It was a routine takeoff for Emery Worldwide Flight 17, a domestic cargo plane making its way to Ohio, on February 16, 2000. Seconds later, that illusion was shattered as the plane began to violently tilt and rotate.

On February 16, 2000, the DC-8 crashed onto a salvage yard shortly after taking off from Sacramento Mather Airport, killing all 3 crew members on board. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that during the aircraft's rotation, a control rod to the right elevator control tab detached, causing a loss of pitch control. The crew attempted unsuccessfully to return to Sacramento airport. The NTSB further found that an incorrect maintenance procedure, which was implemented by Emery Worldwide, introduced an incorrect torque-loading on the bolts which were supposed to connect the control rod.

The cause: The right elevator tab detached during take-off as a result of an incorrect maintenance procedure implemented by Emery worldwide. The FAA found more than 100 maintenance violations by the airline, including one that caused another accident in 2001, Emery permanently grounded their entire fleet and ceased operations that same year.

I was working at the Emery Hub in DAY that night. It was sorry shift to work. A lot of us knew the Flt crew (particularly George). A flight engineer that came in later, and who I flew all over the world with (USAF), was devastated and I ended up taking him home with me, as the ATL aircraft went down for maintenance and his crew rest period expired. All the flt crews left at the Hub went out on the East ramp and stayed there until all the flights went out. There was a question of a container shifting to the rear (lock problem) and causing the COG to cause the nose up. interestingly enough, the parking lot that they crashed into had just held a discount car auction a couple of hours before they lifted off. it was the beginning of the end. the investigation was not kind to maintenance but management was not blameless. I left Emery ( Menlo Logistics, and untimately UPS AFTER they bought us from Menlo) in 2016. Some things from 17, I believe, were buried in a time capsule in the HUB. Don't know what happened to that either. Emery was a GREAT company to work for early on, not so much later. but still have some friends in the local area.

“The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its final report in 2003, three years after the accident. The report stated that the crash of Flight 17 was caused by the detachment of the right elevator control tab. The disconnection was caused by the failure to properly secure and inspect the attachment bolt.[5] The NTSB then added: "The safety issues discussed in this report include DC-8 elevator position indicator installation and usage, adequacy of DC-8 maintenance work cards (required inspection items), and DC-8 elevator control tab design. Safety recommendations are addressed to the Federal Aviation Administration".” It wasn’t a load shift.

If I recall right, there was an incorrect setting of the straps that held the cargo containers in place, resulting in a shift of the cargo. The effect was like trying to hold a tray steady when laden with water. A shift in one direction caused an unbalance which when corrected caused an even worse inbalance in the opposite direction. They were given no chance to survive.

This accident was caused by the right control rod for the elector becoming detached. I was offered a job by FedEx to fly freight, but decided I liked flying people better. I always thought that flying freight in those days was risky because we didn't have the types of containers that we do today and the loadmasters weren't as educated in weight and balance as they are today. The freight had really nothing to do with this crash, but Emery's maintenance systems and procedures did.

Silly, lazy comment. Had nothing to do with the age of the plane. Do some research.

I assume the ending went like this... While they're fighting to regain control of the aircraft, the engineer pressed a button and opened the cargo door. That's when D.B Cooper jumped out with a parachute. The plane started working correctly and they landed, but a tire burst, so they had to drift into the gate with excellent precision?

I once had a "weight and balance" problem that caused me to crash. My date said she weighed 260 - but she lied! I lost control of my truck and rolled it in a ditch. You just can't trust people!

The report stated that the crash of Flight 17 was caused by the detachment of the right elevator control tab. The disconnection was caused by the failure to properly secure and inspect the attachment bolt.
