There’s a poignant contrast between mana suppression and flower magic. Mana suppression is taught to Frieren as a magic of “revenge” and takes hundreds of years to master. Flower magic was the only non-violent spell Flamme taught Frieren on a whim. Mana suppression does not work on the demon king hence Flamme’s vengeance failed. However, flower magic connected Frieren with her party. As Frieren said, only all of them combined could beat the demon king. Flamme’s love for Frieren is what leads to an era of peace not her hatred of demons.

From what I remember Flamme did not teach the flower magic to Freiren on a whim. Flamme told Freiren what her favorite spell was, and then Freiren asked Flamme to teach her the spell.

Yeah I mean it's been discussed over and over that Serie is MUCH older than Frieren, and given how Serie prioritizes getting stronger over mana suppression like Frieren, the natural conclusion is that she's WAY godamn stronger lol

We can also see it from another point of view. In this episode we established that Freiren is better at mana suppression than Serie. As Serie pointed out, Freiren has been doing for most of her life. Taking note of that Serie's mana suppression can be assumed to be less efficient than Freiren, therefore we can still see much of Serie's mana. If Serie only suppresses her mana when she is outside her cave, that will support my observation. It also means that most of the 1st class mage only sees Serie's suppressed mana and thinks that is Serie's actual strength. In comparison, Freiren's suppression is super-efficient to the point that her mana pool looks so small, but Leren saw some fluctuations by coincidence that tells him that Freiren is suppressing her mana and made the conclusion that Freiren's mana could be as strong as Serie's suppressed mana. Here is the twist, what if Freiren's unsuppressed mana is actually much more than Serie's. Serie's inefficiency at suppressing her mana can lead to a false interpretation that Serie has more mana because it makes it look like she could not suppress it all. Think about it, Freiren has been honing her mana control continuously all her life. That is like non-stop training. Serie on the other hand is taking a leisurely stroll. I think at one-point Freiren would have surpassed Serie's level already.

​@@zam023 I think the Serie is way better at suppressing mana. Lernen saw the instability in Frieren's. But not at Serie's. And the fact she is outspoken in saying it is a useless skill to the Class 1 mages is like a test to them. And Fern passed that test. That's why she was so impressed. Contrary to how she sees Lernen who is old as hell and still not good enough to see it. She is not suppressing all of her mana because she wants the 1st class mages to notice the instability. If suppressed all of it, her "this is a useless skill' schtick has no point.

The conversation with Lernen highlights Serie>Frieren in terms of mana suppression. There will be an enemy in the future who is super strong who have their own turf, and within that turf, not even Frieren can hide her presence. Serie straight up appeared behind them without them noticing, which really shows how much control Serie has

Frieren (the show) seriously doesn’t miss. The fact that Flamme's favorite spell, taught to Frieren a thousand years ago is what inspired Himmel to find Frieren and take on his quest to defeat the Demon Lord. Serie called it a useless spell, but one could argue its the spell that defeated the Demon King.

frieren is so strong but relatively unskilled for her age, its fact. for example battle with aura, frieren said if aura continued use controls armies magic she would has lost. but aura decided to use scale magic to frieren, that was wromg choice. frieren won coz she tricked aura.

Crazy how Flamme's predicting everything. Serie's character is amazing. Yes people can see her as very condescending But her decision and intuition like frieren said is always right. She is someone who's almost equal as the gods in that world and trying to recruit some of the strongest mages i feel having that attitude is good. like with not passing frieren. Serie knows that frieren doesnt care being a first class mage. Also That Himmel flashback was chef's kiss. Im really HOPING for season 2 but theres a good chance it might not happen.

Lernen has been with Serie for 50 years and yet he can't see the fluctuations in her mana. That suggests being with someone who is suppressing their mana doesn't tune your detection at all. Fern's detection is that good because of her innate talent.

Possible, but Frieren would also have taught Fern to do the same while Serie wouldn't. Serie's restricted mana is also so massive that I doubt anyone could even think it would be possible for that to just be a fraction of her actual mana, in the same way Denken should have noticed Frieren's weakness but didn't because he didn't think a mage of Frieren's caliber could have such a weakness.

@@Palxco This is different. Fern mana control was stated by Frieren herself to be exceptional when Fern was just 8 years old. She's a natural at it. Of course, training with Frieren later on helped Fern hone those skills, but the main point is her natural talent which was enormous since she was born. This is what excites Serie so much. Enough to claim that with her help, Fern could reach heights no other mage has ever reached.

As we just saw in the 3rd exam, what exactly is she doing? Tending the flowers.. elf is such an awkward race i tell you what.

The manga chapters that will be adapted into a season 2, are without a doubt some of the greatest and most fantastic writing I’ve ever witnessed in manga. I was very lukewarm about the series as I was reading until I met that arc and finished it. I’m still in awe.

This comment is not mine but i think it summarize well what happened. "Serie is absolutely correct not to pass Frieren as a 1st Class Mage. Not because she can't compare with other 1st Class Mages because she certainly does, she surpasses them in most cases. And if she was using their abilities as her scale then no it's not fair....but that's not what she's doing. She is acknowledging that Frieren is nowhere near where she should be at this stage in her life. She spent most of her life after Flammes death as a forest hippie, tripping on mushrooms and suppressing her mana. All while doing nothing else until the heroes party found her 80yrs back. Then, and only then, did she start practicing magic. But even then it was on a limited and hidden scale so she could deceive demons. So compared to what her capabilities are she is an untapped ocean of potential that has just gone to waste. That doesn't mean that she didn't accomplish great things or that she wasn't needed by the world, it's just disappointing to know there's so much talent there that has never been tapped into. It's rather sad if you think about it from that perspective. Imagine having a kid or being the teacher of a kid whose talent was endless and having to watch them throw it all away. Yes it would be their right to do so but I don't have to be happy about it, that's their job to be happy about not living up to their potential. "

Serie digs at Frieren for being unskilled for her age for dedicating all that time suppressing her mana, but it seems Serie has done the exact same. Furthermore we've seen practically nothing of Series abilities and Serie hasn't seen Frieren in a 1000 years... there's a lot in the dark in here. Loved all Ferns expressions in this episode too

To be fair, Serie hasn't done it to the extent that Frieren has. I mean you could clearly see while she's "suppressing" her mana, she still has quite the large sum. Her suppressed mana was equal to that of Frieren's mana unleashed lol. And yeah even if Serie thinks its a useless skill, she's been alive for SUCH a long time that she probably just got bored and decided to master it over a couple hundred years

Based on Lernen not knowing, she's been doing it continuously for at least 50 years and who knows for how long. And since a thousand years is still "mere" for her, maybe ever since Flamme

@@bluestReacts So Frieren can suppress her mana a lot more than she is normally doing, to a point where she almost has nothing left. There's no reason to believe Serie could not do the same - but the extent to which you suppress it, say 10%, 15%, etc will dictate how straining it is on you or how much fluctuation you get. So it could be entirely possible that both are suppressing it to, say, 5% while they could suppress it much more but don't for practical reasons. It's just that 5% is hell of a lot different to each of them.
