Be careful, on the island of Chiloe, Al Hansen has already been smashed after rounding Cape Horn from the east. May you begin and end your journey healthy and in a peaceful world. But until then we'll keep watching your videos.

Sven, I made a small contribution and will try to do so as time goes along. I really really believe in your quest. Not only do you have the expertise as a sailor but also as a boat designer, with one of the best concepts for both ensuring success as well as safety. I really have no experience sailing but I’ve always had reservations about normal sail boats because they looked either easy to swamp or to breach. When things get really really bad weatherwise, there seems like there’s nowhere that is weathertight to escape two where is your boat, that is the main concept! What’s more, with your boat I feel that a novice sailor would have so much better chance with whatever he might encounter then with classic designs. Also, thank you very much for including the text of your announcement as at times it is hard for me to understand or know the spelling of certain places - so thank you! Also, I think your quest is absolutely fascinating and I would have to agree with the 50-50 rule because then there is absolutely no contesting the rounding. Anyway good luck Sven and I will hopefully be able to help you more in the future and I encourage others to do the same…

Thanks for the contribution. It helps me a lot. Glad you like my concept. The boating industry like it less as there is much less money in it than big boats.

Sounds like a good plan. I have learned a lot from you over the years. A lot of ideas that go into my designs, I got from you. The one I'm building now, a 3 ft x 10 ft scow, has a bit of Bris III In it. It will have emergency floatation that is made up of 12 repurposed plastic milk jugs which will displace about 3.7 kg each. They will be placed along the sides of the boat, right under the side decks, with the capped ends pointing up. The hull of this boat is 1.25 ft deep. If the boat capsizes, it will be easy to right. Once righted, there will be a great deal of water inside the boat, under the jugs. This provides three characteristics: 1.) The boat will be easy to get back on board, once it's righted. The buoyancy on either side will be less than even the average pre-teen child weighs (only 22.2 kg). Just push that side under, and swim on board. 2.) The water, in the boat, will act as much as ballast, as it will act as a capsizing weight. This is because the stability of the boat will be governed mostly by the the buoyancy on one side multiplied by a little less than half the Beam of the boat. 3.) It will be the water inside the boat, not the flotation jugs, which will support most of my body weight, once I'm back on board. This will be the case until I bail out much of the water. I remember, a long, long time ago, you explaining this idea when discussing the design of BRIS III. As always, I enjoy following your adventures in both voyaging and bot design.

Good luck with the building. Bris III was about 8 meterling twin keeler that never got finished. You may confuse her with Bris IV or Amfibie Bris. Keep building

I'm sorry to hear that you wont be coming to New Zealand, I'd have been very happy to meet you here and help you have a look around our country. As a by the way a friend of mine rounded Cape Horn each way in a Klepper Kayak about thirty years ago. He tells a really good story.

Thanks very much for the hospitality. I had trouble getting visa to Australia from the burocrats and South Africa was to dangerous. It would have been a too long passage for my muscle not to move properly. Up to 180 days. Who knows we may meet somehow. Thanks again Yrvind

@@SvenYrvindExlex Sven, my kayak friend and I were in the Cape Horn area of Chile a little while ago, me as shore support, he as the sailor. He reports that there is a huge increase of kelp in the waters shallow enough to anchor in, giant kelp that makes many previous anchorages untenable as it is not possible to anchor in them and in many places it is so thick that its not possible to sail through it to get to the shore.

@@SvenYrvindExlex Do bear in mind that New Zealand is not Australia, we're very much our own country. It is proposed that in August this year our Covid entry restrictions will be lifted and we will return to normal entry conditions for cruising yachts. From Chiloe to New Zealand is possible, head north to the southern edges of the Pacific trade winds, stop in the Marquesas, Cook Islands or Fiji, and then turn south to New Zealand.

@@jwboatdesigns Thanks for the information. My planned route takes me outside to about lat 43° south, a long way from Cape Horn the Chiloe Island. It is well populated. I do not think I have problems with kelp there.

Great Idea to provision in the Falklands not too far north to 50deg and better weather window timing
@SvenYrvindExlex
@SvenYrvindExlex 2 жыл бұрын
Falkland to Chile is estimated to be 80 days the plan is not to use a weather window but to build a boat that can handle any weather. What I will do is to leave port with faworable conditions and make a landfall in good weather.

Sven, I find odd to have both a centerboard and twin keels, even ir they aré small. You would loose the ability to surf waves either downwind or in case of get caugth by wave by the beam. Derivateur integraux have that advantage, but need nothing below the hull when centerboard Is lift, only remaining rudder and skeg.
@SvenYrvindExlex
@SvenYrvindExlex 2 жыл бұрын
Yacht design is a complex task. The twin keels or rather bilge keels have two important functions, to lower ballast and to safely let the boat take the ground. A boat with astrong bottom can also take the ground but sometimes there are hard stones and other sharp objects also the bilge keels keep the boat a bit up saving the bottom paint. There are disadvatages to my design, but every design do have disadvantages. The thing is to be avare of the chosen disadvantages and be sure that you can live with them.

Are you bringing camping gear. It looks like there are quite a few beaches around Stanley. If you are already above 50 degrees south, why would you need to go back north again. Wouldn't Alan Villiers understand? How will your masts be retained in case of pitch poling. Nice short masts I doubt if they'd break. Thanks Sven-

Seconded. [Walter Cronkite voice-over]: "Now, we interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you live on-the-scene up-dates from our intrepid reporter... someplace in the middle of nowhere. Professor Whirlwind, how are you holding up?" . On the other hand, that introduces complexity to a simple boat. On the other other hand, sponsors would be standing in line for a chance to support a segment of the journey...

@@SvenYrvindExlex In these insecure days there are many boats (Yachts) that have turned their AIS transponders off. Cockpit controlled mast cameras together with strategic placed protected portholes can make your journey much safer. Wish you all well.
