you leave your house and family just because of a car, it’s kind of overkill. And after all why this car is so bad, I've seen several reviews of this car, and for me it's just a bad economy car, but nothing to be ashamed of, at least you have a car.

@@averagecarguy420 Clearly you don't know what sarcasm is, sarcasm must be directed at someone else and usually means the opposite of what was said, that is, if he had written "in 1979 my father bought an Allegro, I loved that car" inside of the right context would be sarcasm, but as a text with no previous or posthumous context it will be misinterpreted as a fact. And by the way i am 90% sure that this story is false, i just used it as an excuse to question why this car is so hated, since i am neither british nor european.

I was telling my 87 year old dad all about this video today and what he told me may be of interest to you. He worked for Rover for 30 years and was part of the research team who created this vehicle. In fact, he was the final signature when new builds were signed off. The 1st prototype of the SS was dark racing green and actually had a round steering wheel. It was taken for a test drive by the top boss (I’ll have to clarify the name with my Dad again as to who it was) and he had 2 problems with the vehicle . 1 being the colour and 2 the shape of the steering wheel - he hated it - and said ‘how about a square one’. He then gave my Dad 48 hours to do the rectifying work before my Dad signed the vehicle off, and the rest is history. You learn something new every day !

Was that similar to the Austin 'Kimberly' & 'Tasman' produced in Aust in the '70's? I had a Tasman as my 2nd car after the Morrie 1100, and it was like a big Mini and very comfy for the time. It was a good vehicle which I sold to my cousin. He probably wrecked it, no doubt. He was a bit of a loose cannon!

Jonny, this is the first video I've viewed of your work ,and an apt one, reason being that Grandpa was an employee of H, Austin, and a works driver in of supercharged Austin 7's etc in the 20s and 30s. He retired before the Allegro was designed but did own one, the last vehicle he ever drove. I think he thought it wasn't a bad car, but perhaps that was out of loyalty to the old firm, and you can understand how it gained its reputation. Having watched a lot of Haggerty American barn finds, where the garage door opens to uncover dusty Mustangs, Plymouths , Cadillacs etc, I'd love to see Tom Cotter's reaction on finding an old Allegro under a dustcover...Anyway, Your humour and approach is really a joy to behold ( we Brits know how to not take ourselves too seriously ) and look forward to munching on your other car finds . Many thanks for the laughs

I can remember my Dad coming home from work with a 'New Austin Allegro' brochure, when they were first released, complete with square steering wheel. At that time he was earning a fortune but was so tight, he was driving a British Racing Green, 3 door Simca 1100. In the end, he opted for a white, 2 door, 1100cc FIAT 128 (reg: OBH 552L), with red interior. All three of these cars were an immense disappointment to a kid who was obsessed with cars. However, I suppose the fact that we also had a 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT (reg: CNF 191C), which had been changed to GTA spec, with aluminium wings, bonnet etc and twin side draught Weber carbs, with horns, made up for the general air of disillusionment.

@@johnchurch4705 1100cc 128s were mundane. A few years later, we had a 1300cc 128 coupé, which was a pocket rocket. It had the same engine, carb, gearbox etc as the 1300cc X-1/9.

Jack Coulter your right about the 1300 coupe and 3p. They were pocket rockets and quick 0-60.

Yep, here in the US, we had the AMC Pacer, the Ford Pinto... I have fond memories of our "hate you" cars that I rode in during the 70s. This was a great look into a bit of UK auto history that I would have had no clue about. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for updates. I'm a sucker for these sorts of stories.

What’s the status of this car now? Is it being brought back to life? Love this barn find stuff...thank you.

I love these quirky BL cars that were never sold here in Australia. The Allegro had a bloated look about it which didn't help sales but nowadays it has given it cult following. BMC built some strange looking cars, like the Austin 1800, which were sold in the thousands here. I agree with your comment about the Vanden Plas version of the Allegro, it looked an Allegro with a Bentley grille grafted on to it!

Had a 1750 super van den plas that I bought as a run around for £50 in 1987, velour seats...ALL the mod cons. Ran it for 18 months until I emigrated to Australia.....best fun car I’ve ever had, (and I have had a few). Didn’t give a shit about it, drove it everywhere, over anything.....it never missed a beat. Magic stuff! Good luck fellas.

I love the design of the interior and colour. I think it looks better than any other Leyland vehicle I've seen. Great find. What a shame someone broke in and stole parts as well as damaging it in the process. Great video.

I think this is the first “barn find” where “finding the barn” was the first order of business.

Hated the Allegro but this brough back memories of my grandfather blasting down the street from School in his blue on blue 1750 Maxi with me and two mates in the back sliding about on the vinyl. ❤️❤️
