The Backhand Serve is a serve that anyone can use and should use.
It’s a great serve for those that are new to the game, it can be easier to control because it’s in front of the body and easier to see what’s happening too.
Equally, it’s a great serve to develop throughout your career. You can develop more spin, more variations and deception too.
We’ll be looking at all of the above and much more in this video. If you’re already using a backhand serve, can you add some of these concepts to it? Or, perhaps this is your sign to start developing your backhand serve?

A suggestion: In your future videos, is it possible to use balls that make it easy to see the spin on the ball, something like Joola spin balls? It would then be super obvious to see the effects of the serve you are showing. BTW I say topspin at the end.

Hi Craig, I was thinking the same thing. And... why not invite the slow mo guys to have a very good accuracy of the spins, movements, ball's rpm, high an lenght of the rebounds.... It should be nice with their phantom 😊😊 Friendly,

...even Samsonov close to the end of his career, almost exclusively, used backhand serve in his matches, and that guy knows a thing or two about Table Tennis :-) It appears that with the backhand serve you could potentially serve right and left (watch Kong Linghui's hybrid own-developed serve and the backhand serve)..... Thanks for the vid! Big fan, as usual 🙂

Backspin 100% What helps is looking at the racket angle on contact. I played against someone recently who was really good at backhand serve and, like Craig, the arm/elbow motion is the same on all variations so that threw me off a bit the first times I faced it. Good thing for the receiver is that the racket is not concealed for very long so you have a opportunity to focus on the contact point. As for placement I always found this extremely hard to predict. Like Craig said, when the server maintains the same posture throughout their serves it really doesn't give away much and I feel like the backhand serve gives you such a nice angle for placing the ball anywhere you want. Definitely something I'll practice more! Thanks for yet another great video, Craig!

great video! Thanks for your work. For me the most important part of playing backhand serve is indeed the grip. I am not the fastest to go back to shake hand after, for instance, reverse pendulum. Really liked the part on the different starting positions. I have come to like the far out position quite a bit recently, especially long with lots of side spin to the backhand side- ball moves off and then onto the table.

@alanmartinez7122
@alanmartinez7122 7 ай бұрын
Hi Craig. I've been waiting for this video for a long time. I ask you a question, in this service is the wrist important or is the arm used more to generate the spin? It is difficult for me to generate a strong spin on the backhand serve.
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy
@TheTableTennisServiceGuy 7 ай бұрын
If the grip is not tight (just light enough) then you'll benefit from some wrist action in the serve, which will allow for more spin. So, yes, it can be important.
