A's DITCHING Elephant branding, mascot in Sacramento?

With the Athletics starting their temporary stay in the Sacramento area next March, that means a new mascot will join others that represent sports teams in the Capital City region.
Say hello to A’s mascot Stomper, a 6-foot, 6-inch tall elephant that weighs “a ton of fun” and has delighted fans with his silliness and dance moves since the late 1990s. He’ll temporarily share a home with Sacramento River Cats mascot Dinger.
Before Dinger welcomes Stomper to his new digs, the friendly elephant has already explored Sacramento in the team’s social media schedule release video, visiting sights such as the Crest Theatre, the Old Sacramento Waterfront, the Tower Bridge, and Capital Books.

Small correction. The team kept the elephant the first few years in KC. Finley took over in 1960. And that's when he made the changes. Not in 1955.

This week they visited Sutter Health Park and the King's game. They also visited some local schools and Stomper was present. As a kid I remember seeing Charlie O the mule at A's games!

I love Stomper❤! He is the cutest mascot. One of my favorite memories at an A's game is taking my mom to the Breast Cancer Awareness day and having several pictures taken with Stomper. He made us laugh with his antics and he made my mom feel special. I really hope this was a mistake by fanatics, like they did with the really bad jerseys in 2024.

Maybe a city like Orlando or something like that, a city/market that's still desirable, but not in the market that one of those teams should be at.

With MLB already allowing sponsor ads on team jerseys, could be that this is just another indicator of this trend leaguewide to prioritize space for it... of course, that subject in of itself could be it's own video lol. In any case, I agree with you 100%, Brodie. If they're gonna abandon something that's so integral to the team's history & identity - never mind just Oakland, but the franchise as a whole - then they should just go full turkey and re-brand all together. All the bad press & PR around the move to Vegas has tainted the A's brand anyways, might as well throw lipstick on a pig and start fresh with a new name, colors, and logos to help distance themselves from all that. I'm sure the new fans in Vegas would appreciate having an identity that they can call as their own, and at least Oakland fans could take some small measure of solace in knowing that the A's name will "stay" - or I guess more accurately, die - in Oakland. It's a no brainer win-win - but of course, leave it to this ownership to screw even that up...

I'm neither American nor an A's fan but I love baseball and think the elephant logo is one of the best in mlb. I really hope this is some kind of oversight and ownership do not abandon a great symbol of the teams storied history stretching all the way back to Connie Mack and John Mcgraw. They should be proud of that logo and disply it prominently.

When the Athletics moved to Sacramento, they should have left the green and yellow as that is Oakland’s colors not the team’s originally. It should be black and white, as they are temporarily located in Sacramento, and Las Vegas.

I get your point, but you’re speaking as a fan. When it comes down to it, it really is up to whomever owns the team. When the Senators and Expos moved, they consciously made the choice to rebrand as the Twins and Nationals, respectively. When the Dodgers and Giants moved, they correctly thought that their brand was too strong to change. As a Rams fan, I wasn’t happy about my childhood team becoming the St. Louis Rams, but the LA fans really had no say in it. As inept as Georgia Frontiere was, it really was her call at the end of the day. A similarly inept John Fisher is the one who can do with his “toy” as he wants.

The elephant has been part of the athletics since they were in Philadelphia. The reason they use the elephant was because John McGraw of the New York Giants called the Philadelphia athletics a white elephant. So Connie Mack adopted it as the mascot for the athletics. That was back when the American League just started and it was rivalry between the National League, which was the established league versus the American league, which was the new upstart, but this owner of the athletics is the worst owner, possibly they’ve ever had and why would he ever keep the tradition that goes back 120 years. My grandfather was a Philadelphia athletics fan. Being originally from the Philadelphia area I’m a Phillies fan but my favorite American League team was always athletics because of their to Philadelphia and my grandfather. Actually surprised the Uniforms will have the complete name of Athletics. Seems John Fisher could have just gone with the A's on road grey and home white with perhaps a throwback Gold top. Considering the prices for tickets it may be difficult for real fans to bake in the Summer sun in Sacramento. What are the TV and radio plans if any? Will Jenny return or will the secret be revealed at some future event. I have followed the club from the days in Kansas City and this is a terrible way to leave a storied legacy behind like an pile of elephant dung. My dad and I were there when Charlie O the mule came on the field before the games

I've long believed every city with a sports team should demand that the franchise's name and logo belong to the city. If you want to move, you can take your organization, records, etc. But you have to leave the identity behind. The fans deserve nothing less.

The culprit here might be: a recent trend in todays era where artists and graphic designers are more commonly lawyering up and getting their work monetized WHICH MEANS teams often have to abandon logos they have been using for decades (see: Philly Phanatic)
