In general, for most of us "time" feels like it's moving, it "feels" as though we are on a continual march towards the future, and that the past exists as some vague place behind us. There is a subjective element to this, do we experience time as a judgment based on how we've learned to measure it, or do we experience time as a real sensation. This is important to understand as we get into how this relates to George RR Martin's ASOIAF series.

I just want to point out that Norse mythology is based on a view of time as cyclical, and there are a SHIT TON of parallels and direct references to Norse myth, especially the myth of Ragnarok, in ASOIAF. How could you miss that out?

I’m studying philosophy at university and I’m impressed with how you brought ideas in ‘philosophy of time’ and used them to see what is time like in ASOIAF. The A-Theory and B-Theory of time is a continuation of the metaphysical dispute between the pre-Socratic philosophers, Heraclitus and Parmenides. Time remains a profound mystery, second only to existence itself.

Now this is one of the reasons why I watch this channel on a regular basis. To actually hear about ideas that actually push my own ideas and theories even further. Time especially. Is it linear? What about the wheel theory? How about the multiple dimensions theory? I don't hold any answers, and I doubt anyone really does at this point. Regardless, it is the most fascinating theorycraft there is. No matter what franchise you pick up that delves in to the subject. It is a shame that Dune-saga was never finished, even thought it never took upon itself to address the time travel dilemma. For it's complexicty maybe it was the best choice, since after seeing the MCU Avengers conclusion... Well, it can be a cheap shot to end a story just to... bring it to a finish. GRRM here has brought an interesting way to see this whole time travel dilemma, and I do hope that he will see it to the bitter end, which I do hope... Is bitter.

Great vid! I gotta say the Bran chapters were honestly among my least favorite to read, but I suppose the good aspect of the show revealing Bran's destiny is it peaked my interest in looking for clues GRRM has planted in his POV chapters, and it's looking like he is going to be incredibly powerful. Can't wait for the books to actually show us all the cool shit he can do!

Barry Bend well I don’t think it’s possible that the ever wouldn’t have one built. Take the example of what Bran did to Hodor. That was something that always happened. So when Hodor was born it was inevitable that he would have his mind damaged by Bran. This would make the universe of ASOIAF predetermined.

I believe the future can effect the past. For example: What if we got a chapter in AGOT with Eddard Stark cleaning Ice, and he hears something that makes him say “who goes there?” Obviously what he heard was Bran from ADWD. There’s an amazing, complex story created by Treyarch which is the Aether Storyline. (CoD Zombies game mode) An event in July 4th occurs where (past) Richtofen, one of the characters, is visited by his future self (let’s say from December 5th) which (past) Richtofen has to give (future) Richtofen blood vials. This means that (past) Richtofen, when he makes it to December 5th, needs to travel back in time to July 4th and acquire the blood vials from his past (July 4th) self. Which would complete the “loop.”
