Sold my square Volvo 145S wagon for $500 just to give a guy with kids a head start. Back in 1989. Last I heard, he was still driving it, and still pissed off that I replaced the SU;s with Dell’Ortos!. Some people are never happy.

Great episode. It's nice to see that Tom showed the "other" side of treasure hunting; that's to say it's a lot of work, and that finding the "Cobra in the barn" isn't going to happen every time you venture out the door. Additionally, I feel that the episode reenforced the notion that there is variety in the car collecting world that must not be overlooked (and that's unfortunately what a great deal of youtube and other mainstream shows usually neglect to illustrate). A volvo "fanatic" or collector would love to roam that yard. Great work Hagerty, great work Tom!

Nice to see some Swedish heritage in the US. The square body's would deserve some more mentioning, they most certainly belong in that robust line-up of Volvo's history. They don't call them tanks for nothing, plus the red block they run is legendary. As already mentioned that V4 and it's bigger V6 ran in quite a lot of euro-build Fords. Anything from the Transit to the Capri's ran with them.

I actually sent an email , and got a very wonderful and informative reply about my 68 Mercury truck.. So Keep On Truckin my friend and I look forward to your other episodes too. Lastly, I'm sure we viewers, would like to see some more of those episodes, where those guys rove around and fix people's cars. That's quite impressive that they reach out to other people like that. Favorite one is where they fix the old Ford truck for that lady. Thx.

The first prototype of Volvo 444 was presented in 1944. Likely inspired of the prewar Fords. The produced cars came 1947.The early wagons was called 445, the later ones ( I Believe its a late one in the film) was called 210.The Engine in the Saab 95 (the wagons is called 95, the sedans 96) is not just a industrialengine. Its a german Fordautomobilemotor. It belonged in the german Fords 12M, 15M and the cheaper models of 17MThanx for a very good show and greetings from a snowy Sweden

Sorry for being a nitpick but the P445 you saw, the wagon. Is actuaally a P210, wich has a curved onepiece window. The earlier P445 had a split window. Great series by the way. Been bingewatching or two days, would be a dream to go around watching a picking up some cars now and then, but here in Sweden and Norway this is extremly rare. Found a 1957 Mercedes 190 SL in sweden 15 years ago, really bad shape but owner wouldn´t sell. Later heared the house was condemed and the car was collected by a scrapcompany who crushed it. Actually shed a tear and a bottle of whiskey went down that day.

The old Brit car in the barn is called an Austin A40 Devon. They were launched in 1947 and were built up to 1952. There was a two door version called the Dorset, but that was discontinued in 1949. Both had a 1200cc A-series engine. And yes they were exported to Canada and the US, but not in huge numbers. It also came as a 'station wagon' to coin a US term, and was called the 'Countryman' Estate and also it came as a utility and a few convertibles were manufactured in the Australian.

For those whom might don´t know, Volvo was up until the V and S series coding the car-numbers like this, Example for a 245: The No:2 stood for witch series it was. The no:4 stood for what amount of cylinders the motor got. The no:5 stood for the amount of doors.

On the Austin, it's an Austin A40 (40 horsepower) Devon. 1950-ish is about right. There was a later rebodied series of this car called the Somerset. The engine is 1.2 litre, and is not exactly a B series engine, but is the precursor to it. Despite the small motor, they were well regarded in my part of the world (Australia) as being able to take a hammering in rough conditions, and they sold very well indeed here. On the Ford V4, I think that they were most notorious for their use in Ford UK's Transit van which also sold in huge numbers around the world. It has a reputation as a very rough running motor.

It’s a shame those other folks wouldn’t let you look at their cars. But those Volvos were cool. The first car my parents bought back in ‘64 when they got married was a slightly used ‘63 Volvo sedan - from the pictures I’ve seen, it was much like that wagon, only in sedan form. And that Saab wagon - man, you *never* see a V-4 engine. That’s so cool! And the Austin? Extremely rare - and it was left-hand-drive, which is even *rarer* than usual. Great episode! Looking forward to the next one already. :-)

It ended in 72 in Capri Mk1, and in 77 in Transit Mk1.....

Missed opportunity to talk about Volvo's massive contribution to the auto industry. The "square" ones had to do with safety all the way back to the 1960's, when other makers churned out death traps (many also square). Volvo literally re-shaped the auto industry for decades and developed al sorts of interesting features worth talking about.

I had a 1965 544 S. Twin carbs. Not sure why you say it's from the '50s. They date from the late '50s but continued on to 1966. Best car I ever had, I think. Funny thing about is that it was a wreck, different color fenders, door knob to open the trunk but every time I met a Volvo on the highway, they'd wave. It's the only car I've ever driven that this happened.

The v4 was widely used in German Ford models at the time like Taunus, Capri. Transit etc. A few even made their way over here to North America in some of the earliest models imported and sold out of Mercury dealers. It looks exactly like a 2.3/ 2.6/ 2.8 Cologne v6 with 2 cylinders removed from the center. Ford usa used the 2.8 in some of the Pinto/Bobcat, Mustang II and Bronco II and 86 Aerostar. With an upgrade to an aluminum timing gear these engines were very long lasting. The Cologne later evolved into the 2.9 (EFI) Scorpio, Ranger, Bronco II and lastly the 4.0 Explorer engine in the N.A market.

Austin A40 Devon, 1200cc engine. I helped a mate drop a 1500cc engine from a locally made Morris major into it mated to a 4 speed floor shift MG B gearbox and the rear axle from an Austin A55. He put 2 x 1 1/2" Su carbs on it. Once it was dialed in it gave many newer and more 'muscley" cars a good run for the money, and towed hus trailer sailer across the city to the water, something the original engine struggled with. And yes he liked his Pommy cars, he had a succession of Jaguar MK 2's.

The V4 Ford engine was used in German Fords. It started in the 'Cardinal' project which originated in the US. Ford's attempt to create a car of the size of a VW Beetle. Ford decided not to market this in US. In stead it was given to the German Ford factory and developed into the Taunus 12M, around 1962. The V4 and V6 engines developed out of them have powered many German and English Fords.

My dad converted a '73 to run on petrol back in the eighties. I believe they had steel wheels, as they were reliable motors for the time period and managed rough conditions very well. Mom and dad used to have rwd cars before the Saab. My uncle lived on top of a hill and my dad used to help him out at his metal shop. One fierce winter evening my mom went to pick up dad and it had snowed a LOT. Once she got on top of the hill and dad hopped on board, she sighed "You couldn't have managed to get here in any front-wheel driven car, I'll tell you that!"... Dad decided that it was for everyones best that he kept his mouth shut that moment..

Think it is the V4 that was also fitted to the Ford Transit van.

First V4 "Cologne"" like in Saabs was used in Ford Taunus 12M/15M called " P4" in 1962 -- also front wheel drive - and it's succesor - the P6 Taunus up to 1972. Yes it was also used as a generators, pumps engines thanks to it's compact size. It was used also in rwd european cars - Ford Taunus P5 from 64, Ford Transit from 1965, Ford 17M P7 from 1967, Ford Capri from 1969 up to 1972, Ford Consul (like the european Granada from 1972) (in Transit up to 1977 - then it was replaced by the Pinto 1.6 and 2.0 engines in line 4). V4 cologne was avaiable from 1.2 liter 40HP, 1.3 50-55HP, 1.5 55-65 HP, up to 1.7 GT 75 HP (also 65HP non GT). From this engine Ford created the legendary V6 by adding 2 cylinders (1.8V6, 2.0 V6, 2.3 V6, 2.6 V6 (that was available in US in Capri "sexy european", 2.8V6 - same as in Bronco, Mustangs II, III, etc.) - thats the block with added 2 cylinders -- you can see that clearly in the euro heads design - US market had different heads design.... and by removing the balance shaft and 3rd gear to the camshaft drive in v4 - made the fibre timing wheel timeless -- it goes for like milion miles in the V6. Also the 2.9 bronco, ranger, 4.0 explorer, aerostar - are based on the same cologne block which was made from the V4 :) Transit and Corsair and British Ford Capri had the British Essex V4 - only 1.7 and 2.0 -- the V6 were 2.5 and 3.0 - that's completly different engine a little bit similar in design with almost no parts shared. Engine was used also in Saab 95, 96, Sonett and Matra 530 (French odd car) This V4 was used also to power the first MUSTANG prototype !!! The lightweight glassfibre 2 seater from 1962 - had the 1.5 V4.

Honestly, you need to brush up your European car facts. That Volvo wasn't a copied design of a 48 Ford, it was designed during the war and introduced in 1947. Secondly, that Ford V4 wasn't just an industrial engine, it was widely used in European Ford models of the era.
