I like how Quaithe literally told Dany to go there to learn the truth but she never did and nothing was ever mentioned about it again. It’s so aggravating, you can tell that George was possibly thinking of having Dany go there but for some reason changed his mind, I would have loved for the city to be a big location in the story.

Like a combination of Mordor and the usual "Here be dragons" drawn on the edges of old maps, cranked up to 11. It would have been nice if Daenerys had to travel to Asshai, perhaps due to rumors of dragons, and discover some hidden truth about the Long Night. Also depictions of the Long Night being a global thing would have been nice

It's almost like Asshai was affected by the medieval fantasy equivalent of a Chernobyl-like meltdown, with the river water being poisoned and the fish deformed and the grass glowing green.

Asshai is steeped in very old, very dark magic. Magic in this world is a lot like nuclear radiation- a source of great power but also extremely dangerous and polluting. The Doom of Valyria was most probably caused by magic or possibly lack thereof as it is told Valyrian mages used magic to rein in the volcanoes. The sorcery of ancient Valyria was nothing compared to what was and probably still is going on in the Shadowlands...

I do think that might’ve been inspired by the Love Canal tragedy in the Northeast in the late 70’s. Considering GRRM probably watched all the news about it at the time

The way it's written is a lot like what most people in pre-modern Europe would have seen Asia. After a certain point we have "here be dragons", quite literally in the case of Martin's world as Dragons may possibly originate from the Shadowlands...

What do you think about Asshai was the capital of the Great Empire of Dawn? They were the first dragon lords before the long night. The empire has fallen over the Long Night, and the other kingdoms are simply remnants of that empire. Such a great city could not be built in the shadow, so it had to be built before the catastrophe destroyed this land. Maybe they had caused the long night.

My theory is that Azor Ahai was either a son or relative of BloodStone Emperor. When Emperor brought the Long Night, in a blood ritual killing his sister, to Planetos Azor Ahai decided to forge a sword Lightbringer aka Dawn because of the impact that Black Stone would have when it hit the Planetos, possibly in the vicinity of Asshai, there would surely be darkness and snow and ice because that detonaion would've been unbelivable. Like cover the whole globe type of power and the impact site would've been heavily hit with either radiation poisoning or some other type of disease. Since the city is so huge yet there's only a 10th of former population that would suggest this was the biggest city in the world, probably a capital of a great power like the Great Empire of Dawn. It was either the magic that took to forge the sword and the great price that came with it or the detonaion of Black Stone of that Church of Starry Wisdom worships that destroyed the life in Asshai. Now how does the Sword Dawn fit the story? Well since House Dayne does look Valyrian but doesn't have a connection I'd wager that they are probably descented from Azor Ahai, or some nobility from the Great Empire, and that's why they have the Sword Dawn and the Office of the Sword of the Morning. Because they knew that one day all of this would repeat and the world would need a hero once more.
