I like how Quaithe literally told Dany to go there to learn the truth but she never did and nothing was ever mentioned about it again. It’s so aggravating, you can tell that George was possibly thinking of having Dany go there but for some reason changed his mind, I would have loved for the city to be a big location in the story.

Everyone shits on him for not finishing the series but it’s plot holes like these he probably keeps finding that put him up against a wall. It def felt like Asshai was meant to be more important early on in the series but the story’s started straying away from that

Like a combination of Mordor and the usual "Here be dragons" drawn on the edges of old maps, cranked up to 11. It would have been nice if Daenerys had to travel to Asshai, perhaps due to rumors of dragons, and discover some hidden truth about the Long Night. Also depictions of the Long Night being a global thing would have been nice

The way it's written is a lot like what most people in pre-modern Europe would have seen Asia. After a certain point we have "here be dragons", quite literally in the case of Martin's world as Dragons may possibly originate from the Shadowlands...

It's almost like Asshai was affected by the medieval fantasy equivalent of a Chernobyl-like meltdown, with the river water being poisoned and the fish deformed and the grass glowing green.

Asshai is steeped in very old, very dark magic. Magic in this world is a lot like nuclear radiation- a source of great power but also extremely dangerous and polluting. The Doom of Valyria was most probably caused by magic or possibly lack thereof as it is told Valyrian mages used magic to rein in the volcanoes. The sorcery of ancient Valyria was nothing compared to what was and probably still is going on in the Shadowlands...

I do think that might’ve been inspired by the Love Canal tragedy in the Northeast in the late 70’s. Considering GRRM probably watched all the news about it at the time

Long Night = powerful nuclear explosion propelling thousands of tons of ash into the atmosphere preventing sunlight to reach the land, which could have taken any amount of time to settle. This could have left residual radiation affecting the region.

I’ve always wanted George or even a TV company to pick up a series set in Asshai with new characters and a new story. It’s such a cool and interesting city that I’d love a whole story based around it.

What do you think about Asshai was the capital of the Great Empire of Dawn? They were the first dragon lords before the long night. The empire has fallen over the Long Night, and the other kingdoms are simply remnants of that empire. Such a great city could not be built in the shadow, so it had to be built before the catastrophe destroyed this land. Maybe they had caused the long night.
