the deceptive cadence is a bit of an obsession of mine it might be a cliche of sorts, but it's... really good. When the rest of the song has a lot of rich harmony and movement, at the emotional climax of the song, you might be *really* longing for that resolution to the tonic. but the deceptive cadence can *nearly* hit that tonic and give that resolution, but instead say "no, we're not done just yet," and the feeling of longing that comes from it is so strong. if i'm working on a piece and i have any level of emotional investment in it, i tend to use the deceptive cadence. it might be a cliche, but it means something very specific to me. you're not ready to say goodbye yet, you want just a few more moments of fun before the sun sets. before it's time to rest. let the song last just a little bit longer, please. i don't want it to end just yet. to me, that's what's so good about the deceptive cadence, and that's the feeling it can really excel at delivering.
