You got to give Stan some credit, because despite being a Highschool dropout he was still able to figure out how operate Ford's portal machine the instant he got all three journals. He must have spent years going over the only one he had ready for if he ever got the other two
@notcarbuncle1493
@notcarbuncle1493 2 ай бұрын
Well, he probably spent 20 years pouring over the one and trying to get it to work, thinking he was just dumb, and learning a bunch of theoretical physics over and over, so by the time he got the other 2 it clicked faster

I don’t know whether this is a good theory or not, but I like to imagine that Stan has always had the potential to be as smart as Ford, but he was just never motivated until he lost his brother. Once he had all 3 books it really didn’t take him long to get the portal up and running

If you watch during the part of the flashback where Stan is standing in front of the mirror, you can see a slowly increasing pile of science and physics books to the side. He spent a lot of those 30 self teaching himself so he could figure out how to operate the portal.

"Untill you make us a fortune you're not welcome in this household!" They never bring attention to it in the show, but from the first time I watched this episode I always thought how crazy it was that it probably gave him that obsession with money, even nowadays when he's not trying to give anything to his dad or get back to his house, it just sticked with him

My favorite foreshadowing will always be the boat Stan takes the kids to go fishing in episode 2 of season 1 being named Stan O' War. That's straight up insane foreshadowing

@@anothermiddleschoolburnout8816 I noticed that license plate in episode 2 as well, and naturally assumed that "Stan" was short for "Stanley". When I kept watching, and everybody kept referring to him as "Stanford" I just thought that this was a little oversight in the production design: either the background painter had wrongly assumed Stan's full name, and nobody corrected it until it was too late, or alternatively, Stan was originally supposed to be named "Stanley", but the writers changed their mind and renamed him, the first time his name was spoken aloud. I had _no idea_ how twisty and deep the real reason behind the mismatch would turn out to be.

So, you've learned the Stans' backstory. With that in mind, let's travel back in time... • Grunkle Stan always knew from the start that Gideon was a charlatan psychic. Of course, if he really were psychic, he would have known not to call him Stanford. • Stan's comical reactions to his wax statue in "Headhunters" now have the new context that he actually did have a twin whom he hasn't seen in 30 years. • In the "Abaconings" short story, Mabel is worried that the super-intelligent Waddles is going to leave her to pursue ambitions of changing the world; ultimately, Waddles chooses to stay with Mabel. Grunkle Stan was the one telling this story; perhaps this was some wish fulfillment for a man whose brother chose to actually leave. • Ever find it odd that the Mystery Shack has so much weird stuff that Stan didn't seem to know about, like the copier or the carpet? Well, of course that makes sense now: it used to be someone else's home and research center.

this episode cements stan as my favourite character. despite being kicked out of the house for a mistake, despite not having finished high school, despite never having gone to college, despite spending 10 years on the run from the law and frantically trying to make enough money to be worth it to his father, he is able to fix an interdimensional portal to bring his brother home. 30 years looking for and decoding the journals, scrounging for parts, learning complicated math and tech stuff on his own, and he accomplishes it. that's incredible.

JK Simmons knocks it out of the park with Ford. I get so giddy every time I rewatch this episode and he starts narrating about gravity falls and creating the journals. They honestly do such a great job with Ford. He's not in that many episodes, but I feel like I've known him from the start because the author has been such a big character throughout the series. We got to know him through Dipper and Mabels adventures, and when we finally met him it's like we'd known him all this time. And I feel like we also know him so much through Stan. Anyway, Ford is a top character for me. I really really love him and think he's the heart of the series.

I think that the thing that screwed Stanley over most was just how terribly he responded when Ford confronted him. He did not at any point even try to explain that it was an accident and that he thought he fixed the machine. Instead he downplayed and made it sound like it was 100% intentional

the thing is i feel for stan cause everything he ever did was to stay with his brother, the one person who believed in him and cause of stupid highschool mistake after finding out he was gonna be b possibly without his best friend he lost everything, had no means of money so he scammed and got chased around the world to make a fortune just for the hope of his family believing in his again and then your brother who hasn't spoken to you for years asks a favor of you after 10 years, a lifetime of going to prison and barely making ends meet. id be pissed to. they were both in the wrong and they are both why ford ended up in the portal. ford was so upset he lost sight of family in his research and stan chased money all his life for his family to forgive him.

The origin of bill (From the book of bill Valley of ashes) Once there was a triangle his name was billy. Billy lived in a flat world. it was peaceful. HOWEVER.... Billy was special, He could see past the bounds of his world and see... ✨The stars✨ As years passed, Billy grew distant from his peers. His vision got clearer & clearer every day. *IT. WAS. AGONY* Noone could understand what he meant by "stars" and "space". He was disconnected, *_Untethered_* . _BUT_ Billy had an idea, He just has to change their *P E R S P E C T I V E* . There were no more stars. _Only ashes_ .

When this episode comes around, there's always some Stanley stans in the comments, saying "He didn't _mean_ to ruin Stanford's exhibit! It was a _total accident_ that he just happened to be innocently passing through the closed school hall at night (as one does), and _coincidentally_ started screaming and making increasingly violent gestures at the physical manifestation of his brother's greater talent and chances in life. He covered it up and didn't mention it to his brother, just like any other innocent person would do, when they did nothing wrong. Stanford is a _bad brother_ for not instantly forgiving Stanley and immediately doing what _he_ wanted, instead of having a college career. No, of course Stanley didn't have to apologise or show the slightest bit of remorse. That's just crazy talk." The fact the we've come to know and love Grunkle Stan over the course of the series _completely_ blinds them to his faults and causes them to irrationally shift the entire blame for what happened onto Stanford, painting him as the "evil twin" for not immediately doing whatever Stanley wants, whenever he wants it. Yes, of course it's heart-breaking to see Stanley get his hopes up, when Stanford refers to their old dream of sailing around the world - but how _incredibly, _*_apocalyptically_* self-centered would he have to be, to get his hopes up in the first place, after what he did, and never once apologising, let alone doing the slightest work to make up for it or redeem himself? Stanley has the gall to call _Stanford_ "selfish" for "hoarding his college money", apparently believing that it was Stanford's _duty_ as a brother to embezzle money from a research grant to just… _hand over_ to Stanley. And there's a certain contingent of _Gravity Falls_ fans who are nodding along to this and saying, "Yeah! How _dare_ Stanford fail to commit crimes for his deadbeat, scam-artist, sociopathic brother! What a terrible villain he is!" All of which is not to say that Stanford is blameless. His arrogance and pridefulness make him refuse to destroy the portal and his research notes on it. He's too prideful to give up the work he's done, even when it presents a clear and present danger to the entire world! Stanley is entirely right when he tries to burn the journal, instead of following Stanford's hare-brained scheme of sailing of and burying it somewhere. Sure, Stanford was more than halfway around the bend from sleep deprivation and paranoia, when he came up with that gem of a plan, but the arrogance and pride that motivated him in the first place were not a product of his momentary state - those were there all along, and they continue to be, in future episodes.

I think Stanley has many many faults and was jealous of his brother, but I guess I'm with the Stan stan's on this one. (Except for the part about the college money, you're right to criticize him there.) It was an accident. Being jealous is not proof he somehow unconsciously destroyed it on purpose. But more important his family's reaction was extreme. His parents disowned him and his brother went along with it. Even if he had done it on purpose that was way too far. But also it turned out he didn't really harm Stanford's life. Being a rich inventor was his parents dream. Stanford wanted to study anomalies, which he did. The idea we should feel super bad that he went to this college that allowed him to pursue his dreams instead of XYZ "better college" to do it is kind of peek snobbery. If you're a successful and happy person who went to "New Jersey Institute of Technology" in Newark rather than Princeton are we supposed to feel bad for you? I mean maybe a little for the initial disappointment, but lots of people don't end up in their dream college. Who Stan owes an apology to is the people he defrauded and gave rashes. (There are better ways to get rich and at some point he should have decided hurting others to win back the parents who disowned you is not worth it.) And maybe also to lazy Susan for causing her eye thing and then having the temerity to be rude to her about it on their one date. In fact his relations to women in general are pretty shabby. And I could see an argument he sometimes takes advantage of Soos's devotion to him. But when it comes to his family I think he has very little to apologize for to be honest.

Oh dear, you gotta read the books (also the book of Bill), they give a lot of depth of how Ford was on those times. Literally he was enamoured with Bill (with the whole my muse), also reading the disadvantages of seing Stanley makes it even worse. Anyhow, they give the context of how he was, also that he didn't communicate at all with their parents, the one that did was ironically Stanley. The lore of the books is worth the time
