This is another 'basic video' as the others related to steering-wheels. It has the purpose to help interested users to put into practice some of the 'trial and error method' and get accustomed to the handsewing technique.
The video has no audio nor texts to let the students do their own research and ask questions if some doubt.
I hope you find it useful!
Cesar

I am so glad to have found your channel!! I have been doing leatherwork for about a year but no one ever asked me to do a steering wheel until recently. I truly appreciate how you are sharing this knowledge as such info is hard to find without paying a small fortune. THANK YOU!

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge. Craftsmen - especially from your generation - often protective of their experience and knowledge but you choose to give freely from what you have had to work hard to understand yourself. Your generosity of your knowledge is uncommon and I am very appreciative of it.

Man that is so awesome. I was with you until the sewing machine. I don't have one or access to one. But I am going to try this, I will just have to go the stitching on each piece by hand. If I measure it out correctly, using the template you made for marking out the stitches. I think I can make this work. It will probably be frustrating, I will most likely have to do it more than once, and cost me a bit more. But I want a Red shift knob, to match my Red leather MOMO steering wheel and the custom Red leather shift boot and emergency brake lever cover I bought from a craftsman in England. I have searched high and low for a Red leather shift knob for my car, but they were all either cheap looking, metal, or just plain junk. Nothing as nice as this. I am definately going to try this. 🤔 You do outstanding work, thank you for posting this. On the chance ( more like probability ) that my efforts fall short of my expectations. Do you accept commissions by mail? After I ruin my shift knob, can I buy a new one and send it to you for professional results? I would like a nice bright red, with black stitching. The shift knob is for a 1996 Volkswagen MKIII Cabriolet. Once again very nice work. Thanks for posting.

Not a big deal, just some practice beforehand. I would recommend to first do the training on 'stretchy vinyl'. The 'hand sewn stitches' also work perfectly for it. Remind the 'key' is match the pieces one in front of the other to do the hand sewing. Thanks so much for watching these videos!

Signore Cesar, Your work is wonderful demonstrative, Beautifully filmed and perfectly executed. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm interested in a few questions. First question: What you wipe the leather 37:41, I mean, it's acetone or acquaragia or ragia minerale? Leather cover after these steps, have not changed, so I don't understand what kind of solution did you have in the plastic bottle, often after the acetone(acquaragia or ragia minerale) may be dissolving leather cover and then the white thread(or any other contrasting stitch to the color of the leather ) to be painted. Last question what finish for the leather you are using?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 7 жыл бұрын
Hello, The liquid I use is called here in Mexico 'washer'. it is a product shoemakers use to clean off dirt, glue, etc. without damaging the surface of leather. I don't know the composition, sorry. In fact 'automotive leathers' come with a 'transparent sealer/ lacquer' on top surface. Sometimes, I add more 'lacquer' (by hand) as a reinforcement, because these parts are of daily use.

Hello, thanks for the great detailed video. I've just done the pattern for my Trans Am shifter knob (one piece design with three cuts) thanks to your explanations. Now I only have to take it off, cut the piece in the final leather, apply it to the knob and hand sew. Now I was wondering, could I use lamb skin instead of traditional cow leather ? I love the touch of lamb skin and I happen to have some meant for leather jackets and handbags. But I have the feeling it wouldn't last long.
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 жыл бұрын
+SuperDuty455 I'm so glad the video was useful for you! ...I think you're right...automotive leather would last longer because it is thicker and it has a sealer/lacquer on top that protects it from daily rubbing.
@Raptor3388
@Raptor3388 8 жыл бұрын
I ended up using cow leather. It turned out pretty good ! It's great to have the knob look right. What is the sealer/laquer you are talking about ?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 жыл бұрын
+SuperDuty455 Automotive leather is also called 'top finished leather' and it comes with a coat of a 'transparent waxy sealer'...it stops the leather surface from peeling off. Wet a piece of rag with water and rub some part of same leather and verify if some decoloration (if pigment is going off)
@Raptor3388
@Raptor3388 8 жыл бұрын
Ok, I don't see anything on the rag. It's recycled leather by the way, I used the leather from a damaged and way too large perfecto jacket. Felicidades Maestro.
