Volantis is a port on the southern coast of Essos, and is the oldest and proudest of the Free Cities. A fortification known as the Black Wall protects the oldest parts of the city. The city is ruled by three triarchs, who are elected every year by free landholders of Volantis, and defended by slave soldiers called the "Tiger Cloaks". Volantis is incredibly important to the slave market, and in the city there are five slaves to every free man. All Volantene slaves have facial tattoos denoting their profession: for instance, sex slaves have tears tattooed on their faces, and the Tiger Cloaks have tiger stripes. The worship of R'hllor is the most influential religion of Volantis, especially among slaves. The TV adaptation used locations in Córdoba, Spain.

It would be so cool if the GoT spin-off follows that greyjoy explorer (I can't remember his name) or that Targaryen that flew with her dragon in Sothoryos and came back (Her name starts with a D)

Why is there a strange cut at 6:47
@ScrivaTV7 жыл бұрын
Cut sentence: "Faced with so many enemies, Volantis was defeated and its influence was since set to be to the south of the ruins of Chroyane (Sorrows)" | Technical mistake (did not triple check)

I Googled volantis it says it's a free city then how does it have slaves
@brohan9147 жыл бұрын
A "Free City" is a former Valyrian colony that was self-governed during the time of the Freehold. Other cities such as Mantarys, Tolos etc... were governed directly by the Valyrian dragonlords. Whether slavery was allowed, banned, or de jure banned was up to the city to decide.

free city but has slave? Kinda like early USA
@brohan9147 жыл бұрын
Yeah Volantis, Myr, and Lys definitely do. Pentos doesn't officially but everyone basically looks the other way. Braavos is very anti-slavery. Not sure about the others.

the shire amount of slaves in the story seems a bit overbearing to me. Yes you had examples of such lop sided societies in our world as well but they were rare and unstable (and many of those generally treated slaves better then how there treated in the story. ). It just seems like there are far to many slaves, there far to loyal as well and not to mention fill jobs like soldiers which historically was a bad idea for more then 2 generations. realistically the world should be long collapsed under its own weight.

Google antebellum South Carolina. 3 slaves for every 1 free man.
@matthewwong69187 жыл бұрын
antebellum South Carolina collapsed didnt it? Slavery on a massive scale in the United States only lasted til the 1800s. With such slavery on such a massive scale, why arent slave revolts more common?
@GullibleTarget6 жыл бұрын
@@matthewwong6918 because the practice of New World slavery in our world differs from slavery practiced in western africa which was more like indentured servitude in europe. As for slavery not being sustainable...the Roman Republic and subsequent empire thrived for centuries with slavery as an essential component of its society.
