'll probably be heading back to that stream in Spring, and might try magnet fishing again in a few different places. Happy Holidays to you, and your family.

If you can find them, jewelry makers use pliers that have either a coating or something similar so pliers won’t mark your metal. It might be good for your coin larking. I loved the magnet fishing. My husband and I have thought about doing some. I bought him a magnet. I like the metal larking! The square nails going back to the 1500’s!! Wow!! Amazing. The glass rods were extra cool! How wild to find 2! I loved your handmade pick with the beautiful laminated handle. I have a friend who uses dumpster dived wood pallets to laminate and make furniture. So much of it is from all over the world and makes for different colors! I saw video on You Tube of a young maker who laminated old skateboards, after peeling them. The edge colors were glorious. He used resin to fill the gaps and made sunglasses out of the wood! I look forward to the crafting! Thanks for your video as always!

Thanks Thea, I'm going to try Jewellery maker's pliers next time I go, alongside chisels. I hope you and your Husband do give magnet fishing a go, it's fun, (unless you don't really want to take all the metal, or toss it back). I think I might have seen a similar skateboard laminating video... don't know where I got the idea from. A shame the pick wasn't more useful, but it was good practice making it. 🙂

Thanks Tom , the square chain links are used to strap freight to a pallet with metal or plastic straps / bands kind of a belt buckle thing that the banding is weaved through then pulled tight. hard to explain but I come across them where I work unpacking parts. I hope you're well prepared and keep safe and well during the snowstorm and its wake. Last time there was a snowstorm here, we were left without running water, electricity or internet for 4 days... and couldn't get out for more than short walks as the road was a sheet of ice a mile long. UK doesn't cope well with anything but rain. 🙂

Since 1997 all 1p and 2p coins that have been produced and minted are copper plated which is why they appear rusty and do not last as long in waterways, if you test any 1p and 2p coins minted before 1997 they won't stick to a magnet as they are 100% minted with copper. I've been saving bits of copper pipe and copper pipe fittings from my mudlarking walks along the river Thames for a windchime project. Finding coconuts is a regular occurrence along the foreshore too as these are sometimes placed in the Thames as 'offerings' -I leave these where I find them and let the tides carry them onward on their journey. I never find your videos boring Tom, I always like watching them, the sound of the water, the countryside, the finds and by just watching every single thing..... They are not boring and never will be.

Thanks Maarina. You're very kind, give good information, and I hope I can someday meet up for a lark on the Thames with you. Alas, probably not for while; the Port of London isn't granting licences at the moment but I'll try an be more pro-active about getting one as soon as I know they're granting them again. 🙂

Tom, I believe your glass vials come with a rubber cap with a hole in the center of them. They are for shipping flowers. Water goes in the vial, cap goes on, stem gets put into the hole of the cap. Flowers last longer in shipping. I have had a few of them. Thanks for the experience..

@@tomburleigh9261 I have no idea..but coral shaped horns were to ward off evil spirits. The horn sign which looks like the Rock and roll hand gesture in Italian means f.... off..basically...so never do that to an Italian..but if you point the gesture downwards it also wards off evil spirits...I know..weird..I was taught all the bad language when I was little.
