A rough start, quite literally!!

Dear engine lovers fraternity!!
These engines can really make someone be humble by default.
This engine in particular was already EFI but with the first gen analog ECUs. We built a fresh harness and converted it to use Voltarent ECU. We had a rough start where on the first day, it declined to run completely. It would appear as if it's about to start but never starts.
We had removed the first spark plug which was iridium and assumed the rest are the same, shock on us. On the second day, after trying to start it in vain, I thought, why not remove the rest and check their condition.
Well, on this 6 cylinder engine, there were like 4 brands of plugs!!
Since we didn't have replacements, we just cleaned them and the engine started right away. The rest, enjoy the sound!!!

@@PeterMbiria1 if the vehicle is calibrated correctly there will be no draw back on the engine in fact your engine should run better with increased lifespan and lowered maintenance cost as a result of cleaner fuel

its an old engine so my guess is the compression is down. No amount of "tune up" can cure an old engine with poor compression

Compression wasn't the issue. I agree with your last point, it doesn't matter the control system, poor compression will yield poor results!

@@stux1143 well, until you learn that, he built his own ECU from scratch and also wrote the firmware in C++. You don't hear many people who do that.
