Really like the concept and would gladly order one. If your taking suggestions mine would be to put a couple of horizontal attachment straps to each side as well just in case someone wanted to add a small mollie type pouch on the side. My first-aid kit is a small mollie type bag. Other then that I would buy me some of those strap pads from Kaufman and put on it like I did for the blackbird I use. Thanks for your ideas and wisdom of the woodsman.

Great concept. My only suggestion is reduce the fiddly bits by adding one more shoulder strap to the big bag. That way the haversack comes off faster and the shoulder straps stay in place on the knapsack body, leaving both bags fully functional.

Really nice concept, Blackie. I have been appreciating your Ground pounder series, as well. Those G-clips they use on modern bags are pretty slick. Two of those up top of the knapsack would allow quick removal and attachment of the haversack. The strap for the haversack could be run around the sides and bottom of the pack and cinched up. Best of luck with the project!

Nice concept, but I've always preferred wearing the haversack at my hip as usual and having separate knapsack/small ruck worn over the haversack strap. The haversack strap is so thin you'll never notice it under the knapsack. When you get to camp, you can just take off the knapsack and walk off with the haversack, no disassembly. I have also preferred one pocket knapsacks, I organise my gear in smaller sacks inside the knapsack, sort of a sack of smaller sacks. But I do like a 2 sack concept, one the scout sack, haversack, the other the camp sack, knapsack. Thanks for a great video.

Hey blackie! I hope this note finds you well and happy! Give your pack a top flap with a pocket just like your Boy Scout Yucca pack, make the flap long enough that it will go over a "blanket roll". Put a grommet "D" ring arrangement to cinch it down (like the Yucca pack). Put a "hatchet sleeve" in the back under the flap. All that "strap through the double "D" ring "bidness" is way too fiddly for me, I'd be cursing and throwing things pretty quick, again look at the strap system on the Yucca pack, it has worked like a charm for 100 years! Make the haversack completely separate, and attach it to the top flap with a couple "D" rings and a couple "dog leash" snap hooks. Put "D" rings along the sides of the main pack, again like the Yucca pack, you can secure a bedroll and you could also cinch up the sides of the pack when it was not going to be completely full. Please forgive me for hijacking your project but as we have noticed before we must have been born under the same star, I built my own pack using a Yucca pack as a base and used it for many years, still grieving over upgrading to an Alice pack! Again sorry for hijacking your project and also for the length of this comment. Regards and best to you and yours, Pink.

Blackie why not use fast tech buckles instead? Easier to remove and return the straps. You could also use a zipper like those used on jackets to attach the haversack to the bigger bag. It would also be nice to have a “steel ring” attached on the front of the haver sack or the bigger bag for flint and steel fires. I like the ideas you have for your gear as they are very practical and useful.

Blackie, I know exactly the Alice Harness rig you're talking about. It was the old Alice "H" suspenders (predecessor to the "Y" harness) and the military actually had a special attachment to carry a second butt pack above the one on the pistol belt. Somewhat adjustable for height. This system was also used to carry a man pack radio or seismic detector to monitor probes inserted into the ground to detect enemy movement in Vietnam. There was also an optional attachment to carry a bedroll/sleeping bag at the very top of the "H" Harness. The knapsack design is First Rate !

you say ultralight to me i hear overpriced that's delicate and flimsy that'll have to be replaced inside of 2 seasons! a 10x12 10 ounce sil-ny is flimsy enough! i can see this being a hunting pack as well Blackie and if you don't mind some observations and suggestions here, i definitely like the canvas and the weight of it but i've never been a fan of waxed (being north of Canterbury i find it's noisier and stiffer in colder weather in my experience compared to oilskin) maybe oilskin instead of waxed? if it was me i'd add say 11/2 to 2 inch side panels for tad bit more depth/width whatever it is in the dimensions! and i think i'd add a hanging loop to the main bag that you could slip over a toggle on a tree in camp maybe some side loops at the top for tying on an axe or hatchet myself, you can always tie off the handle to the side handles at the bottom! maybe switch out the D rings to those quick adjust tri-glide buckles?
@suecharnock93692 жыл бұрын
isn't it interesting that as your experience grows, the less you need! I have seen the same with first aid when I was part of St John Ambulance here in the UK. You could always tell the newbies by the size of their first aid kits. After a day of lugging that around a large event they soon learnt what is really needed and went down eventually to a bum bag/ butt pack!!. If things get hairy and you need first aid folks - always head for the one with the smallest kit............

You could probably market that system as a "lighter" hunting or guide's knapsack. Maybe not only to carry the items you mentioned but the essentials for a hunter or guide on a day excursion. Keeping the hunter or guide & hunters in some reasonable comfort if their not able to make it back to their base camp or lodgings after a day hunt... Just a thought.

I have the the old Vietnam style low bearing equipment with the butt pack to canteens I also have a 2 core canteen with the canvas carrier and I have a map case haversack that I cut the pen loops for cut each one and down the middle and every other one and it's it'll hold a 12 gauge shotgun shell which is basically what I use it for but I also have that old canvas cook set backpack doesn't have any snaps this has one pocket in the front everything's tied down with the d-rings but if you unhook the shoulder straps there's two hooks on it that hook to the bottom of the thing but you can shorten them up and hook them on the d-rings of your load bearing y strap and the d-rings in the frontal beer load bearing section of them backpack that along with the butt pack and the haversack there's plenty of room to carry all your gear what I like about it is you can carry more than one canteen especially on a deer camp because sometimes you don't have water that you can boil so that gallon of water really helps then and your pistol belt part of it you can carry your pistol with you one with your shotgun shells and have a set plenty of ammunition just saying just a thought you're backpack idea with the Blackbird parasect attachments a great idea totally
