Valyria is Rome, with it's mighty Empire long gone. Volantis is COnstatinople, once the true sucessor and center of the world, now decadent and fading. Braavos is Venice, growing and prosperous, looking to trade where Volantis looks only to subjugate.

Technically Volantis isn't truly suffering loses from Dany's conquest of slavers Bay. Especially if they have other forms of economy that bring just as much if not more income than slavery

Well, technically now they would have a monopoly (or closer to it) in the slave trade, so they might even be richer. They probably went to war because they were afraid of what a person with the power of the ghiscary cities + 3 dragons + unsullied could do to them since she already broke slavery in one place (they are on the path to Westeros).

@@headhunterreborn IRL gunpowder first came from China, it was invented to drive out Mongolian rule of China, Then it went to middle east, later to late 14th century of Europe. In mid 15th century, the invention of rifles and new navel fleet technology navigations and Christopher Columbus discovery. A sequel should take place, a century after the apocalypse winter.

There are many noble houses in Westeros descended from Valyria who do not have the common features. The Baratheons, for one.

@@hagrid1123 Why no? The Triarchy elected each year is similar to the two consuls of Rome. The requirement of being of "the blood of Valyria" reminds me of the requirement of being a Patrician to be in the Senate in Rome. The Tigers and Elephants could be like the Optimates and the Populares. The dragonstone wall makes me think of the pomerium. The division in Western and Eastern Volantis on each side of the Rhoyne is like the Transtiberim (Trastevere). You could even say that it is similar to the division between the Patricians and the Plebe.
