This is what is called a "Check Sum" or a " Check Sum Digit" and it is exactly what you said it was, a way for the computer to know if the numbers were entered correctly. However, not all credit card numbers will have a Check Sum of "0". That would eliminate the vast majority of 16 digit numbers that could be used.

Just a pet peeve on notation: At 1:07, Presh writes the mathematical equivalent of a run-on sentence. Everything was fine up to that point...1+3+5+7+8+0+0+0 does, in fact, equal 24. But then he multiplies by 2 to get 48. The resulting chain of equalities says 1+3+5+7+8+0+0+0 = 24(2) = 48 or 24 = 48. Seems like a small thing, but I see this trip students up all the time.

The 16th digit, called the "check digit", is a calculation based on the first 15 digits. There's some funky arithmetic and modulus division (by 11) used to determine it. I didn't know about this video's method of verification - cool. By the way, it only catches single-digit errors (i.e. one can have two errors and pass the test, where one error happens to "offset" the other).

There’s also a checksum code for the DEA Drug Enforcement Administration number on prescription pads, to deter faked prescriptions for addictive drugs. I never allowed my own DEA number to be printed on my prescription pads; I always called the pharmacy and explained that a deliberately incomplete prescription was being brought in and that it was legitimate. That protocol worked very well.

Actually, it means that there no 2 cards with neighbor numbers. Moreover, all valid card numbers differ in 2 or more digits. So, when your are going to make transaction, if you make a mistake in 1 digit - nothing bad happen, because this card number does not exist. But if you make a mistake in 2+ digits, there is only 10% chance that it is a valid card number.

Here's a guaranteed simple 4 step method: • Drop the last digit from the number. The last digit is what we want to check against • Reverse the numbers • Multiply the digits in odd positions (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) by 2 and subtract 9 to all with a result higher than 9 • Add all the numbers(odd positioned results and untouched even positioned numbers) together • The check digit (the last number of the card) is the amount that you would need to add to get a multiple of 10

Another secret is the first number of a card is what brand it is. 4 is Visa 5 is MasterCard 3 is American Express 6 is Discover/Diners Club The first 6 numbers on Visa and MasterCard are the institution that issued it.

There's a flaw in the way you explained the doubling step. You're supposed to list the odd position digits (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.), double them, add together any two-digit doubles, then add the even position digits (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) to those. You tried to simplify this step with the "add one for every digit of five or more" step, but it doesn't work consistently.

I think the code in drivers license numbers are even cooler. Maybe not all states have them but I know WI, IL, and FL do. Your first, middle, & last initial are coded into the number...the last initial is obvious because it starts the whole DL#. And the numbers immediately after it are a code that gives you an idea to its pronunciation. The other initials are determined by a code that you can look up. The year of birth is in plain sight. And the month and day are a basic equation. So if the number was J300-7287-9338-10 you'd know the last name starts with J and they were born in 1979...the last # of the second sequence and the first # of the next is 7-9. And the 338 is September 18th...(month-1)*40 and then add the day which in the example is 18. Its possible for people to end up with the same number so the last 2 digits indicates the difference. So since its 10 you know there's at least 9 other people who have the same DL# and you were the 10th. The different states have different equations and codes so unless your DL is from WI this example I gave won't work.
