Patti Harrison learns to reconcile the violent history of pride with the modern day celebration. TLDR: Don't throw out your rainbow vodka just yet, but make sure your brick-throwing arms are in shape!

So both Johnson and riviera both said they weren’t the ones to initiate the riots (which is a contested term anyways) and many of the first hand accounts say that bricks weren’t thrown at all. Johnson herself said that she didn’t get to the inn till after the uprising was in full swing. Obviously we should remember stonewall as a big moment but perhaps we should fixate less on tying them to the Stonewall events, which opens the narrative up to manipulation from anyone (transphobes racists etc). Instead shouldn’t we focus more on their incontestable and much harder won success in creating STAR as an international community of activists? Just my thoughts
@xbutterfliesx
@xbutterfliesx 5 жыл бұрын
This! A lot of accounts actually say it was a butch lesbian that "started" the riot. Although, I agree. It's hard to pinpoint who exactly it was, and should be seen as the LGBT community coming together and fighting for their right to exist. We shouldn't put so much emphasis on who "started" it.

First off, Judy is classy af, and I wish she was my grandma. >_> But you know, sometimes I want to go to Pride and represent... except the one time I did, I got equal amounts of hate from both hetero and homosexuals for being ace. I was like, "This is it, the thing that bridges the gap. Lookit us asexuals, being helpful like that. I guess A really DOES stand for ally!" But I was also like, "Okay, I'm going home. Maybe I'll come back in nine years." (I did not go back this year, let's make it an even decade.)

Same here, went to Pride three years ago to represent the community, and was ignored and excluded. Tried to approach an info booth and claimed my asexual pride, only to be riddiculed and laughed at. They had never heard about asexuals. So instead of representing classic pride, I wear my "equality" necklace at work, with my friends, or at celebrations. And label myself quickly when meeting new people, before they comment my single lifestyle with a sympathetic "oh, single eh.... Bummer"- Love and equlity from Happy Ace

*Neither one of those folks started the "Stonewall Riot" of their own admission; *"Riot" is a stretch considering the historical accounts of people actually at the Stonewall *There were no bricks around to be thrown, though some do say rocks from tree planters may have been used Look, the story of who started it isn't important. Neither are bricks or no bricks, throwing shot glasses, or slinging high heels, though perpetuating inacccuracy is quite frustrating. The important part is the people. We remember when they *stood up* to fight. When they were tired of being beaten down, beaten up, bullied, harrassed, and murdered. They fought for what was right, for their place and for the place of future generations. We remember they *stood up* . So now, amongst the growing levels of violence, of LGBTQ+/GRSM hatred, the rights being slowly chiseled away, *we have no business sitting down* .

Well said. I know this is an old post, but wanted to say that. Also I think the hard part about today’s “fight” is how insidious and under the surface so much of it is. The powers that be who are against this sort of thing play their cards differently exactly so they don’t have riots. It’s almost harder to navigate, and certainly a more delicate dance in many ways even though the status quo seems to be moving in the right direction.

Amazing segment, Samantha! I love these history lessons that will help inform people who may have the wrong idea about what Pride Month is really about. Could you possibly do a piece about the history of drag queens, their origins, and the huge role they have also played in the movement? On another note, Judy Bowen is GORGEOUS! She's obviously older now, but I can only imagine how amazing she looked in her youth. I would've had no idea she was trans if I ran into her on the street.
