That's right. The machine to check the TPMS is expensive, the sensors are expensive, wake up the sensors is expensive, sync the sensors with the car computer is expensive. I just ignore the light on the dash and check the tire pressure myself.

@HR-wd6cw
@HR-wd6cw 3 жыл бұрын
Scotty forgot to mention a few important things... 1.) Check the label on the driver's door frame to see what pressure you should be running before you go and check all the tires (if you're not sure or this is your first time checking the tires since getting the car). Most passenger cars are between about 35-40 psi. Always go by what's on the car's sticker, NOT what's printed on the tire. Assuming you bought the correct sized tires with the correct speed rating, you should be fine. On some heavier vehicles (like trucks) I have added about 1-2 PSI to the front tires to help with steering but you don't want to go overboard. Also check your tires when they are COLD. The pressures listed on the door jam are cold tire pressures. You're tire pressure will probably increase by about 5-10 psi when hot but that is normal (for those who are new to checking tire pressures). What you don't want to do is exceed the maximum tire pressure or you may risk a blow out. 2.) Make sure your vehicle's total weight does not exceed the limit specified by the mfr in the manual. The max weight is usually determined by the brakes ability to stop the vehicle within a certain distance. Exceeding this weight limit can either mean not being able to stop adequately within a given distance (ex. reduce ability to stop) or could lead to possible blow outs as tires also have weight ratings too (maximum amount of weight that they can handle). In my experience, the weight ratings on tires generally exceeds what the mfr lists as the max weight rating of the car itself + people and cargo, but still you don't want to exceed the vehicle's max weight mainly for the sake of being able to brake properly and adequately. 3.) Check your tire pressure monthly. Especially in cliamtes where the temperature may drop or vary a lot. In general, I find that you lose about 1 PSI per month of tire pressure (less in the summer months) but more in the winter or cooler months when temps fall below 50 degrees or so. So I would get into a routine of checking tire pressure once per month and before you head out on a road trip or something where you might be driving a lot at highway speeds (this can also help with fuel economy too).

Biggest problem with the scion tc is they burned oil too aggressive, causing the rod bearings to need replacing. Which toyota ended up changing that part in 2007. Totally dodging a class action suit with how many scion owners blew their engines causing them to either rebuild or swap the engine. Such a headache and at the point, alot of owners just either junked it or sold it for pennies

All you need to do is Break the bead by the valve stem, then replace the valve stem. Then re inflate. The new valve stem weighs the same as the old one and the wheel will still be in balance. Ive done this multiple times using the bead breaker on a harbor freight manual tire machine that bought on sale just to use the bead breaker for this purpose. The inexpensive TPMS valve stems at Autozone look identical to the expensive ones at the dealer and work just as good for me.

The steel wheels which we all had on older cars (or on new but more basic models) held their pressure for a far longer period than alloy wheels. They corrode a lot quicker inside the tyre space and affect the seal between tyre and wheel. So there became more of a need to have these systems added to cars.

It's a TIRE spec thing, NOT a car thing. Also, those were LOW profile/aspect ratio. Hell, the rubber I'm running on my "99 Civic requires 44psi (after-mkt), whereas OEM factory tires were 36.
@sapphire163
@sapphire163 3 жыл бұрын
Is the 44psi maximum pressure for the tire, or recommended pressure? The number on the side of the tire is the maximum it can safely hold. The recommendation on the door jam of the car is for maximum traction and tire wear for the vehicle. That said, the fact you have changed tire size changes things.

Having gone through this TPMS ordeal with my scion xd recently, I had a plan on rebuilding the oem units. 1 Opening them, 2 desoldering the lithium battery and 3 resealing the thing with epoxy. no relearning/programming anything new. I found out the lithium batteries inside are slow drain and tolerant to impacts, not the average kind. I ended up just getting a tpms rebuild kit when i bought new tires, and that fixed my tpms issues. i think they replaced the valve stems, and required seals.

I had a battery die in a tire pressure monitor. Had it replaced when a new set of tires went on, but could not reset the system. I had it diagnosed at the dealer and turns out the replacement monitor was not compatible as the number of ID digits were wrong (7 digits instead of 6 or something like that). A $175, remove, replace, re-mount and rebalance bill combined with that recall of thinking I should have gotten an OEM replacement before hand moments.

Sometimes it could be a suspension problem. I had my TPMS light until I replace my ball joints to my car

Older TPMS used the 4 ABS speed sensor on the car. the bearing sends a pulse to the sensor to indicate the wheel speed. if one of the tire has less air, when the car going on a straight line, that tire spins less than the tire has full air. this tire is the "smaller" one than other tires. therefore the computer knows and lights up the TPMS light.

Sound advice but no good in the UK as the TPMS like ABS is now part of the annual safety check.

I had a case where the TPMS came on with no hole in the tire. I took it to a tire place and they said the tire wasn't seated right, he reseated it for free and it fixed the problem.

The TPMS dash light on my 2014 Toyota Highlander usually comes on with the change of season going into winter. I have usually been able to reset it and turn the dash light off but this year it keeps coming back on after driving several miles. I do have an old fashion, hand held tire pressure gauge, I do know how to use it and all five tires have correct pressure. But it is a little annoying that I can no longer reset the light and keep it off. I do not feel like having each tire broken down just to change out the batteries. Any thoughts?

In the hood when they put on those huge aftermarket dank wheels, most of them would have pulled the bulb out of their dash board tire indicator socket 🤣

But my tires on my Ford Mondeo are 30 lbs normal but when fully loaded the estate car has 41 lbs rear and 35 lbs front. How does the computer know I want to load the car fully?

I have a 09' Toyota Yaris and both the maintenance and tire pressure gauge lights are illuminated. I tried resetting them to no avail. The batteries in the tires are either low or dead, but I do not know about the maintenance indicator light.

Way back when I had an old 1970s Toyota Celica that would need to have the brakes bled frequently when it was cold. Since I lived out in the country back then it got to the point where I worked out a way so I could bleed the brakes myself. I would pump them up, put 2 30-lb weights on the brake pedal, get out of the car, open the valve, and then repeat. A real pain but it worked when I needed it to.
