I happened upon your lovely videos of train and bus in the Mayo area today. Thank you for your visuals and your commentaries. My grandmother was from Ball in Mayo. I have studied the area a lot. And have been to Ireland twice; but years ago. But your videos shoeed me what it looks like in 2024. Many thanks.

As a student many moons ago I got a summer job surveying road bridges in Co. Mayo. I was put up in Westport and spent about two weeks spending my days on that road to Leenane, and my evenings in Matt Molloy’s pub. The rest of my career hasn’t lived up to that summer job!

Very nice video again Johnny. The dead end construction hoarding you ran into in Westport is due to works on Hotel Westport which is connected to the Westport house estate. The owners are pumping millions into the estate and plans include an impressive visitor experience dedicated to the legendary local pirate queen Grace O’Malley. Perhaps you will return some day to see it all and eventually complete your intended greenway trip to the quay.

you are very welcome! I have a whole series of Ireland videos on the playlist (with more to come). I would say that my best advice is to use both the buses and the trains in Ireland. If the train is going where you want to go, they are generally more comfortable and often a little faster. Also, if you book in advance they can be cheaper too! Meanwhile the bus will get you to places where the train just doesn't go. I would strongly advise you also look at Interrail/Eurail passes, especially for the UK. Our trains can be very expensive and Interrail/Eurail can be an excellent way of making them affordable and flexible. In the UK pass users need not make prior reservations to travel, but if you wish to make seat reservations (to ensure you get a seat!) they are free. It is Interrail (if you are from EU/Europe) and Eurail if you are from the rest of the world. The passes are pretty much identical and great value. Also, if you pay the little extra for a 1st Class pass you can often get extras like free drinks and food and snacks in the UK. And, of course, thank you so much for watching 👍
