Short runway in a northern latitude, marine clime with probable wet or damp runway should register with the pilot as "If one thing goes wrong, TOGA." When he heard the first officer announce, "No spoilers," that was his signal to stop trying to "save the landing." and to either go around or go on to the next long runway.

@@magalirojas8189 1: Turning the engines off is not SOP in an emergency as this on the Bae/Avro. Engines 1 and 4 run the generators powering the AC and DC-buses, while engines 2 and 3 run the hydraulic pumps for the yellow and green system respectively. If you turn them all off you lose AC-electrics (unless you landed with the APU running and the generator on), and most of the hydraulics. The DC-pump in the yellow system will maintain pressure for braking, but the standby generator in the green system will not be able to run, because it needs the 3100-psi system pressure that the EDP on engine 3 produces. Doing this on purpose defeats safety. The emergency systems are there for when things go wrong, but degrading the airplane on purpose is not a good move. And in the end, the engines produce very little thrust on idle. Should it have been of any use to them, it would have to be done immediately upon landing, which is counter-intuitive. snl.no/Stord_lufthamn,_S%C3%B8rstokken Clicking this link takes you to a Norwegian site about the airport in question, but look at the image on the right. It shows the end of the RWY where the aircraft went over the edge. Had they turned hard left, they would have gone over an equally steep edge. To the right was a smaller edge, and maybe they could have saved the day by turning that way. Could it have been prevented by going to the right? Maybe, maybe not.

Wonderful quality simulation as usual! What can a flight crew do in a situation with tight landing margins where a critical, mechanical component involved in stopping the aircraft fails? It almost feels like a betrayal. The spoilers dump lift putting more weight down on the tires and runway so braking is far less effective on landing with the wings still producing significant lift. Landing on a short runway with nothing but rocky cliffs at each end is terrifying in and of itself so the crew and passengers must have become increasingly horrified as the plane rolled on and on. Thanks for a nicely done video. I'm looking t a few issues: 1. The Airport: The airport is in a region prone to cold, damp weather. It rains a lot. Given the short runway, why not invest in grooving it? And why not fill in one side or the other of the runway to provide a "shoulder?" 2. Given weather conditions and a non-grooved runway, turning off the anti-skid (like antilock brakes in a car) was not a good idea. The pilots should have let the brakes work as designed. 3. Another commenter here thought that the pilots should have tried to deploy spoilers a second time and I agree with this. 4. Maintenance: Atlantic Airways was at fault here for not taking meticulous care of the spoilers and flaps. On other aircraft, three systems help you stop. You have reverse thrust, spoilers and flaps, and friction brakes. On a wet runway, reverse thrust becomes very important. On a short wet runway, it's even more important. Hence, if Atlantic chooses to operate an aircraft without reverse thrust, its maintenance crew needs to make certain the other two braking systems (spoilers/flaps and friction brakes) work correctly every time, all the time. Alaska Airlines flies 737s routinely to airports with very short runways (Dutch Harbor) without a problem. The 737 has reverse thrust. It's a bigger airplane that may not be cost-effective for Atlantic Airways' contract, but the margin of safety is better.
@hb1338 Жыл бұрын
Wild speculation. There is NO evidence that the inspection and maintenance of the aircraft was faulty. My road car has anti-lock brakes - in wet or slippery conditions (e.g snow), they are much less effective than manual braking because they are unable to cadence brake.

Another example of the fire causing the death of people onboard. I don’t think the crash of an aircraft causes the fatalities in 99% of the time. In nearly all cases it’s not being able to get off the plane in time to escape the fire.

Again, I’m so impressed with the quality of your videos. Much improved over the years. I like to think of myself as computer and MSFS savvy, but I can’t figure out how you got a close detailed view of the main landing gear from the rear like that. Bravo!

@@Capecodham Well, on planet reality, normal people have heard of Microsoft Flight Simulator and commonly use the four letter acronym. The video you watched here is made from it. It doesn’t take an elite to figure that out. Even kids know what it means.

@@LBCORP1960 I was in a group of kids, as a teacher known knew. Do you realize not every viewer of this channel is not a Sully like you. I doubt if Sully were here, he would be so hip and cool as you. using aircraft acronyms. He would understand as smart as he is, he would not try to show up others using terms like CVR,CRM, GA. EFB, TOGA, FO. But you are not him you need to prove what you know. That type of person is known as a know it all or smart ass.

This might be orthodox but em I the only one who was thinking the whole time DEPLOY the emergency exit raft, do create an air drag and stop the airplane.
@rchrd_sn Жыл бұрын
No expert here, but if a simulation proved impossible to stop the plane if the runway was damp, and also considering that they landed nearly 10% faster and a little late and no spoilers, I don't see how much better the crew could have done in those 23 seconds. It's just incredibly unlucky to cross the end of the runway into the fall at just 5 knots or less. The only measure they took in the right direction as if just wanting to make sure was to get three reds and one white on the PAPI, which would allow them to touchdown early, but upon the touchdown, they seemed to have flared for too long, totally nullifying that measure.

Even if the spoilers failed, why did the brakes not work either?
@johnshields6852 Жыл бұрын
All I hear is excuses, you never know how a pilot will react to adverse situations, many never have to, but when they arise some pilots act very poorly, I would think you'd want to use all your braking capabilities immediately after touchdown, not 6 seconds later, I would let some of these pilots drive my car, let alone a passenger aircraft.

I have over a thousand hours and built an award-winning experimental aircraft. In all my 40 years of flying I can never recall waiting 6.6 seconds after touchdown before applying the brakes. And the pilot should initiated the aggressive swerving way earlier. This accident was avoidable.

I am not a pilot, just curious to learn. Wouldn't it have been useful to raise the landing gear so that the plane dragged down the runway?
@deepthinker999 Жыл бұрын
Apparently once making contact the landing gear cannot be raised. See above for details.

I know its being Monday morning qb but just wondering if all else fails could they just raise up landing gear on nose and try to slow it down as much as possible or is that much weight and needs to be off ground to raise up landing gear? Im no expert but just curious if that's the last resort before u go off a embankment. Prayers to everyone it effected

Why were the air brakes in the aft of the airplane not activated (inop?)
@roberthoffhines5419 Жыл бұрын
not the ending I was hoping for. I wonder if steering off onto the soft unpaved area would have mired the wheels and stopped it any sooner. Maybe more violently I guess where you still get the fire in the end.

Is it not possible to create some kind of stop mechanism at the end of runways in general? Similar to the nets at aircraft carriers. If not a wall of some sorts made of a sturdy material like a supported tire wall like at race circuits. I understand planes are a much heavier moving mass but with today's ingenuity it should be possible. In this case the plane went past the runway at only 10-15 kmh and could probably have been stopped by such a wall or other. So what is the reason for not having something like this?
@Fastvoice Жыл бұрын
Yes - such systems exist. E. g. some kind of kitty litter where the plane can decelerate quickly (similar to run-off-zones on racetracks). But you need a lot of space and money for this. Just google "Runway End Safety Area". OTOH: A wall would not be the solution - too much kinetic energy to absorb in a small distance.
