No, it's not. The Atlanta Highway is the road to Atlanta from Athens. Kate Pierson lived in a tiny shack (without running water or appliances) outside of Athens that she rented for $15 per month [It was later destroyed by arson]. But the song isn't about that shack or any specific shack. It's a mythical throw-down, down-home, disco juke joint in the rural South, according to Kate Pierson.

The meaning of the three-word line Tin roof rusted has been pondered by many, but Pierson said there was no hidden meaning. “There’s been wild speculation about what ‘tin roof rusted’ means, and there was a rumor that it meant you were pregnant … or you were drunk … people were like, What does that mean? Well, it’s just literal, in Georgia, there were a lot of cabins, my house outside had a rusted tin roof because it was a funky old shack. $15 a month.”

@@douglasfrantzen3011 Sort of hate to say it, but too many people tried to make something out of nothing. Especially about hidden meanings in music back in those days. I doubt many songs that have connections to hidden meanings from back then were actually intended to be that way. Many bands let it ride until later on when they aged and told their side of what was so. Yet people don't want to believe them. lol So they say, "F--K It" if that's what they want, give it to them.

@@bertpainter8385 Reminds me of an story I heard from my University. At Dies Academicus (A day for high school kids to visit the University and attendance at lectures) a literature professor gave a lecture about a chapter in a book where the hero walks at a foggy November day over a cemetery and watched the ravens flying around. Analysing the chapte r to the deepest meaning about life and death, the sense of existance yada yada yada. From the back of the autditorium one person asked "Couldn't it be that the author only walked over a cementary, saw this situation and wrote it down - Without deeper meaning?" The professor then answered that this is impossible and the person who asked should re-think if he would study literature because he didn't get it. The person than stands up and said - May I introduce myself? - I'm the author of the book and Nobel Price of Literature winner. And Yes I walked over a cementary and only wrote down my impressions of the scenery.

@@douglasfrantzen3011 - Cindy ad-libbed it - the most likely meaning is that it was rhyming slang for busted. Within the context of the song it is proceeded by loud banging on the door (by the cops). So it's likely to have just been a joking reference about the cops breaking up the party over noise complaints, weed whatever. That interpretation fits with the lyrics and makes sense as a off the cuff ad-lib. Cindy said she doesn't even remember what she was thinking when she sang it so it was never meant to be significant just a joking ad-libbed line. Cindy was asked about it meaning "busted" once and laughed and said that sounded about right indicating she understood the reference but couldn't be sure if thats what she meant at the time.

@@toddbell6989 - Actually that's sort of cart before the horse. I'll explain - people didn't know what ti meant and someoen decided it was code for pregnant and then it sort of became that to some people. While never confirmed it's likely to be rhyming slang for being arrested - if you listen tot he sequence there's bang bang banging on the door followed by the line "You're Tin roof rusted" which rhymes with You're busted. Rhyming slang has traditionally been used to obscure illegal activities and the lyrics of the song indicate some of those might be occurring. It was an ad-lib line by Cindy and even she says doesn't really know what it means because she was just riffing. It was written in rural Georgia and could simply be referring to the roof of the building that Love Shack was written about (I believe Kate lived there for a time).

Actually she was asked if it was rhyming slang for "busted" and laughed and said that sounded about right. She just riffed the line during recording and they structured that part of the song around it because they liked it. So busted would make sense with the cops bang bang banging on the door. Honestly it makes sense with the pregnancy interpretation too but that meaning seems to have come from the song rather than being in existence before it and it's likely to be a joke about Cops breaking up the party but she honestly cant remember what she was thinking when she jokingly sand the line.

@@alphaomega7191 , I'm going to say yup to what you said and thanks for the clarification. gotta be real---a lot of life has happened between when that song came out and I heard that story to today. LOL Ya know? So, thanks for clearing it up.

@@Z-LightfulMemories - No worries. It's funny we all want to read deeper meaning into things like seeing patterns in clouds but honestly a song like Love Shack probably doesn't have a lot of deep hidden meanings. I think people took a joking riff from Cindy and just sorta ran with it.

Fred Schneider had a habit of writing truly suggestive lyrics, for example his late 80s solo song "There's a Monster in My Pants." The "tin roof, rusted" line even though it came from Cindy is heavily suggestive that his gal is on the rag which would explain his shock if it was a place to go to hook up while the term "get down" many times referred to sex in the 70s and 80s. My friends and I may have read too much into it, but it seemed to make sense to us.

It's a song from the 80's about a place from the 70's, just outside Athens, GA. Just a place to hang out and dance and drink and carry on, and there were lots of 'blue laws' in Georgia then that limited drinking and getting together--no drinking after midnight until the early 80's, no buying alcohol at all in stores or bars on Sunday, etc. I'm sure there were countless hookups at this place, but mostly it was just a little club or permanent house party that people could go to and have fun, whatever form that took.

80s and 90s pop rock was heavily influences by the idea of getting on MTV, when they actually showed music videos, so often the meanings are in a mixer of both song and video. Was funny watching this reaction without the video because it never really occurred to me that it had so many sexual references 😂🤣

It’s just friends getting together to party, dances and have fun. Banging on the door could be the front door .. get your minds out of the gutter. The love is the love you have for other people and to have fun.

He can't. He doesn't FEEL music if it's not rap/hip hop. He can only connect to a song through the lyrics in an analytical manner. Lex is the complete opposite. She FEELS the music without having to find meaning and interpretation. I'm sensing autistic vibes from Brad.

The b-52's should not be taken seriously. That being said they have two separate handfuls of very cool songs including this one. They are another one of those groups that had two separate careers. They started out in the 70's and two of their big hit were "Rock Lobster." And "Your living in your own Private Idaho." Then they pretty much disappeared until the late 80's when this came out. And they had another handful of hits. I particularly love "Good Stuff' Later era and "Lava." Earlier era. Both songs are singing about the same thing. Basically, that thing is produced when a man and woman get together. LOL.

Lex is hilarious!! This is just a silly catchy fun song, nothing to dive into and I don't think there is any deep meaning to it. It sticks in your head though, and that's probably what it is meant to do.

The 80s surely were different times. As teenagers a bunch of us got in a car and used to go rural bar hopping (18 was the drinking age back then, lol). We had some of the best of times in those places and left lots of quarters on the pool tables and jukeboxes. Most of the folks were old pple and very welcoming to a bunch of crazy kids looking to have some safe fun. We even gave funny nicknames to some of these places. One we called 'The Coco Loco' because of the amazing coconut/whiskey drinks made with fresh coconuts. Another one we named it, you guessed it! 'The Love Shack' because it was by the beach in a very romantic setting. Brad, for me this song doesn't need to be about sex but about a bunch of good friends going out to some dinghy place in the middle of nowhere and having the greatest of times without a care in the world. Again, need to watch the video.

It’s not actually sexual, it’s about inclusiveness. Black white gay or straight! It’s accepting everyone. In the 80’s we weren’t so skeptical. It was a fun sons! Get ya mind out of the gutter ❤️

My ex wife went to a small college outside of Atlanta and her and her friends drove the "Atlanta Highway" the state road that went to ATL, she showed me the love shack a small club that everybody went to drink and dance when she was in college in the 80's. It was long closed when I saw it.

This was a college alternative band that had a couple hits in 79 and 80, then this was their comeback in 89. 4 songs from this album did pretty well. You've probably heard " roam if you want to" from 1990
