I have a sister in law like that, She gave me some clothes because ,as she got older, her arthritis meant she couldn't wear some things. Bottom line...it doesn't matter whether you "prefer" expensive, upscale clothes, if you can't afford it, (and she cannot) then you just have to lower your standards. Period. You CAN'T afford the lifestyle. Entitled and spoiled. The attitude is simply "I want it, therefore I should have it." Doesn't matter what it does to her mother's future, her husband's future, etc. The temper is simply a manifestation of being told "no". It's sad that the mother doesn't have the guts to stand up to her and say "I'm done. I have no more cash to loan to you, sorry". But I'm sure the reason the mother doesn't stand up to her daughter is because the daughter will become abusive to her mother until she hands over the money. Another family member should be stepping in to help the mother say "No" to this spoiled brat.

I'm on disability, I live on under $1200.00 a month. A shopping spree? I can't afford the orthodic shoes I need because they are $200.00 a pair. I have TWO pairs of shoes, a pair of boots and a pair of rubber sandals I wear as slippers. Buying a package of new underwear is a serious purchase. My family gives me money to get these things. I was on welfare for years as well. $700.00 a month, in a city where a decent safe room rents for about $600.00 a month. Part of my problem is that the cost of living is shooting up and the disability stipend is staying as is. So the money goes faster, and I'm not doing anything crazy with shopping. People like Alison should have to try and live my life for a month. They'd be stunned witless by the realities of life that most people have to deal with.

Sandra Nelson I work in health care. Many of my patients are in the same boat. They have to make very difficult choices every month. This brat isn’t doing herself any favors by racking up all its debt. Not to mention the toll it has taken on her marriage and her mother. Anyone else watch “if You Can’t Pay, They Take It Away” on KZbin? Maybe by now the high court enforcement agents have knocked on her door.

The one thing I was really wanting to hear is did she start giving her Mom more money back towards what was loaned? 20 a month is freaking nothing, so I hope she's paying her mom at least 4 or 5 times more monthly. Then slowly increasing that as she either cuts her budget more or gets a raise.

My father was very wealthy, lost everything when me & sis were respectively 14 & 11. Long story short, my mother & sister never emotionally recovered, spent their lives looking for others, mainly males, to financially support them. I went to work, paid my way through college and worked for 30 yrs. Paid my taxes, raised 4 kids...I'm retired, its hand to mouth now, but I am beholden to no person and I can sleep at night.

Growing up I was the child living with mom after their divorce. As the only daughter with two brothers I was mercilessly teased bullied and shopping with mom at the bargain basement at J penny it was awful. I promised myself only the best from now on. After my divorce with two babies a good friend took me into a bargain shop. I said I'm not going in there!! She said u are broke you have no choice! What a wakeup call! She said the secret is buy new with tags on the garment or new and never washes. It worked! That was years ago. Sometimes I spend but I get right back to the budget. Any change is good. Just stick to it. At discount store TJ Maxx I've found Michael Kors handbags ($45!) and Ralph Lauren sheets ($56) for a king size set, on the package it says $280! I would never!

Wish the host had jumped on board when she said she'd rather go without than buy inexpensive clothes. Great, shop for a few quality items and you won't shop so often. It would highlight the point their trying to make that she's shopping because she doesn't have any fulfilling interests.

When she was pushing back on holding on to higher end shopping/clothes that’s her lack stitch effort to feel like she has a say and is in charge. Without that “condition” she has nothing. She must completely surrender to the process. Good show. Before thrift shops were cool my mom would take us as kids and we’d buy clothes there. We were severely broke and the talk of money brought major strain and conflict in the family. I loved finding something cool and vintage but I was terrified of being seen going into the shop by peers. My mom was the same way. Sometimes when I’d ask where she bought something she’d embarrassingly say “my favorite shop” and would never say the place if someone, not in the family, was present. I did overhear kids taunt others about “Payless shoes”. It was bad enough dealing with the stress of my family issues (chaos really) let alone have that spill over into school. Now I go in to all second hand stores but there’s still a tiny bit of stigma hovering behind me. In my 20s I was also a shopaholic… still slip once in a while but I catch it and course correct when I feel the grip.

You've done well to recognize and reject the tendencies of the "mindless consumer". The societal conditioning/messaging put on us by credit card companies and all manner of manufacturers have manipulated with a high degree of success since the 1920s and I applaud you for spitting the hook out of your mouth, so to speak. Also, buying recycled items is a form of support to our beautiful planet.✌🏼🐦

I have exactly 3 designer branded items in my wardrobe, a necklace and handbag that were gifted and button up shirt I found in the local charity shop (was originally sold for 95 quid and I got it for like 10 quid) and whilst I love some designer items, I do not need them and frankly if I’m going to buy something I want it be real quality and something I need. Currently planning on saving up for some boots (which will hopefully help with my dislocating ankles) that are £200 but they’re useful as well as gorgeous not to mention it helps to support a small business with ethics I can get behind make me feel better about it not to mention the fact I just won’t get them until I’ve saved up and know that that money won’t be better spent on something I desperately need or bills etc.
