I like that you read some of the first page of each - it definitely made me add a couple of them to my list! I have been very into seeing what people loved from 2024 and adding those to my top of the to read pile. I recently read The Safekeep because of that and LOVED it. Next up is Daughter by Claudia Dey which I have similarly heard amazing things about.

Feeling weird this January is very hashtag relatable. I started like four books and put them down before landing on Ancillary Sword and even that is taking me longer than normal. But I’m happy I get to watch these recs for inspo

yeah my reading was pretty erratic this month... sigh! curious about ancillary sword / that series by ann leckie? i hadn't heard of it, but wikipedia tells me she wrote the first draft of the first book as a part of NaNoWriMo and that is so rad

@ReadWriteReese I really like it. I didn’t know she wrote it as a NaNoWriMo book.That’s so cool! The first book jumps around in time and was a bit difficult to piece everything together at first. But, I think that’s what the point. This book is a lot more straightforward. My friend recommended it to me by saying “it’s everything you wanted A Memory Called Empire to be, but better.” And that pitch hooked me. Also, I saw your Beautyland video. Have you read I Think We’ve Been Here Before? It’s got similar vibes and engaged me the same way.

I must say, your reading matter is very eclectic. I remember On the Beach from my mothers bookshelf when i was a child. I'd be interested to hear how you found the older writing style. If you're looking for polar bleak, Robert Scott's journey to the South Pole is as bleak as it comes. Thanks for the reading info.

My favourite book by Jenny Erpenbeck is Visitation. I read some other books by her, but couldn't finish Kairos. I don't think it's her strongest work. If you know a bit about her life, it seems to be autofiction. Erpenbeck always tells political stories through personal ones.
